Motorola v300 Help!

I recently bought a Motorola v300 (pre-paid). The problem is that it has poor signal. It only goes up to two bars in the area where I live. I am going to give this cellphone to my bf and I do not know if the signal will change. My bf has had this phone before until he lost it and the signal worked fine. I have also tried this cellphone in different areas of the city. It is strange because it works fine in the downtown area...it has all bars. Is there any way I can fix this? On the t-mobile website it says if this problem continues to call customer service, but what will they do? Thanks in advance.
