so what's your system guys? to be able to check your address /phone book alphabetically, did you manually edit the contacts on the phone or used a software to do this on the pc?

You need to use the Reading field. Put the person's full name in the reading field and it will sort alphabetically based on that.

yes, of course, that's obvious.
i was talking about a software to manage contacts.
because putting the names in the reading field directly on the phone when you
have 340 contacts is a great pain in the where you know...
there's this cd-rom that goes with the phone, it's got this sync software that does sync outlook. unfortunately, the "reading" info can't be stored on outlook. it'd be really good if there was a little piece of software to manage your contacts on the computer before you transfer them to the phone.
tim?

Well... in my case where I'm using Outlook Express, reading info actually CAN be stored if you have the Japanese version of it (which I do).

Ok, now I understand. Damn Outlook... Is there any other software such as an address book, japanese version, that can be used? (I can read katakana /hiragana... if that helps)

Wow that would be a great help. Maybe we can download a JP version of Outlook Express just for managing contacts. I could deal with that, and periodically sync it with my normal Outlook.

I downloaded japanese Internet explorer pack (you can't download just outlook express alone). When I tried to install it a message popped up all with "????" on it and closed down. I guess it must be trying to say there is already a copy of IE and OE on my computer. But those, you can't get rid of, it's part of Win XP...

That's because your Windows system has its default language set to something other than Japanese. If you want to use JP IE and OE, you need to change it to Japanese.

Control Panel -> Regional & Language Options -> Advanced Tab, then change the language in the drop down box to Japanese and reset your computer.

If you're running Windows in a language other than one that uses the English alphabet (ie most of the west European languages), this will likely screw your system, so be careful when changing this setting.
