GPS and SHARP 904!!!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hi, everybody!
Does anybody know any information about GPS navigation in SHARP 904? I mean, is it really can work outside Japan, like here in Canada or in USA, for example? Toshiba 904 has the GPS too, but as I know it works only with Vodafon Japan and accordingly only in Japan. I've heard that Vodafon customers can use GPS function in their SHARP even they are in a roaming. Does it mean that GPS function would be available for everyone not only for Vodafon Japan customers?

904T GPS WORKS in Canada. You just have to go to an open area to use the GPS since there is no AGPS from Rogers or Fido.

open area eh? like how open lol I haven't been able to use GPS on my 904t can u tell me how exactly to do it ?

Me neither, none of the GPS functions work the 904T (or 904SH) I have - they all return an error.

I ponder if one could install gps software for those small handhelds.. but it sounds like most of the phones out side the area can't triangulate. (if thats spelled right)
Does anyone know how to configure the gps or if thats even an option?

Posted by: asmok

Go into NAVI and select current position. You'll only get the coordinates from the phone since the built in software and website links are use for Japan only.

you own't get any maps. and thingsl ike that guys... if you are outside of japan. but u will get coordinates

OK. That means that GPS can works but maps are problem?! May be we can use some maps from the Microsoft or something like that. Download maps like for Pocket PC through WAP or Internet. Tim, may be it's possible to insert them into fw? I think should be some way ...

Hmm, someone like me would have to cook up a nice program in Java just for that. But it would take some updated maps with good ol Longitude and Latitudes on it.

I believe when I checked, there is Java Micro Edition support for the GPS location data in these devices, so this is absolutely programmable.

You should look for for JSR-179, which is the Location-Based API. There shouldn't be a lot to learn.

I had an idea a while ago and now the tech is here : i wonder if the 904 would be the ideal platform.

Basically the idea is a have a location service, but with your friends ( bit like a buddy/contact list). For example when you go to a festival and you re trying to co-ordinate with people where to meet etc , you can just have a little map of the venue on the phone, with the gps data + friends name overlayed.
The amount of time I have spent trying to coordinate with people at concerts/festivals, because you can't hear the phone/when an sms goes off, or there is often a delay when you send/the other person recieves the message, can be reallly annoying. Also vague messages like (near the mixing desk) is kinda useful, but no guarantee you will find the person.

Basically you can use any "medium" to transmit the gps data + the persons name/id etc. Bluetooth for closeish range, and sms maybe for long range, and wifi (obviously not in many phones, but pda's can have all 3 for example)for inbetween.

You could use java to do most of the processing - parsing the sms's automatically (proabaly require some kind of header), the sending of your data to friends phones, and the actual calculations from the lat, and long, and scaled to fit the map of the venue.

I have done a bit of java, but nothing on mobile phones, so I am not totally sure how feasable (i,e scaling the number of people, maybe mesh style, etc) this is. But with a bluetooth chat program, plus gps and a good screen already on the 904, its definately looking more possible.

Anyone had anyexperience with this - i noticed a post before where someone mentioned they are profficient with java?

Sorry about the long post: but i wasn't sure if this warranted a new thread.

Wouldn't work in Australia unless you used 3G data and a middle-man server somewhere on the WWW, because SMS costs 25c each.

Posted by: iciclejpn

yeah in aus atm its rediculous, thats why i was thinking blueetooth and wifi as the main mediums when possible.

The other thing, is the update rate: like if you can decided when to send your position its still possible with sms. Like at the end/beginning of a set, decide to send ure location so you can meet before the next band. Like at BDO i know i send at least 10-15 sms's in a day, with most of those trying to refine the position.

Posted by: Timsta

whoa.. 25 cents per sms? your best bet would be bluetooth.. but we odnt' have wifi for these phones yet.

that seems like alot of trouble to refine yoru position by sending 15 sms.. but is that normal?

Posted by: scotttttttttt

yeah, there are stupid prices in australia for everything.

and yeah, at an all-day concert people wander off lol.

Posted by: Timsta

haha.. well its an all day one.. i'd go sleep if it was ab oring group

Posted by: scotttttttttt

hahaha i'm not aware of any aboriginal groups playing at BDO. they're all mostly internationally recognised bands.

Posted by: eleu

so I don't know if the data the phone gives is way points..but if it is..it looks like
we can use a program like http://www.easygps.com/ to make a map out of it.
hrm.. wish I knew how to program for the mobile phone.

Posted by: Timsta

well mark was saying.. with the SDK. he could make a software for the 904 gps functionality

I have a 904SH in the US. I was able to use the Navi software to email positions to myself. So not much of a use. Does anyone know of a way to continuously output positions from the 904SH. I would greatly appreciate if someone could walk me through the process of outputting positions onto a map or onto the bluetooth port.

Regards,
Shree

well. foo_mark was gonna develop some software to us with it. its the only way. i think to use the gps properly for us in NA>

Posted by: yokomoto

Was foo_mark ever able to get around that?

I have a question. Does anyone know a website where we can go to where we can punch in the corridinates that we got and find our exact location.

such as if i got lost somewhere, i can use the 904sh GPS to find my corridinates and call somone at home who uses a computer with internet to pinpoint my exact location.

does anyone know of a site where we can just type in corridinates?

google earth

Posted by: yangj08

I found a Google Earth program for my 904T (http://j2memap.landspurg.net/), but is there a way to make it get coordinates from the GPS built into the phone? Maybe someone here has tried the program?

Posted by: yokomoto

Does anyone know a website where you can plug in the cooridinates that the 904sh gives you and locate your exact location onto a map?

Posted by: iciclejpn

hi this might be what you are after
http://www.mgmaps.com/index.php

but i don't know if it works with the 904/ its gps.

Posted by: yokomoto

Not exactly. Thats nothing.

I just want a website where you can plug in the cooridinates that the 904sh gives you and locate your exact location onto a map.

that was for the phone itself. but because we cant use GPS maps on 904sh, might as well plug the corridinated that the 904sh gives you onto a website and try to locate your position.

Posted by: iciclejpn

********: it streams the maps over the 3d network/internet from google... to your phone. ie if you go to the google maps homepage, you can type a lat and long in (read the help....) and it gives you maps. Its the same thing, just automated if there is a gps available......

3G, sorry typo
