Coverage v. Invalid SIM Question...

Okay, I sold my 7730, originally a T-Mobile Blackberry, but it's been unlocked. Also, it's 900/1800/1900mHz GSM (NO 850mHz!).

The fellow who bought it is calling me to tell me after he gets his SIM in and turns it on, it never finds the network. He hasn't outright said it, but I think he's trying to assert that it's still locked and it won't work with his Cingular SIM, and ultimately would like his money back.

I believe that if it was locked and he put his Cingular SIM in a T-Mobile phone, he'd be getting an "Invalid SIM" message and not a "Searching for Network" message. He did tell me when he goes to the call log, he can see his phone number. Again, if the phone was locked to T-Mobile, I would assume he wouldn't see his Cingular number on the call log screen. I think he's outside a 1900mHz GPRS network, it's unlocked and, it just can't find a signal.

I want to do what's right by this guy, but if he just didn't check to see if it would work in his coverage area, I believe it's his problem, not mine.

Any opinions on who's right? More information necessary? Any additional questions I should ask the fellow who bought it?

Any help would be appreciated...

Where is he? Shouldnt be too hard to figure out if Cing has 850 or 1900 in a certain area.

I figured it out... I dropped a T-Mobile SIM in a Cingular 8700c and a Cingular SIM in a T-Mobile 8700g. Both SIMs were active. Neither got as far as looking for a network. As soon as you turned the Blackberries on, you would get an "Invalid SIM" message at the top and "Unknown" under "My Number" at the top of the call log.

The Blackberry 7730 I sold the guy is unlocked, but he lives outside of Athens, GA. The Cingular 1900mHz map shows Athens on the very edge of it's coverage. I'm assuming he lives just outside that.

The bands it works on (900/1800/1900) was clearly stated in the auction and it is, in fact, unlocked. He wanted me to buy it back from him stating that I should have posted a warning that it wouldn't work if you lived outside the coverage area. Are you kidding me?, I asked. I told him I sold it to him too cheaply (I just wanted a quick sale), and he should mark it up $50.00 and pocket the difference for the trouble.
