Can you unbrand the SK3 to work with cingular?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

If i get a SK3(from a friend with tmobile) And everyone know's that is it locked for tmobile sims, would i need to reflash it(to nobrand) or just simply get a unlock code so it will work with cingulars network?

Posted by: negronese

cingular doesnt have a data plan like tmobile so the only thing that would work is the voice plan .. kinda dumb to use the sidekick just for the phone..

Wirelessly posted (LGE-VX9800/1.0 UP.Browser/6.2.3.2 (GUI) MMP/2.0)

yeah whats the point of a sk3 if you dont have the data plan?

Posted by: SeanZ0r

Well, why are you asking me something that you assumed by your self? GG. Cingular has unlimited net for 19.99$. I have that and for 10$ i have 1,500 text messages kthx. Well, can anyone answer my original question please? And info is greatly apreciated.

Even with an unlocked sidekick, you would not be able to use the data. The data portion of the SK uses special danger servers which cingular doesn't have. You could use the text and the phone, but not the data, NO MATTER WHAT. If TMO follows suit with what it did with the SK2, you won't be able to get the SK3 unlocked since it is against policy. SK's are the only TMO phone that can't be unlocked (recent policy change), whether software flash or unlock code (TMO won't release the unlock code). Sorry buddy, your best is to just switch to TMO, you'll get unlimited data and TEXT for 20.00 vs your 30 dollars with Cingular.

1.) sidekick 3 is not out
2.) There has never been an option to switch firmware to an unbranded firmware on any sidekick. I doubt it will start with the 3 as the OS has fer changes from 2
3.) Sidekicks rely on Danger servers for data. This data plan is NOT THE SAME as any other providers data plan as all the info passes through danger servers held by T-Mo.
4.) like mesallem said.. it's more than likely against policy to unlock the sidekick3 (as it was 2) so you won't be able to even get the first step done
5.) The sidekick 3 is not out. No one has definative information on how anything works, no one will really know for months on end.

If you want an idea of what kind of struggle you "might" be in for to get this thing unlocked and on a different network, look in the Sharp forum and read all the threads about unlocking the 904. Unlocking/unbranding a sidekick will be like that, but 15 times harder.

Whoa, thanks guys, i guess that shot down any chances of me using it on a cingulars network.

I have a solution for you. Leave Cingular and come to T-Mobile. Then you will have the SK3, whenever its released.

Posted by: SeanZ0r

Well, i don't want to do all that, i was wondering if it would work on cingulars network. My rents have cingular, so i dont think we'll switch to tmo just for the SKIII, now that i look at it, its not a very impressive phone.

Posted by: terryjohnson16

I feel the same way about Cingular.

A bad case of sour grapes, aye?

I hate when people ask can they use it with Cingular, but to get it they won't either switch to T-Mobile.

Posted by: radzer0

I have realized something lately. My prepaid kick looses all signal ALOT along with my other friends with sidekicks when there with me. So tmobile service sucks really bad as for cingular, id get away from them too. Alot less of my friends have it now because you would call and it would eather say all circuits busy (only cingular people) or it would never ring.

Posted by: terryjohnson16

My friend has Cingular in NYC, and he won't get signal until someone calls him. What the heck is that.

You guys are in the US... CDMA is the dominant technology here. Get with it.

Yea kthx. Why not just switch servers once the actual unit has been released?

Sidekicks use dedicated servers owned by t-mobile over on Danger's network (the "manufacturer"). These servers render the data to better fit the sidekick's screen, hold your phone's contacts, pictures, etc etc and host the AIM program, among many other functions. A "regular" GPRS/EDGE data plan is not sufficient to work on this particular device.

While CDMA is pretty big here its not the dominant technology. Currently GSM is by a small margain. CDMA is #1 in SK and other parts of asia (up and coming in mainland china) though with some coverage in australia, the middle east and others.

having said that, iDen sucks

Dude be very careful in calling Danger Inc. the Manufacturer of sidekicks/hiptops. They Do NOT manufacture any models ... although the very first batch (not the entire history of the production run) of the black & white screen Sidekick 1's where made by them ... they only design the Software/firmware & DESIGN in colaboration with the manufacturer ... I say WITH because the SK2's display connection to the base was implemented based on the design scheme/concept from SHARP ... (the connector goes THRU the pivot; as the last SK1 color it was part of the ring with a coaxial cable).

iDen chirping sucks!

Thank You. If you really want a Sidekick 3 with all its features that bad, then switch to TMobile. If you dont really want to switch, then DONT GET IT,or waste 400$ on a SK with out its full functions for Cingular....my god.

so what would be a good phone similar to the sidekick, (maybe with the sliding screen feature and texting/email usage) that can be unlocked and used on cibgualrs network. Can any of the verizon phones be unlocked to be used in cingulars network?

Posted by: manchuia

cingular 8125 is the same concept (keyboard coming from behind the screen) but completely different operating system, and whole host of problems. It's more than likely your best bet.

Verizon phones wont' work on Cingular and vice versa.

Verizon uses CDMA while Cingular uses GSM/UMTS.

As a recommendation for phones, search this site for something that fits the bill:

mine works fine wtf you talking about......

There are a number of threads in the Windows Mobile forum / tmobile forum / cingular forum about various issues with that phone's platform. Most (I would say 70%) are Windows Mobile related (and the pains that come along with having that OS on your phone), but in general the phone is not a great "out of the box" phone as compared to a sidekick.

Still a cool phone, might get its updated brother once released in Europe, but I thought I would at least mention the issues other users are finding with the product.

y all this need to take the phone to another provider.... and go through all that trouble ???????
