After going through the Manual of a SK3...

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I'm not that excited about it anymore. The only differences seem to be the bluetooth, 1.3 megapixel camera, and the mp3 player (to which most phones have now).

:-\

oh and the look and interface of it...

Posted by: Paul_G

and edge and mini sd card and removable battery among other things

Posted by: i.Fido

We're still waiting for the Fido OTA update on the hiptop 2's.

Posted by: M|22

Agreed. The screen doesn't even have a higher resolution!

Posted by: macfreak

Web browsing speed will be what blows reviewers away.

It might. Remember what the FCC released is not a full user manual, since it doesn't even show if the SK3 will be Quad-band or Tri-band, plus what class EDGE it has.

I also can't help but feel like this device has been a wee bit over-hyped.

Yeah but it will still stink looking at web pages on that 240 x 160 screen. They should have made it at least QVGA.

Posted by: xLoveDeath

Isn't the screen the same size as the Sidekick 2?

They are talking about resolution, like the number of pixels that are displayed. Size could have been the same and most people would not have been bothered.

Posted by: furrina

I don't see how they can get away with a web browsing phone at this point without wifi.

Posted by: manchuia

none of the BBs have wifi. It's not that insane. Heck the BBs don't have expandable memory!

The phone has been overhyped, and is still a midrunner feature wise to a LOT of phones that have come out lately. BUT (and that is a big but) it will probably be one of the easiest UIs on any phone and have seamless software integration, which VERY FEW phones can compete with.

Sharp know they don't have to push technology too far because people like the ease of use of the OS more than any new fangled add on. I think that thinking is clear in that they seem to have changed NOTHING on the OS but allow background pictures, add an mp3 player piece of software, and incorporated all the hardware changes into menu options.

I think its pretty smart. About $18.00 per unit hardware upgrade, and charge $100 more than the currently available unit. Very little software changes means you don't have to pay the programmers a ton to get it right.

We might not want Wi-Fi at this point, since T-Mobile already jacked up the price, for the regular internet plan.

Yes exactly. They could have increased the resolution of the screen to QVGA. Most of the Smartphones that have been coming out lately are 320 x 240 except for the Palm Treos. If Danger would have increased the resolution in the new Sidekick from 240 x 160 to QVGA (320 x 240), the number of pixels on the screen would have doubled from 38400 to 76800. That's a huge difference when you're trying to view a web page. You won't have to scroll as much.

How can it be over hyped when tmo hasn't promoted the device yet everything has be rumors

Posted by: JordanEsh

just because it hasnt been promoted, doesnt mean people havent heard of it or about it

thats true and the sidekick 2 you can be able to design it many ways...like stickers and bumpers sidekick 3 doesnt have bumpers so its like we have the exact same phone

Posted by: InsideInfo

I understand that but if tmobile or danger doesn't tell u the sk3 will have..... Then its your fault to believe the rumors pple have said or wrote, the hype or lies came from pple's speculation, not from an tmo or danger

^^Nice. That post is true, everyone is like OHH this site is dedicated to the Sidekick 3, lets follow it and believe everything when the phone isn't even out.

Posted by: reas0n555

The sidekick doesn't need wi-fi I mean its not like we can stream video/audio... Get 3rd party apps/download files..... With a closed o.s. I think wi-fi isn't needed... Edge seems to be good enough to view sites I really don't think wi-fi speeds are needed for something that can't get 3rd party apps... 1.3 mp cam isn't bad..but with the size of the screen a 2 mp would've been better...mp3 player hey sounds like a good feature, nothing new but usefull. Bluetooth well finally. I hope people remember that the sidekicks aren't multimedia players...and they aren't as profeesional as a blackberry/treo(palm)...any wm5 pda.. But its more of a communication device.. And it gets the job done...

Posted by: DizChiNoRicHie

hey does anyone know if we can transfer ringtones to the sk3 via bluetooth?

Posted by: GoWirelessSoCal

also the price of the SK3 will be ridiculous.. The manager @ the Tmobile store that I know said that we might be looking at 399.99... that is nuts considering that the new Motorola Q is only 199.99...

/considers Q

Posted by: eimajuno

I hope they release the next skIII as prepaid as the same time as the postpaid sidekick. I am not down right now to buy a sk with a contract.

Gotta kinda agree with you on this. I can't blame the rumors or hype surrounding it, I blame myself. I blame myself for getting in the mindset that this would be the end all be all of wireless devices. After reading the manual and FCC stuff, I kinda feel let down.

Don't get me wrong, it's gonna be a helluva device for what it was intended for. I just think I built myself up to get let down.

After ditching the SK2 a month or so ago, I look back with no regrets. It was nice to have for the time I had it. But, now that I have opened my eyes (and horizons) by going with a "phone" phone, I'm not to sure I'm ready to dive into another SK.

The only 1 thing I really do miss is a full keyboard. Tapping out SMS on a number pad is for the birds after coming from a SK!

Posted by: InsideInfo

Again listening to rumors, tmobile hasn't announced anything date or cost, so wait and see, and fyi no sidekick in the past has ever been $400

Despite the roadmap putting video squarely at the end of the year / early 2007, the lack of video at launch surprises me. The sk3 certainly has to have the ability to take video from the start, so making people wait 8 months for it to be activated is anti-consumer. It's like the incremental release of the ipod nano/video.

Posted by: terryjohnson16

They might add it on the SK3 Limited Editions. I agree that is robbery. They want people to pay more for the upgraded features.

i believe they have annouced a date to their employees... not to the public...I work for a Verizon Wireless agent (kiosk) and we have a t-mobile corporate store right next to us... Both the Regional Manager and the Manager have told me July 10.

Posted by: InsideInfo

And that date can be changed, my point is nothing is concrete, so until tmo announce a date to public there is no release date

Other than a simplified OS the branding, does the SK3 have anything over the MDA?

It seems the MDA has all the features wanted initially with the SK3, video on the 1.3 MP camera and wi-fi.

Looks like the price is $300 right now, with a $50 a month unlimited internet plan. Why would you choose the SK3 over this?

Posted by: GoWirelessSoCal

$20 unlimited internet >>>>>>> $50 unlimited internet

thats y

Posted by: blyekin

pretty much hit it on the head ^^^

Posted by: thaSLABŪ

Actually, $20 is the add-on internet price for the SK. The add-on internet for the MDA is only $30...

Posted by: jetsetter

So you sacrifice all those features and basically an open OS for an extra 30 bucks a month? (if going data only)

Posted by: GoWirelessSoCal

I do a lot of AIM ... I believe the MDA Data doesnt include the unlimited text...

Posted by: terryjohnson16

You are right. You have to have a text package for the MDA and SDA.

i have to agree. So much hype yet so little change. No video is a real bummer.

however is that whole roadmap thing was true... then we should be expecting anther sidekick soon..

You only need a text plan if you use the pre-installed IM. There are tons of 3rd party IM apps that use the data connection, a few are comparable to the IMs on the SK.

Posted by: rdsaks

how close do any of the 3rd party apps come to the preloaded AIM on sidekicks. honestly thats the only reason i keep the sidekick over the mda or a blackberry

That manual that was put out, is not the full manual. Plus, we won't know the full list of spec, until they officially announce it.

I might be misinterpreting, but I think they meant that you get the unlimited data and unlimited txts for $20 as opposed to just data and hotspots for $30. The texts are a bit more useful than wifi for most users.

Its not "impessive" and pice will be a major point. I can't see t-mo pricing it higher than MDA/Q/8125 prices, even yes, but not higher

Posted by: thaSLABŪ

Yes, in general, that is the major difference between the two data plans. You either get texts or hotspots. And if you use text alot, than you would need to add a text package (I think alot of the younger users do use text alot.) I just wanted to clarify that MDA users are not limited to being charged text msgs for IM'ing.

Also, there are a few options that "trick" the system, and will allow MDA users to get the BB data plan ($20 and minus HotSpots) on their device, but I haven't looked into it personally.

I agree that the SK3 pricing would not be more than the PPCs.

There are a couple 3rd party IM apps that are comparable to the SK IMs. I would say Verichat for WM5 is the most similar in interface and functionality. Basically it can do everything that the SK IM can do, with the addition of a few more features like filesharing thru IM. However, it comes with a price ~ $25 (which may be an factor with non-business users.)

Posted by: manchuia

That was one of the things I did like about the closed OS of the sidekick.

All the programs were cheap and you didn't need to know where to find them, they were all listed there for you. No worrying about purchasing a crap program that crashed, or wasn't as good as the other program that was twice as expensive.

Flip side, you have zero ability to get a program that address a real need on your part. I had already ditched the platform before they came out with a finance tracker. I wonder if they kept the OS similar so they could release a good bit of new/updated software for the phone, or at least have it in the pipeline.

Posted by: GoWirelessSoCal

I just really hope they don't do some stupid things like put the SK3 @ 399.99 or not have it available to upgrade until a month after it is released. Or is just the store I go to that does that... are they greedy?

Sometimes its the stores, since they want new customer to get it first. I think that is stupid.

Posted by: GoWirelessSoCal

^ Agrees, it is stupid. I hate it now tho, cause its a 2 years contract.

Posted by: terryjohnson16

But, we have a choice. You can still get it with a 1 year contract whenever it comes out.

Posted by: GoWirelessSoCal

^ Yeah, but you get the best deal with a 2 year. Before you got the best deal with a 1 year.

/cries

Posted by: Carlan600i

the main problem with the sidekick was its horrible unclear screen, they made a mistake if they didnt fix tht on the sk3. lame.
