So i was looking into getting a blackberry only for its PIM functions. I like the fact that they have keyboards and i have seen some for cheap on ebay so i figured it might be a better option than a PDA. I would not be using this for anything besides the PIM fuctions and maybe a few calls, but nothing else (so obviously i don't need an 8700 or anything ). What do you guys think? is a (possibly older) blackberry a good idea to use as a basic calendar/address book and what model would you suggest?

If you search hard you can find a 7290 for $125-$200 I just picked up and unlocked one for a client for $175 It's colour, dual backlit, 32mb and OS 4.1 runs fine on it. Should you ever need it as a phone it's also quad-band.

I wouldn't get a BB for use just as a PIM. Pocket PCs or Palms are much better and probably cheaper as well. If you need PIM and phone, a smartphone could be a better deal. Now if you want to add email, then the BB might be the better choice.

the problem with that is battery life, a BB's (especially the older 7200 series ones) USUALLY blows them away. But I do agree on the email part. Blackberries are made for email. Its pretty anticlimactic to get one without an email/data plan.

to actually answer your question look for an unlocked 7280 (VERY cheap) or 7290 (a bit more but a better handheld hardwarewise)

DubDub is right, don't look at BB's if you want a PIM. BB's are really email devices with some PIM capability but that is not it's strong suite.

I would tend to disagree a little. I came from a PPC to a 7290 and really use it mainly for PIM. I like the full keyboard and 1 handed use. It may be basic but its instant and has good battery

Just went from a Palm M130 and i730 to a BB 7520, which I will end up paying $.01 for after rebate. Speding more on the data plan than I wanted to but it is nice to get that email. Only drawback I see is the ringtones suck but then that is a small price to pay for it!

i was actually thinking of those two models. they are pretty cheap on ebay and i figure they must have a decent calendar (even if it is not as full featured as others). i'm a college student and i basically need a calendar for remembering appointments, tests, assignments, etc. i hate dayplanners and i cant stand typing out appointments on my t809. the blackberry just seemed like a good cheap choice rather than spending a ton on a new smartphone that would have more features than i would need.

I would also not discourage the use of a BB as a basic PIM. It can sync w/ your computer, battery life would be incredible (especially w/ the radio off) Entry is a breeze, it is instant on - and the holster keeps it right at the ready all the time.

Heck - I may have to go dust off my 7290 and charge it up....
