New Slvr L7 + MPT not quite working

I just got a new motorola slvr l7 today. I bought the motorola mobile phone tools and it keeps installing it as a "modem." When it gets to the phone it just stays at "initializing." Does anyone know how to fix that?
I was also wondering if there is any software like motorola mobile phonetools software out there for free. Or and free mp3 ringtone music converter that would work with my usb cable.
