Blackberry and Gmail

Sorry, I'm a newbie. I admit that in advance; I tried to search for this one but didn't find anything. If I missed something, you can just point me in the right direction.

I bought my first Blackberry today, an 8700 from Cingular. I'm just a college student, I don't work for anyone. I think I'm gonna use the thing with my Gmail account. So how does this all work? Is there anywhere I can get a basic rundown of how Blackberry works, specifically with Gmail?

Will my messages by synced automatically? In other words, every e-mail message I get goes to both Gmail and my Blackberry? If I delete it from one, it's deleted from both? Can I still use the Gmail site, or do I have to view my messages through a reader like Outlook or the Mozilla one?

Thanks in advance.

How Blackberry works is that your e-mails are "pushed" to your Blackberry. Whenever you get an e-mail it will be "pushed" to your Blackberry, as for GMail, (from my experience) e-mails you receive on your Blackberry will remain in your GMail account unless you delete it. You can still use the GMail site through the web browser without problems.

Also, when you delete an e-mail on your Blackberry, you have the option to delete the e-mail on just your 8700 or delete it on both your GMail account and 8700. I use the T-Mobile BB8700, so Cingular might be slightly different. I hope this helps.

Push e-mail does not work with GMail. Only Yahoo mail. In order to set up your gmail, you can set up as POP3 in your GMail and then input your settings into your BIS. Gmail does not reconcile (ie, if you delete on BB, it deletes in GMail). There is also a filtering method that many have found to work very well. It is a little more in depth than the POP3 method however. For more information search for GMail filtering or something along those lines. also, Blackberryforums dot com is also a great resource.

Are you sure about this? I never set up my GMail accounts as POP3 and just had my BB8700 configure everything by itself. And when I delete e-mails on my GMail on my 8700, it will still remain in my GMail inbox. Maybe I'm a glitch in the system?

Well really, I have three options: I have school e-mail address, a Yahoo! Mail Plus one, and Gmail. Is one of these more Blackberry compatible than the others? If so, I can just hook the Blackberry up with that address, then have the other two forwarded to that address. FOr example, right now Yahoo! and University of Illinois mail get forwarded to Gmail, but if Yahoo! works best with a Blackberry, I can change that in a second. All I really want is a copy of every message on both my Blackberry and desktop, unless I delete the message from either. Then I want the deletion reflected in both accounts. Also, what difference would it make if I use Outlook (or Thunderbird) vs. continuing to use the Yahoo! (or Gmail or Illinois) website? Is using one or the other more sync friendly? Thanks in advance, and by the way, is there anyone at RIM or Cingular that can answer these questions for me, so I don't have to bother you all?

I... have a corporate RIM plan, and naturally, I selected "Enterprise Account" when installing the Desktop software...

Funny thing is, for the life of me, I can't find any settings on how I can POP/Push mail from a 3rd-party vendor like Yahoo! or GMail...

When installing the software, it sure seemed to imply the "Enterprise" and "3rd Party" were not mutually exclusive, and that I should be able to have both... ...but it doesn't seem to be the case.

Is there a quick howto on how to set up 3rd party mail? I am looking at the owner's manual which tells me to click on mail setup on my device (which I do not have, lol)

Hmm..

The consensus seems to be that gmail works best on a bb when you set your gmail (while in gmail) to forward, not POP, copies of your inbox to your BB address. You can also set it up so a copy of what you send from your BB lands in Gmail (need to set up another filter while in gmail not to get email sent from your phone to gmail to double back to your phone again). you can still use the gmail site. no syncing possible, so your gmail inbox will grow large if you don't manage it, with filters, or manually. I don't give my BB email address to anyone since the t-mo bb spam filter is lousy, and both gmail and yahoo have good ones.

your gmail is stored on google's server so you don't need outlook to store your email. sorta the point of gmail.

look at google more and you will see a way to look at your gmail account from your browser, which is useful for finding old, archived messages, or old forgotten email addresses, but a pain to use to send/manage your email.

Yahoo syncs to your phone if you have tmobile, but not all providers do that.

good luck

you can have all your email accounts go thru your blackberry. I have a yahoo premium account, 2 gmail accounts, a hotmail account, an aol and one other random account all pushing thru my blackberry...

Easiest (fastest too) would be to forward your GMAIL to your BB address (you@carrier.blackberry.net) and login to the BIS webpage, and change your reply to address.

That way when you get an email and reply, it will actually be recieved and sent from your BB address, but look as if it were from gmail.

On the topic of gmail I have a question
In gmails "Settings" then "Accounts" you have the option to enter addresses that you want Gmail to show there sent from, for example if I write an email rather then have it show coming from myusername@gmail.com I can have it say whatever@mydomain.com , and it leaves the user I sent the mail to unknowing I use gmail. I use this for my business, my question is with a blackberry, when I would go to compose an email would I have the option of having it come from the pre determined whatever@mydomain.com that I set up and use currently or would I only be able to have it show as sent from myusername@gmail.com
thanks !

You could do this if you configure your mydomain.com address as another email account in the Blackberry Internet Service.

Pay close attention to how Gmail handles other email accounts. Even though you're sending mail from the whatever@mydomain.com account, Gmail obeys the strict Internet mail standards (I forget which it is) and adds a Sender header to your email with your @gmail.com address. Many mail programs obey that header before the From one.

Outlook is a good example. When someone in Outlook reads an email you sent from your GMail account, the sender shows as "adam4865@gmail.com on behalf of whatever@mydomain.com".

If you want it to be foolproof, pay the $10/month for email hosting and get an actual email account for your domain.
