HTC StarTrk / Qtek 8500 / Dopod S300 Mini-Review

The first step is admitting that you have a problem. I have a problem: I’m addicted to cell phones. I can’t get enough. As soon as I hear about a new phone or accessory that is coming out, I turn into a kid the night before Christmas. Well, this was my Christmas in June present to myself

First, the summary for the folks skimming this entry:

* Style: 5/5
* Functionality: 5/5
* Performance: 4/5
* Battery Life: 3/5
* Reception: 5/5
* Email: 4/5
* Music Player: 3/5
* Overall: 5/5

Style

This phone looks like a RAZR, but improves on the RAZR’s shortcomings. A better keypad, better camera, better reception, and better operating system (Windows Mobile 5 Smartphone). Another nice feature for me is that the phone is slightly longer than a RAZR when it’s opened, and since I have a huge head, it better positions the microphone near my mouth, rather than the side of my head. Color wise, black is in. Apple has made all of their products available in black. Computers come in black. Hip cell phones come in black.

The other cool feature is the external display. It’s customizeable to have a few different styles of analog or digital clocks, but it also shows notifications of new email messages, missed calls, appointment reminders. If you press the camera button with the phone closed, the camera is fully accessible from the outer display. And the music player shows current track status, volume, running time, and paused / playing / stopped state.

Functionality

This phone has it all. It runs Windows Mobile 5 Smartphone, and that basically opens it up to all types of applications. I use the phone to synchronize my calendar and contacts. I also use the features in the Windows Mobile 5 MSFP (Microsoft Feature Pack) that adds real-time push email, similar to a blackberry. In the tests I’ve run, the email arrives on my phone within 15 seconds of arriving at the Exchange server. It also supports address checking against the server, so you don’t need to have everyone added to your local address book. The phone also has the standard collection of Windows Mobile apps like Windows Media Player, Internet Explorer, Pocket MSN, MSN Messenger, and the rest of the normal applications.

Operation while using the phone is a breeze. I was even listening to music while I received a phone call. The music paused, I received my ringtone through the wired headset (not sure if this works over Bluetooth yet), answered the call, and when I hung up, the music resumed where it had left off. This may not sound like a big deal, but it is definitely a small feature / big win piece of functionality.

Dopod included a few custom applications that I found interesting, but ended up uninstalling them to save space. They packaged a custom 3D menu, that looks cool for a demo, but ultimately is slow and doesn’t expand for new menu items. there was also a custom MP3 player, but again, Windows Media Player works fine for me.

The once feature that was very important to me when selecting the phone, but one that I haven’t had a chance to test out yet is the wireless stereo over Bluetooth (A2DP). This technology allows you to listen to music (MP3 or online streams) through Bluetooth headphones. My dream headset is the Sony Ericsson HBH-DS970 (Link ) that I already have on order, but it’s not released yet.

Performance

My last phone before this one was an I-Mate KJAM (also know as a Qtek 9100 / HTC Wizard / T-Mobile MDA / Cingular 8125 / etc…), and that ran Windows Mobile 5 Pocket PC Edition. While the operating system was richer in functionality, the phone had the exact same processor as the S300 does, the 195MHz OMAP processor. I always thought the KJAM was OK in performance, but was certainly not a speed demon. My opinion is very different with the S300. Menus are snappy, IE opens quickly, messaging opens quickly, I can have several applications open at once without much trouble. I can even switch between the camera application and IE back and forth without much lag.

The only performance issue that I’ve had is when I had IE, Messaging, File Explorer, and Media Player open. Then, I went to MIDLet manager and launched Google Maps mobile. This seemed to be too much for the phone to handle. I was eventually able to switch to the task manager and kill a few tasks, but I ended up rebooting the phone since it was sluggish after that. This could be a knock on the phone, but I think it is more likely a sign of an OS instability that will be ironed out in future ROM versions.

Battery Life

Of my short list of my disappointments with this phone, this is top of that list. Granted, i use my phone a ton. Email synchronizing all day long, contacts and calendar sync’ing too, 2 - 3 hours of talk time per day, a fair amount of web surfing from the phone, listening to music, and a few other things. Should I expect more than 1 day of battery life with this usage? I’m not sure, but I’d like to. I’ll try to keep my talk time down one day, maybe this weekend, and see if I can get more than a day of battery life. I think this might be a downfall, but at the same time, the battery life isn’t any worse than my RAZR, which I used only for talking, and still only managed about 1 day of use.

Reception

Simple answer. The reception is unbelievable. Better than my RAZR. Better than my KJAM. Better than my SMT5600. Even better than my old Nokia 6610, up until now, the phone with the best reception I’ve ever had.

Email

Real time push email is a life changer. I didn’t invent the term crack-berry, but it is very fitting. The great news is that I have instant access to my email. The trouble for my personal life is tha tI have instant acces to my email. My only complaint, and this is really just trouble with any non-QWERTY device, is that responding is a little painful. On my KJAM, I would write 15 - 20 emails a day. On this phone, that count is down to 5 or less. The T9 is great, and works surprisingly well, but it’s still hunt and peck, instead of typing.

By the way, my phone is from Asia, so it has the Extra characters. Trust me, the entire phone operates in English. Without that, I’ve be very, very lost.

Music Player

I know the form factor has been out there for a little while, but this is my first “music phone” that I’ve owned, and I must say, I’m using it much more than I ever thought I would. My iPod Nano is now sitting in my drawer. I have 1GB of music loaded onto a memory card, and when I head to the gym, I only need to bring my phone with me. One device, light weight, one I always have with me, and there’s my music. Another nice feature is that if I get bored with my MP3 collection, I just start streaming Sirius radio, something my iPod definitely can’t do.

I did notice one small issue, but this is definitely a software bug more than anything else. If you wake up the external display with the track forward or track backwards button, it doesn’t always change the track. Sometimes you need to hit the play / pause button first, and then the track skips work fine. A minor issue, but a bug none the less. Another thing that got me the first time I used the music player is that when you pause the playback, that is not the same as stopping the playback. Lesson learned when my phone was battery dead at Noon. It seems that pause still chews up a ton of battery life, and you have to hold the play / pause button for a few seconds to get the playback to stop. Of course, I’m sure I’d have known this if I actually read the manual, but I’m in software, and RTFM is an acronym for users, not for technically savvy people .

Overall

In summary, I can’t give this phone enough praise. I know it will be a big hit with the enthusiast market, and I can’t image how well this will move once Cingular / T-Mobile / (Major GSM Operator) releases the phones. It has every bit of functionality that power users have been waiting for in the form factor that the RAZR proved was possible and the most convenient. I’d recommend to anyone that they NEED to pick up this phone. For any fellow / future owners, enjoy the new toy.

Great review, and thanks-don't mean to be greedy, but do u have pics (and of the box)?

Also, where did you buy this?

Posted by: madgalaxy

Excellent review! My biggest concern has been battery life, but you have given every other feature 2 big thumbs up, I may be able to deal with the battery life!

How long did it take for your battery to die with your usage?

Posted by: machiavell1

Have you managed to get MMS working on it properly?

This is one of the concerns I have in getting one. The version I had didn't seem to send/receive MMS properly.

Thanks

Posted by: hylton

Awesome mini-review...thanks a ton for posting your experience...the battery life is definitely a little bit of an issue, and will be for most people, but given my usage, I'd say once I get this phone, I'll probably get 2 days of use, which will be less than my MPx220 and SMT5600, but still acceptable to have the additional features that I don't have now...and a better quality phone than the MPx220.

I can't wait ! ! !

Chris

Posted by: Ishimaru

with the unit you got from importGSM, what type of charger did you get? US or asian? if asian, did it come with an adapter?

Posted by: captainmicahp

I agree, that sony headset is going to be the way to go, The ear buds they make are the most comfortable out there.

Posted by: ACHI

Can you post pics of this next to the RAZR, it looks pretty slim, but is it really RAZR-thin?

Doesn't seem like it to me...

Posted by: Ishimaru

i think the razr is only a few milimeters smaller. not THAT big of a difference.

Posted by: captainmicahp

if you go to theunwired.net, they have whole series of comparison shots.

Posted by: ACHI

Nice, thanks for that link..that website is pretty cool...

Here's the comparison of the HTC 8500 vs. MPx200 vs. MPx220 vs. RAZR!

http://www.theunwired.net/?itemid=3045#article

I'm sold on this phone!!!! Please come to Cingular...PLEAASEEEEEEE!!!!

It really is RAZR like...I didn't believe until I saw it...!!! w00t!!

Posted by: hylton

The RAZR is 14mm, the StrTrk is like 16.5 or something, maybe 17.

The only real difference is the length when open, and as stated above, this is somewhat of a benefit b/c it gets the microphone more toward where your voice comes from, rather than out of the side of your face. It probably adds to the balance too...

The original press release on this phone a few months back indicated it was likely coming to Cingular. When it does, the price will be much more attractive...but I'm not sure I will be able to wait that long, there still hasn't been any 'official' word on a Cingular branded version...so it's likely to be later this year before that would happen, if at all.

I looked up the FCC info from Phonescoop and even though they link it, it's not there. So I don't think it's been approved, or if it has...maybe the info is down.

Thanks for the clarification, I knew I had seen the measurements somewhere other than QTEK's website, just couldn't remember where...QTEK specs have it at 16mm but for some reason, I thought one of the pre-production reviews had it at slightly over 16...

US Plug, no adapter required.

I connected via phone (my Dopod actually) right now, so I won't re-upload the pics, but I did post some RAZR comparison pics in this post.

http://www.howardforums.com/showpos...9&postcount=288

It is roughly the same thickness as the RAZR, a little longer when opened, and almost the same size when closed.

Nice pics, thanks UABigBird. Great looking phone, the only think I don't much care for is the silver ring around the camera.

Also, am I right to assume that no carrying case of any kind is included?

Posted by: cjasus730

thnx for the pix of the box.

Posted by: iJITSU

Isn't that a carrying case sitting in the box?

Posted by: machiavell1

UABigBird - Have you been able to get MMS messaging working on yours?

Yes, carrying case in the box, but the reason I got the phone was to slip it into my pocket.

The silver ring looks very prominent from the camera flash. Until you pointed it out, I hadn't even noticed it. The phone looks very, very slick.

Posted by: Ishimaru

uabigbird,

i notice you have a k-jam, which do you find yourself using more?

Posted by: UABigBird

Well, right now, I can't live without my new toy

In the long run, I figure I'll use both. The StarTrk works well on a day to day basis, fits nicely in my pocket, and still gives me access to my email. When I travel for weekends, I can see taking my KJAM instead of my laptop, since I've become fairly proficient with the keyboard. I can respond to emails on my StarTrk, but with my KJAM, I've replied to 20 or 30 emails a day.

Posted by: Ishimaru

that's the only thing i'm going to miss is the fact that i wont have the pull-out keyboard. but if that isn't a big of a deal, i should be ok i went and ordered the phone and will be here tuesday

Posted by: Ishimaru

UABigBird, after a soft reset, how much memory is left for program memory? cuz i'm seeing 64MB ROM/64MB RAM.

Posted by: UABigBird

Wirelessly posted (KJAM: DopodS300/Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 4.01; Windows CE; Smartphone; 240x320))

About 25 mb. The phone is plenty fast.

Posted by: Ishimaru

thanks for all the info, and i have one more question (sorry :\), what is the OS version? on BB's site it shows it's at least AKU2.2. thanks

Wirelessly posted (DarkJedi's SMT5600: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 4.01; Windows CE; PPC; 240x320) UP.Link/6.3.0.0.0)

I bought mine from ImportGSM for $599 + shipping. a bit expensive but you get it a good 2 weeks before everyone else.

What version string should I look at? The ROM versions are all 5.1.XXXXXX and I'm just too lazy to find a lookup of what versions numbers are equal to what releases.

Posted by: UABigBird

Same as DarkJedi, $599 from ImportGSM.com

Posted by: Ishimaru

the OS version should show as:

5.1.195 Build 14928.2.2.0

something similar to that. the 2.2 is AKU2.2.

Posted by: cortez

how is the call quality? how does the loudness of the 8500 compare to the K-Jam (better, worse or the same)? have callers on the other end complained to you about clarity, etc? thanks for taking time to answer my questions.

Reception and call clarity are unreal. Call volume and reception was always my one complaint about the KJAM. Since I've switched, I haven't had a complaint yet. Also, the sound on the other end has been much better. There were some issues with the KJAM mic, but not with the Star Trk.

Posted by: Ishimaru

awesome AKU 2.3 thanks for the info UA

Is there a way you can take video of the menus? (specifically speed?)
I know this is Windows...but the MPx220 for me was a bit slow...is it comparable to this...? Or is it faster than the MPx220?

Posted by: mark mackarus

The lowest on fonegrabber is now $595 shipped.

much, much faster. Honestly, I haven't noticed any speed issues whatsoever while using it.

Have you tried playing a video on it? Does it play other formats and can you install codecs/3rd party players for it?

Cool review and phone. Thanks UA.

They shipped to United States from expansys.hk?

I am in Canada and I purchased a few of them from Expansys Hong Kong because I need the Chinese version. They have no problem shipping them. For the first time buyer, they might need you to fax or email them some proof that show you are the owner of the credit card. This is the one time thing. After that, business as usual.

Posted by: Ishimaru

thats a lot cheaper than i paid for my phone, but i wonder how long it'll take to ship to the US.

If they have it instock, you should have them 2-3 days. They use FedEx International Piority. Usually the hold up well be credit card authorization since the head office is in UK and the custom. So far I am happy with their service.

Posted by: Ishimaru

quite surprising as they tell you to use mobileplanet if you are from the US.

Posted by: Ishimaru

holy freakin crap, now importGSM says they don't have any s300's in stock (even though they got a shipment today), and that i have to wait until later in the week. i might as well just buy from expansys.hk and get it shipped asap; not to mention it's cheaper. wow, just total bs if you ask me...

*edit*
i went and bought the phone from expansys.hk, and it was only $464 including shipping. better than the $635 that I paid with importGSM. i would not be as angry as i am now, if the support rep i spoke with, did not promise me that i would have the phone by tomorrow. that's just unprofessional. i straight up asked him about if i would be getting the phone or not, and he said yes, you will definitely have one shipped on monday. BS.

Jason-

Thank you for the criticism, and I'm sorry that you have had a bad experience with us. I have spoken with customer service and see that there was a miscommunication somewhere along the line. We are indeed out of stock of the Dopod S300, and were expecting stock to come in with our shipment today. That unfortunately did not take place- we are still out of stock and will not be receiving them until later in the week.

The unfortunate situation with the Dopod S300 is the unusually high demand for it coupled with a recall by the manufacturer for this phone, making it exceedingly scarce. We are working hard to keep popular phones like this regularly in stock, and always do our best to ship as quickly as possible to our customers.

Again, thank you for your input- we try to respond to our customer's comments as often as possible and I'm glad to have the chance to correspond with you regarding your experience with us.

Posted by: Ishimaru

since when has this phone been recalled? and where?

Posted by: cjasus730

And more importantly, why?

BTW, I could be wrong, but I think he means the IMate and Qtek versions....

Posted by: Ishimaru

they have been delayed, NOT recalled. searching on google reveals nothing of this sort. unless some "internal" memo. if you mean recalled as in the CEO of HTC wanted a redesign, then that happened WELL before the phone was released.

Posted by: jomo25

Just FYI - I was in Singapore on business today, and I found a couple of stores that are expecting to have the S300 in stock sometime next week in the Funan mall...

Posted by: cjasus730

No, I am referring to software issues. And yes, this would be internal.

Posted by: Ishimaru

well as i said, this is the first i've heard of it, so it "could" be internal; but i don't know what about the software that could strike a recall. cuz if there was a recall, you would have heard about it, especially with all the people who have bought the s300 already. if it is a software issue, just release a new rom, and that's it.

Posted by: Death_Dealer

I personally think this phone looks ugly, especially the camera and the keypad, lets not forget the color and the build material, I sold mine, good riddance.

Posted by: Ishimaru

way to elaborate there guy...what color did u want it???

I don't exactly what it was...but I seem to remember that it was either an A2DP problem, or an AKU2 problem. And regardiing the S300 point:
1-Dopod had already released the product commercially, and recalling a released product isn't generally good business unless the problem is of a HUGE nature (see this review of an HTC prototype where the reviewer mentions some minor nitpick issues)
2-Dopod may have released an upgrade already-we wouldnt neccessarily know.

expansys.hk still has the cheapest price around, $464 to ship to the US. beat that!

Posted by: mo98

Are you sure about that price? And will the phone have chinese characters on it? Call me stupid, but I don't want them on the phone. I want an English phone with a clean looking keypad.

Does the phone come with a warranty and if so who is handling this service?

Posted by: Ishimaru

yes i'm 100% sure of the price as that's what i bought it at. look at the phone UAbigbird has, it's the same one i bought. i'd rather have chinese characters (there's english on there as well), and pay around $200 less, then having to wait ages and pay more money for a qtek.

Posted by: mo98

Don't several places have the qtek for $499. I don't know how much is added for shipping, but it sounds like less than $100 rather than $200. What about warranties? Is your phone optimized for the US. I would rather not order something from HK if I don't have to.

Oh, and I don't want to wait ages either, but a few months is not "ages" to me. I am not that desperate for a new phone.

Posted by: Ishimaru

warranties, i don't truly care about as i've never had to warrant my phone. some places are shipping now at $599, so saving almost $200. it's still going to be almost a week if not two for smart-mobile-gadgets to get their phones shipped out (due to processing time and shipping), so the fact that expansys.hk is shipping now AND cheaper, i think it's a good deal, and i'll live with the chinese characters for the time being. plus i can always upgrade the rom to get rid of the chinese in the OS. i trust expansys as i've bought numerous things from them without any issues, AND they've always helped me if something was wrong, so i don't expect any less from their hong kong office. the ONLY thing i'm worried about is if i'm going to get shipped a US adapter for power, or an asian one??? they do sell a US adapter for $22, but i want to make sure of what i have before i buy that.

there is no US version yet; it's all the EU or CN version.

Yes, but it's physically the same phone, unlike the Dopod. Other than maybe the AC adapter. The Qtek 8500 will still carry a US warranty, albeit one that requires shipping back to Qtek (Germany) for service...

Posted by: Ishimaru

the only difference in the dopod is the fact that it has chinese characters on the keypad. but the phone ALSO has english characters as well.

*edit*
within the first few days of having the phone (granted, if there is a better rom out there), i will flash to the latest rom, THUS voiding my warranty. that's the main reason why i don't care about warranties, as i'm going to void it, so what's the point?

Most of those phones I bought are not or will never be released in North America. A lot of users like to flash the rom or customize their own rom. If the rom kill the phone, it won't be under warranty anyway. So warranty to me is not important at all.

That is definitely a good price. That's almost $100+ lower than most of the sellers that have it now.

Hber,

I am wondering, if:
A) Are you a howardforums sponser (listed on marketplace?)
B) Why does your website lists two different prices for the black vs. pink (black is listed as Imate smartflip @599, pink listed as Qtek 8500 for $499)?
C) Where are you getting your ROM's from for which phone?
c.1) Imate has their own site, of course
c.2) Qtek roms from?
c.3) Dopod Roms from?

D) You mention 2years full warranty, but from who? Your business? Qtek? Dopod?

E) What comes in the box? (data cable? battery? wall charger? car charger? carrying case? software?)

I am a very interested buyer, but the ROM's and warranty are of great concern - having had to retun my Mpx220 once to get it right.

Thanks,

S.Y.N.D.

Too bad I didn't go to TechEd this year...but the link works and doesn't seem to require any confirmation of TechEd attendance...I went thru the process and it never asked me, but I stopped short of CC authorization.

Anybody want to give this a try for under $400 shipped ? ? ?

What is TechEd? I would be willing to try if I knew what I was getting myself into. Is the phone any different?

Posted by: hylton

TechEd is just a microsoft hosted developer/IT conference, it's in NY this week...there is a link to a review over at www.htcphones.info (article on brighthand) that links directly to the phone for this price. The listing states something about TechEd attendees, but I'm not sure how they are verifying that or if they even care since you can't find it via a direct search on MobilePlanet. This link seems to be masked from a product search on their site.

Anyway...I tried calling MobilePlanet, but never got thru...

Excellent questions as QTEK support is impossible(literally) to reach by the end consumer. Another retailer that is great in the PPC forum has his distributor be the intermediate when dealing with QTEK directly. Hberbout123, can you please be more specific in terms of what is the process if we have to make a warranty claim? I would hate to have a 2 year warranty that I cannot utilize because there is noone to contact.

Posted by: Ishimaru

available upon request. hmmmm wonder if they have any instock or not...

*edit*

just called mobile planet and it turned out they don't have any in stock at all. so maybe it's "reserve this price" deal...

Im not.. check my feedbackmy feed back
B) Why does your website lists two different prices for the black vs. pink (black is listed as Imate smartflip @599, pink listed as Qtek 8500 for $499)?

SMARTFLIP IS THE IMATE VERSION 599(BLACK ONLY), THE QTEK 8500 ( PINK AND BLACK 499)
C) Where are you getting your ROM's from for which phone?
DIRECTLY FROM HTC, FOR THE QTEK 8500 ONLY
c.1) Imate has their own site, of course
YES ( thats why its more expensive)
c.2) Qtek roms from?
HTC DIRECTLY
c.3) Dopod Roms from?
IDONT CARRY THEM AS OF THIS MOMENT
D) You mention 2years full warranty, but from who? Your business? Qtek? Dopod?
QTEK ONLY

E) What comes in the box? (data cable? battery? wall charger? car
charger? carrying case? software?)

THATS I DO NT KNOW YET, BUT I WLL CHECK WITH MY SUPPLIER

I am a very interested buyer, but the ROM's and warranty are of great concern - having had to retun my Mpx220 once to get it right.

I too am very intersted in getting this phone. I am with Cingular so will all of Cingular's services work properly i.e. VM, Medianet, SMS? Will I have to hack it to make it work properly?

Posted by: Ishimaru

there's nothing to hack per se, you just need to setup everything. that's it.

Posted by: robg69

Just insert my SIM and copy the setting from my 2125 to the 8500? Could it be that simple?

Posted by: Ishimaru

well....you need to set up the internet settings (if you are going to use it of course), then set up the MMS settings. there should be a cab file with all the cingular settings; however it's for PPC and i don't know if it will work for smartphone, but i will test it and report back.

Posted by: Timback

Its very, very easy .Go to this cingular help site http://tutorials.cingular.com/tutor...criberType=cing
follow the smartphone 2125 instructions step by step, its so easy. This took me about 3 min. and the internet and mms work perfectly.
Hope this helps.

Took the plunge and ordered from expansys.hk on monday! Had no problems at all and the package just departed Anchorage with a delivery date for tomorrow.

Posted by: Ishimaru

oi vey, the only thing i hated about buying from expansys.hk is the fact that i can't call them to find out a status of my order, and both my e-mails have gone unanswered i'm at the "send us your info via fax" stage; which i did today, but my status still is the same. granted i know they just got in the office about 2 hours ago, but come on!!! i want my phone

****, why do i have the worst luck ever???? expansys is now saying they can't read the fax i sent them, and it's unclear. yet i've now sent them 5 e-mails and they STILL wont respond to me. why am i thinking i am going to regret this? but i can't be without a phone, but by the time i get this processed, it will be just in time for smart-mobile-gadgets to get them. UGH!!!

Imight have some dopod s300 comming tomorrow, keep checking my website.

What I did is scan it and email it to them.

Posted by: Ishimaru

yeah, but i don't have a scanner, i xerox'd it, and sent it. if hberbout123 can get the S300, i'll just buy from him instead. i'm just upset that they have NOT even responded to a single e-mail i've written them. they obviously speak english as that's the language the e-mails are in that they send. it's just way too frustrating!!!

*edit*

after looking at the xerox copy i made, i can perfectly make out both the expiration date, AND the cardholder name. wtf is wrong with those people?!?!?!

Posted by: Ishimaru

ok, i went and bought the S300 from hberbout123, but there was no option for next day delievery, and i don't know if he'll do free shipping still or not. i just want the damn phone the price was a bit expensive $589, and with shipping and tax, came out to almost $670

1) What are the airtime charges associated w/ push email on Cingular, if any?

2) Does this phone have an ALERT like the Motorola phones when you have missed a call or text message? That loud beep that goes off every so often, which I know some hate, but I love.

Cingular just announced support for PUSH on mobile devices...not sure if it's officially 'live' yet, but the pricing was $29.99, which also includes unlimited medianet, which is $19.99 by itself...so the cost of PUSH is pretty steep, $10/month. You can use something like mail2web for free and even the paid service w/ more capability is cheaper than $10/month.

WM devices do remind you once of a missed call, voicemail, or SMS, but only once...it doesn't 'recur' until dismissed. It's long been requested for someone to write an app that does it, or for the OS to provide this functionality, but to date, still no, at least not that I know of.

Chris

Posted by: Ishimaru

well as of right now, it uses normal internet charges, but shouldn't use more than a MB or two if used normally. however, i always send attachments, so that kicks the bandwidth up.

i HOPE they don't have an alert feature like that, it's ridiculously annoying. but since it's WM5, and since PPC's dont have the same feature, i'm going to say no on this one.

I looked up on Cingular's website because I'm not familiar with this, but the Media Works seems to only give you 5mb of data transfer? Is this correct?

If that's true, it's a horrible plan, 5mb is nothing, especially on a WM5 phone.

check out medianet unlimited, mediaworks is minimal data packaged w/ sms/mms...medianet unlimited is data only, no mms/sms included...i believe there is a new mediamax that's been discussed in the cingular forum that is basically medianet unlimited data coupled w/ sms/mms.

anyway...medianet unlimited is 19.99, unlimited data. that's what you want, particularly for a smartphone and definitely if you plan on using PUSH.

Actually, there are a couple apps that do it> offhand there is:
pocketmax.net has PhoneAlarm for WM Pocket PC, although not Smartphone.
I would imagine that someone has an app that does it.

Might work on a PPC, but to date, nobody has ever responded to any thread I've seen regarding a smartphone app that does this. There are tons of calendar, appt, alarm applications, but none that I've been able to find that tie into the system where SMS, Email, and Voicemail indicators are thrown so that it keeps beeping until you dismiss or check them.

If you know of some, definitely post 'em, there are quite a few people looking for something like this.

It's on my short-list of ideas to develop when I have time, but someone may beat me to it...haha...

Took the plunge and ordered this today from mobileplanet. $395.00, shipped UPS 2nd Day Air. The only caveat is that it won't ship until June 26th. Hell, for that price, I can wait. That will give me plenty of time to scope out what I want to install. Plus, I should be able to sell my 8125 for just about the same. Can't wait

Maniac's Automatic Keylock tool can be configured to perform an action (sound, backlight or LED indicator) on a repeating basis to remind you of missed calls or messages.

well....if expansys DOESN'T require that, then they are just damn retarded and f'd up majorly. too bad they're shipping on the 26th and i already sold my old phone...

Posted by: cjasus730

Yup-they ask for a copy of your TechEd badge to faxed to them...

Posted by: Ishimaru

HAHA, figured

Posted by: cjasus730

Would anyone happen to know someone who went that could give me a copy of his/her badge?

Posted by: Ishimaru

my friend from work went, but i'm pretty sure all the names have to match or else they wont pass it. ie the name that it's being shipped to, should match the credit card info, AND match the name on the badge.

Posted by: cjasus730

Ic. Oh well, just a thought.

Great info by all!!!

DarkJedi: sorry to hear about your bad luck. I too went through that send and receive game. I placed my order 11/06/2006 18:57:24 London UK Time and today 6/15/06 they shipped it…patiently waiting. My only worry is when I click the link to track the shipment I get this: Unable to track shipment "1Z ### ### ## #### ### #". Possibly too new in the UPS tracking system or UPS db does not speak Chinese?

More to come…

Posted by: Ishimaru

its too new to track. give it a few hours and it should show up just fine.

Posted by: mmone3

Just got my dopod s300 from expansys.hk and I'm happy to find out it doesn’t have chinese characters on the keyboard and they also shipped a US adaptor for the charger too. So far I really like it and the camera controls are greatly improved from my tmobile SDA.

If customs holds it your going to have to fax a FCC 740 form to get them to release it. Thats what I had to do!

Posted by: sopuremusic

Just got my Dopod S300 today. Everything seems to in order so far except
one thing. My connection speed is very low (about 60 kbps). It says E on the upper display, but I'm thinking It should be faster. I even deleted my cache.
My other edge phones get 160-220 kbps.
Does anybody else have this problem????

Posted by: mmone3

My S300 is about the same as my SDA, 140-170

Posted by: e1 n0rt3

Phone came in today…Yay; however, adaptor (with plug converter), manual, CD and phone in Chinese. This is going to be fun! If somebody would be so kind

This is a solid guide. It's based on WM 2003, but it's pretty good. You'll have to do your best to match up symbols, but it worked for me.

Good thing prices have been dropping. Right now, lowest on fonegrabber is $569 shipped.

http://www.expansys.com.hk/product.asp?code=136491

Posted by: Slayer

I bought my S300 2 days ago from Smartone-Vodafone in HK and love it. However, there is one big issue with it - my Bluetooth A2DP audio seems only to broadcast in MONO. Is that usual, and if so, do I need to change something in the S300's output, or do I just have a useless Bluetooth 3.5mm dongle? The page for it ((i.Tech Clip R35: http://www.itechdynamic.com/Product...product_008.asp) says the dongle receives stereo audio.

Any help would be appreciated. Otherwise my Audio-Technica ES-7s will go to waste (though arguably they are already are as I am listening to WMA-converted MP3s via a BT connection!).

Posted by: Ishimaru

if it doesn't support a2dp, it's easily fixed with the hack that's floating around at xda-developers. i get my s300 tomorrow, so i'll tell you then.

Posted by: Slayer

Cheer man, do let me know. I've looked at the hack but it seems too complicated for me to run... either that or I'm just being thick.

Posted by: jomo25

The hack was supposedly lifted from one of these units, so not sure if that would make a difference. The question is is the A2DP implementation on these Mono only? It would be very odd given it is a major feature and this is supposedly a music focused phone. But then again, nothing really surprises me anymore in the tech world.

Posted by: Slayer

I rolled up my sleeves and am currently giving it a try - post about it soon.

Preliminary observation is that the files in the A2DP hack have newer firmware versions (by 4 days!) than the default ones, so I'm going to give it a try.

EDIT: All of the Registry entries are already there. The only thing is that the files in the XDA pack are, as I said, of a different date AND size. I think I'll also try re-pairing my BT headset/stereo out.

Posted by: Slayer

Right, the audio comes through in stereo now, but the quality isn't particularly good. Severe hiss and falloff at each end of the spectrum, with what sounds like a tinkling sound at the end of each passage. It's not even acceptable for light use. I'll probably buy a wired headset with a 3.5mm jack if/when they release one.

Bear in mind that I am using Audio Technica headphones and the i.Tech R35 clip... perhaps a newer version of the audio codec will improve things?

Posted by: Ishimaru

on my old wizard, i didn't have an hiss when using the motorola ht820's. the sound quality was degraded, but not that much to make a fuss over. (not saying you're fussing)

Posted by: captainmicahp

I think it might be the Itech. I have one and the sound quality is pretty bad even on phone calls.

Posted by: Slayer

The sq really is unbearable to the extent that I tried to get it back to mono but can't as I lost the original files. I suspect the chipset in the itech may be the problem as others have had similar problems with different hardware. I'll post the links to those posts both here and in the other thread when I'm next at work. still love the s300 though - posting from it now in fact.

Posted by: Andresin

Isn't the iTech supposed to be good.I've read a couple of reviews and comparos, and from those I definitely got the impression that the iTech R35 was pretty good.

Posted by: Slayer

it is, which is why I really want it to work. the guy I bought it from told me it was probably better than the omiz and this other brand I'd never heard of that used an aaa battery. Maybe I'll take it to him and see what he thinks.

SMG should really switch to FedEx shipping...because apparently, my package started out in Illinois, then went to indiana, then down to kentucky, then back up to indiana, WTF??? how about going from illinois straight to california?!?! this is a MAJOR reason why i absolutely cannot stand UPS. they piss me off...

I thought SMG was based out of California. Why would your package be coming from Illinois?

Posted by: Ishimaru

that's what i was wondering too...

Posted by: jomo25

Hang on, maybe I'm confused. Are you saying that the S300 as originally purchased with the original A2DP implementation, in combo with the iTech R35, the audio is only coming thru one earpiece? Or is it Mono, but the same channel is sounding thru each earpiece?

yours shipped directly from the warehouse and i upgraded the shipping 3day for free.( because i know u dont have a phone)

when u ordered, the s300 out of stock.. and the next shipment was on its way to california.so i didnt want you to wait extra days and my goal to ship it fast.. thats why s300 not shipped it directly from california.

but now they are in california i have them instock 4 left..

what's wrong with UPS??? PLENTY!!! fedex is MUCH more reliable as a shipper. i'm not knocking you or your company in ANY way, i'm just saying that FedEx would be so much more beneficial than UPS would be. btw, i truly appreciate you upgrading the shipping for me you have been awesome with customer service, and i would definitely buy from you again

hberbout123,

Been gone for a while because of training... I've seen reviews on the S300, but don't remember if the review on msmobiles was on the HTC or the S300? Is there really any difference (aside from the Chinese for S300) between the two? I'm asking because I am going to order from SMG, but didnt understand the difference in price between the HTC and S300?

Thanks!

Posted by: Ishimaru

no difference besides the chinese in the S300, and the name.

Then why the price diff? Is it because Dopod is charging more for the phone?

(I know these are probably dumb questions, and I remember reading something about that earlier, but I did a brain dump when I went out for my military training).

Thx

from his previous update, his order got shipped on the 16th, and i'm guessing any day now they should arrive in cali, and be shipped from there. but of course, hear it from the horses mouth...

How come you pay $589 for a worse version than qtek 8500 at $499?
Worse in terms of some pieces in chinese.

Posted by: mmone3

no chinese on my dopod s300 keyboard.

Posted by: Ishimaru

none on mine either. plus i have it earlier than most people. i'm happy with my purchase.

Posted by: jomo25

So anyone actually have a production model Qtek 8500 yet? If so, what's the ROM version? ANd can they confirm they have the "stereo-like" MONO A2DP implementation?

I said "pieces" in chinese, don't blow a gasket, and is there any warranty on the S300?

First setting is "Language"... just change it to US English.

FYI, there is an S300 English manual available in the Singapore/Malaysia section of www.dopodasia.com.

what's the point in a warranty, if i'm just going to CID unlock it (once that's released) and flash a new rom to it?

when u unlock the cid ,i will send you the rom for the qtek 8500 i got it from HTC yesterday already

Posted by: Ishimaru

have you figured out how to CID unlock yet? i'm a little sick of this chinese font style (though it's in english, the text itself is all super thin, and i HATE it). i NEED a WWE rom.

So the phone (8500) we're getting, will it come with latest ROM or will we need to get that from you afterwards?

the warranty is for when it breaks

Posted by: Ishimaru

i'm meaning, once i CID unlock it, the warranty is dead, so there's no point...

Have owned the phone for 4+ weeks. Paid $450 USD for the first unit drop-shipped to my friend's store in Taipei. Converted region/language to English, sync'd with my Outlook, used the same Internet configs I had for the Cingualr 2125 and viola! Flawless. Got a lot of attention from friends for its sleek look and Windows fuctionality. It is a tad heavier than my old 2125 wife's RAZR but I feel it's just right.

Question on the USB/charge cable: Anyone know what kind of "standard" is this? I know this is not mini USB. Is it compatible with other phones? Where can I get replacement/duplicates?

Thanks,

Posted by: MadMonkeyBoy

look, I am not telling you how to spend your money, but I didn't think a lot of people were looking for a $500 without a warranty.
And besides, you can always reload your shipped ROM and qualify for warranty repair.

Posted by: Ishimaru

to each 'is own i guess.

Does any one know if the Qtek 8500’s have arrived at any distributors in the US yet, and are they available to ship to customers

So how long before someone creates and sells an adapter that will allow the use of any 3.5mm headphones? I.e. a "special USB-to-3.5 adapter"? Figure its gotta be coming very soon...

Posted by: Slayer

Probably a month or so before one will be widely available I reckon.

Posted by: JPR

Mobile Planet has one a adapter aviable for pre order on their site.
http://www.mobileplanet.com/product...&asource=133791

Posted by: jomo25

The one on MobilePlanet is good (for standard USB), I'd probably get one if I got the phone. But actually, I was talking about a special-usb-to-3.5 headphone converter. Probably in a month or so...

Posted by: jomo25

And not to make too big a deal, I'm sure it's just a mistake in the picture representation, but the ExtUSB-to-miniUSB plug would need a female miniUSB plug on the one end...

I got my Qtek 8500 today...WOW!
