unlocked cingular 650 or unbranded version?

i was so happy this week because i thought i got a great deal on an unbranded 650 through a company selling through amazon. turns out i was sent an unlocked cingular 650. on amazon's website, it is listed as "treo 650 unlocked" and the picture is of an unbranded treo (ie, no cingular blue accents). i have been assured by amazon that if i buy it through them, i will be getting an unbranded treo.

so what is the most important difference between the two? even the company i bought it from had trouble understanding why i am returning it, because according to them, i was sent the right product. i have t-mobile and specifically wanted the unbranded version because i don't want to deal with any cingular-specific software or updating issues. what is the biggest advantage in getting the unbranded version in your opinion?

There are some instructions on this site on how to install the unbranded firmware for the 650. I followed those steps and the only way you know it was cingular is because of the branding on the fron of the device. Otherwise there is not a trace of cingular anywhere in the software. The biggest difference I see is your ability to install the latest version of the firmware which is 1.20 whereas the latest version of cingular is 1.17.

I've also done the same with an unlocked AT&T Treo 650 that I bought on eBay. since there's no logo on the AT&T Treo 650s, all you'd know is the blue color that it was an AT&T/Cingular phone.

I also have a Cingular-branded phone, that has been ROM-flashed into a PalmOne unbranded phone. There are instructions over on TreoCentral.com on how to change your unlocked-Cingular phone into one with the PalmOne unbranded ROM.

yeah, not really any difference if you don't mind putting in a little time... You can actually make yourself a custom ROM and make yourself really happy like me!! and actually, there's not really that much of a difference between an unlocked Cingular and unbranded... just the splash screen and Cingular wap settings from what I can think of...

I'm interested. where do I learn to go about doing that?

specifically removing the cingular splash screen?

any thing I would need before hand?

hey bpshirase, I don't have the links right now for the Custom ROM, but go to the forums at TreoCentral.com and do a search for Custom ROM and you'll find everything you need... I did give the links in a previous thread here though... I do however have a link to change the splashscreen though...

Good luck!!! Remember, I have no responsibility in this if you decide to try...
