Finally I got the info I needed by writing back and forth to none other than Motorola. First off, let me give all of you owners of the basic V3 a heads up, the manual stinks. Its incomplete, and very brief if not occasionally incorrect. They don't even list Voice Dial in the darned index. Anyway, there is a method to the madness to getting your standard V3 set up for Voice Dial. Here is the process.
First make sure the phone is set to Voice Dial = ON.
1.) Open the flip, and press the menu key.
2.) Scroll down one and right one to the Settings Icon and press Select.
3.) Scroll to Headset and press Select.
4.) Scroll to Voice Dial: OFF and press change.
5.) Scroll to ON and press Select. The phone will take you back to the headset menu, make sure Voice Dial: ON is showing.
Lets set up some Voice Names.
1.) Open the flip, and press the menu key.
2.) Scroll down to Address Book.
3.) Scroll down to the entry you want to make Voice Dial. For Example Mom Home.
4.) Press the View Key in the upper right corner.
5.) Press the menu key.
6.) Scroll down to Edit and then press Select.
7.) If the number is stored to SIM, scroll down to Store To: and press the Change key.
8.) Highlight Phone then press Select. The phome will acknowledge the change to Phone.
9.) A bigger menu will appear. If you already had this entry saved to Phone, this longer menu will appear after step 5.
10.) Scroll to Voice Name.
11.) Press the Record botton on the upper right keypad quadrant.
12.) The phone will prompt you to Press Voice Key then say name. This "Voice Key" is located on the right side of the flip, its the only button there on that side.
13.) Press and release the Voice Key. A timer bar will appear, say the name of the person clearly once. For example: Mom Home.
14.) The phone may prompt you to say the name again louder. If this happens do not press the Voice Key again, a timer bar will appear automatically, just say the name again but a little louder.
15.) If the phone does not prompt you to say the name again louder, it will prompt you to press the Voice Key then repeat name. Press and release the Voice Key on the side of the flip and say the name again.
16.) The phone will display a message Trained: Voice Name if you are successful or it will display a message that its unable to save Voice Name. If the phone is unable to save the voice name, it will take you back to the entry menu, just try again.
17.) If the Voice Name save was successful the phone will take you back to the entry menu and you will see a little PacMan like symbol next to the Voice Name: in the menu. Your done!
You can now navigate to different entries in your Address Book and assign the Voice Name.
To make a Voice Dial call using the phone, Open the flip, press the Voice Key and say the Voice Name you assigned to the person or place you want to call. The phone will play the name, and if its OK, just wait a few seconds and the call will be made. If the phone picked up on an incorrect entry, press the red Stop key on the keypad.
To make a Voice Dial call using the HS850 headset. First make sure your phone is set to Voice Dial: ON in the headset settings as outlined above.
1.) Your phone should be powered up, but you can have it in your pocket, purse or sitting nearby.
2.) Put on your BlueTooth headset.
3.) Press the activate button on the BlueTooth headset and say your Voice Name. For Example: Mom Home.
4.) The phone should repeat the Voice Name. If it is correct, wait a few seconds and the call will be made. If the phone picked up the incorrect entry, simply hit your BlueTooth headset button to end the call.
I hope this really helps some people with standard V3 RAZR phones to get their Voice Dial activated. It took me a lot of time, reading, research, and e-mailing to get a clear answer that did the trick. These are great phones once you get them set up. Its doing that, that is the hard part due to poor documentation.
Enjoy.
