i did just this morning when driving my bro to school... scary experience! the abs went crazy and i ended up nearly hitting the curb (and i was only going 40km/h!!!)... holy crap the sideroads are slippery today!

I hit black ice two days ago. I was going around a turn and felt my back end start sliding but i went around the curve drifting my backend by taking my foot off the gas and I kept control without spinning around. Good thing I practiced in empty parking lots I found that I could keep control better if I used gas on snow as opposed to brakes. But then again we're talking about black ice, its just a matter of no sudden steering wheel jerking

a month ago.. turning left at 20 km/h!!.. and i was sliding. i was like what the?!?!.. and hit the curb.. and bet my front right rim.. sigh......

I hit some black ice on my way back home from McDonalds, it made me lose control and made my fly across the road into oncoming traffic, thank god for the constuction entrance otherwise I would of ended up in some ones ditch or front yard. All this at only 30 mph.

arghhh i just slipped on black ice on my driveway and nearly fell on my @ss! and i was only going freakin 0.5km/h!!!

Well one night when I was coming back after picking up my uncle from Pearson in very heavy traffic. It was complete stop and go traffic. I had stopped on the 409/404 exchange. Two cars ahead, I saw some guy pitch left while he moved forward and was wondering what he was doing. When it was my turn to inch forward, I took my foot of the brake. Imediate slide to the left...towards the barrier! (I was in the left lane). The steering wheel jerked to the left but I hadn't hit anything. I didn't even touch the gas and was literally going under 2 km/h yet I still slid. I couldn't believe it. Travelled about 5m before I slammed on the brakes.

Black ice is hella scary.

haha TO ppl first experiencing black ice. LOL. j/k j/k. anyway, i find it a fun experience when u're all alone and u try to stop on those surfaces. lol. i love hearing the ABS kicking in. have anyone of u experience where ur ABS doesn't kick in cuz ur car is moving so slow, gliding super smooth on the ice, and ur wheels lock up making the comp think it's stationary?

Me: at work, driving a landcruiser FJ.

Other: Driving a 30 tonne haultruck.

What happened: I was approaching the entrance into the underground mine, he was coming out. So I waited for him on a hill and stopped on this hill that was ALL black ice. I start sliding backwards, so I let out the clutch feathering it so as to not stall and the wheels (4wd locked hubs and low range engaged) are spinning slowly holding me in place. The truck starts to drift slooowly sideways... almost creeping sideways up the hill but not... The driver of the haultruck decides that he would also like to go down my hill so he starts and my side mirror catches onto his truck (he was really close) and he drags me down the hill. He notices the extra baggage and tries to stop but physics and the now 32 tonne mass (haultruck and my landcruiser) did not agree to that... the both of us are moving slowly towards a pile of large boulders...

I disengage the clutch, ram the gearshift into reverse and dump the clutch. I am now free of the haultruck... Slam the brakes and spin 180 degrees (didn't actually plan this...) which further separates me and the now 30 tonne truck... He slides into the boulders, I scramble up the hill sideways in reverse.

Damage? smoking clutch, and a stuck haultruck.

Yeah, typical day at work...

Don't always brake pump. That will increase your distance for stopping. What people teach is "threshold braking" and that is basically knowing/feeling what the limits of your brakes are before your tires lock up. However I guess brake pumping would be a contingency plan for when you cross your threshold and begin to lock up.

Haha. Threshold braking. What's next, left foot braking? Don't go pulling racing techniques into this one. Good luck trying to know what the limit of the braking is on ice. Threshold braking is already hard enough on a track. When your tires lock up you can have all the feel in the world for the breaks and it's not going to help. if you're tires slip on ice you have to regain traction, oteherwise trouble. www.turnfast.com and read up.

unfortunately.. by the time you release your brakes lock up its give you very little time.. so in snow or ice.. i brake pump even though my distance of brake increases.. atleast i know i have a better chance of stopping than just slamming the brakes and sliding or losing control...into the car infront of me.

holy crap! just slipped on black ice this morning! in my bro's school's parking lot, there was this 30foot strip of black ice, took me that full 30feet to stop! good thing i didn't hit a kid walking to school... heck i was only going less than 20km/h!

Posted by: curtis_tom

i remember killa-b told me to let go of the brakes on slick ice, cuz you can regain some traction to steer clear of anything. that is only if the ice is super slick and your ABS thinks you're stationary.
