M600i Bug List

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: gsibble

I'm having a lot of issues so I figured it was time to make an official list and start keeping track.

Critical Bugs:
-Exchange activesync randomly stopping scheduled synching
-Bluetooth headset loses ability to connect; requires restart
-Ringtones (both audible and vibration) randomly stopping; requires restart

Less Important but annoying:
-Random program crashes including but not limited to "main"
-Internet (GPRS) connection failing requiring restart

Those are the bugs I have so far. I have a lot of gripes, but I want to keep this list just to bugs. What do you guys have?

Posted by: Indighost

Another bug...

I'd accidentally set up two email accounts under the same account title. When I deleted one of them, it still remained in the "Today" menu, although I could 'hide' it.

I recently deleted the second, and that one doesn't appear as an option under the 'Today' preferences menu, but the first one is still there!

hmm, I cant find any bugs in this phone yet, 1 weeks usage in 3G network.
Really solid firmware and everything works flawless

You're lucky. Mine is getting a little better but the issues with bonding with a bluetooth headset is really annoying.

what is the problem with bluetooth? iam using HBM 610 with M600 and again I havent found any problems?

As I walk around and come back to my office at work or at home, it'll reconnect to my headset for a while but eventually, it'll stop reconnecting and I can't get them to connect at all until I reboot the phone. Even turning off BT on the phone and back on doesn't work. Neither does rebooting the headset

Really frustrating.

Posted by: SupraTT

contact SE center so they could update the software on your bluetooth headset, could solve your problem

Posted by: Indighost

I don't know if this counts persay, but in the R2A manual, there's a mix-up in the handwriting recognition chart; the return slash and comma sign are swapped.

Has anyone tried using a regular USA gsm sim card on the phone? I have been using a tmobile sim card and besides having the phone crash or lock up at times I even have trouble getting it to restart most of the time. I have to take the battery out and try resetting it. Out of all the phones I had in the future I never had any as buggy or defective as this phone. Even on Esato ppl are reporting restarts, lock ups, and more about the m600i. I'm honestly thinking about trying to get a refund or sell the phone off and go back to a ppc :-\

Posted by: shaolinmonk

i've experienced....

gprs detaching

some random lockup and freexing

but everything else has generally been stable..
no bt issues at all.. using a jx-10

I've been using the phone for about 3 days on TMO USA and have the following bugs:

-MAJOR ISSUES with maintaining a 'heartbeat' connection without having to hard reset the phone. Not sure if this is related to the DataViz ActiveSync client or the phone's GPRS reception. Therefore Direct Push is sketchy at best.
-Exchange ActiveSync issues: incomplete synchronization of calendar and contacts, duplicate entries in calendar, bad Symbian request error (-6) causing constant sync failures, e-mail sync of e-mails I have already opened and read (but not deleted)
-anybody else notice there is no way to create phone profiles with different ringtones (meeting, outdoor, etc.)?
-time changes periodically even though I have set my home time zone to San Jose (Central America)

My question now is WTF Sony and DataViz were doing during the time the phone was being delayed for release? What kind of product testers could miss these very large and obvious issues? If the phone is trying to compete against a BlackBerry, which it is, at least have the decency to get basic e-mail functionality working. Better yet, put it in the hands of non-tech savvy business travelers, who require e-mail on the go (the target market), and check for seamlessness.

I really want to love this phone considering the form factor and A2DP support (I'm afraid to try streaming stero via BT) but I am readily starting to appreciate my E61 for the seamlessness of the Mail for Exchange software. The question now is how long before these software issues are corrected and will I still have the phone when they are?

As far as I understand this software predates UIQ3 and existed under another name - and it had problems then. So I dont think any amount of time would help.

So perhaps the better question is why did Sony Ericsson pick it at all?

Sometimes you wonder what is in the heads of these people. If the phone is to become a hit, you damn well better pick a software that will perform, otherwise people will blame you the phone maker not the software maker.

Posted by: maq28

I can't seem to connect using gprs .
the phone rebooted one time and freezes 1 time too.
I had the phone for 1 day .
SE update says I have the latest software . it looks like P800 again .
I hope they fix these bugs soon .

Just curious if you are using the latest firmware from SE's online update srevice???

I expect a few bugs (even though there should be none) in any new device, but SE are really doing themselves a dis-service by putting this phone in the market with so many issues. Obviuosly they knew they were sending out problematic devices as they had a software update ready as soon as they phone launched. Seems like a back-a$$ way to launch a phone.

I hope they get the their problems sorted out before the P990 hits the street (because I will buy that phone), but I have strong doubts.

Posted by: RxistKJ

BillB, I did install the latest firmware and even tried unistalling and re-installing Dataviz RoadSync again, but still having the same issues unfortunately.

The pattern I'm seeing is the connection is made to the Exchange Server, e-mail is synchronized, calendar only partially synchronizes, and contacts do not synchronize at all due to a "Symbian Error [-6] Bad Request***Sync failed!" where the connection is lost.

What I'm curious about is since the phone was officially only released outside of the US, where 3G is readily available, could it be possible adequate testing was not done over a GPRS connection by Sony and/or DataViz?

Also, I'm curious what Sync settings others are using for e-mail, calendar, and contacts? I'm having a real issue with the calendar (incomplete sync) and contacts (no sync).

Posted by: SupraTT

everything works for me and iam on 3G network.
the only time the phone crashed was when I had 16 apps running and started 1 more:P then it told me out of memory and froze for some seconds then I just jump into activity menu and closed some applications.

Have I got a super phone? no crashes under 2 weeks of hard work

I am almost to the point of selling my M600i that I've had for a little over a week. Here are my current bugs/gripes:

- Slowness on simple tasks such as opening Contacts or Messaging
- Incoming SMS show phone number only, even when I have a contact with the number
- One night the screen was completely blank and I couldn't do anything until I pulled the battery and replaced
- Sometimes the "new SMS" icon will remain after I have checked/read all new SMS
- If an email comes in while you are typing an SMS, you're screwed and everything locks up until you pull the battery out
- There is a setting for the "Power Save" where you select how long before the screen turns off... regardless of setting, it always turns off in about 20-30 seconds
- Predictive text doesn't work well when using the keyboard, its always faster to just type the word rather than scrolling through the list of possible words, pressing Enter, then pressing Space (a space after the word is not automatic)
- If you set an alarm, and the phone is on silent, the alarm will only vibrate... really poor decision for things like alarm clocks for work.
- No volume soft keys, you have to pull out the stylus anything to do anything but mute/unmute

There are just so many problems that you would think the Control Panel would have an option (or working option) for but don't. I bought the phone for $435 and for that price I should have a more user friendly UI.

i agree with a few things.. here are a few pointers..

always leave the phonebook, and message apps open in the background this will reduce the wait time dramitically. (it's a symbian thing.. s60 is the same)

the scroll wheel can incease/decrease the volume during a call.

Posted by: hkanji

I'm seeing exactly the same problems with Exchange ActiveSync.

I'm also seeing ridiculous amounts of user latency in just the user experience. Things like clicks, selections, etc take forever to register on the phone. I'm astonished SE could release something like this.

I'm also wondering if the BB Connect client will be any better. I don't know if the BB Connect app needs you to subscribe to the BB service from your carrier, or if it runs over GPRS like Dataviz's ActiveSync does.

There's got to be a better email mechanism. I want to like this phone with its form factor but so far it's abysmal.

How do you leave the apps running in the background?

- As some have said already. If you don't use ypur stylus to write, turn that off and the phone is quite a bit snappier.

- For the "Power Save" setting to work you must first put the handheld screen stting above to on and not auto.

- You can set individual volumes for alarm and calls, messages etc.

I am using my M600 with my audi bluetooth is crash when you hand up with someone, and need to restart the phone in order to pair it agian, bad bad bad.

Hi gents,

Are these bugs or am I just not getting something?!

1. Phonebook picture contacts...some show and some don't when making and/or receiving a call. Is there a uniform size, or what is going on here?

2. Voice dialling - with a Motorola BT headset and a Jabra headseat (AND when pressing the jog dial on the phone itself) I get a quick speak then No Match Found.

3. When downloading a Theme from 9mobile etc. to which folder or where on the M600 icon do you place it so it loads automatically?

So are these bugs, and do have other guys have these problems? My firmware is R1A93 (phone).

H E L P!!

Because Apple hasn't updated iSync to work with the M600i I've got my calendars going from iCal--> Entourage--> Exchange Server--> M600i. Unfortunately it is Exchange ActiveSync that lets it all down. I get Symbian Error [-1] and find that only a limited number of my calendar events have made it to the phone. I've set it to only sync the Calendar.

In contrast, sending my entire address book of 304 contacts only takes a few seconds going via Bluetooth 2.0 as vCards from Apple's Address Book software. If only iCal could do the same...

Running latest firmware.

I set up the alarm to go off for this morning at 9am, to my surprise it did not work.
I double checked this morning after I woke up, all settings are correct:
- alarm at 9am
- once
- sunday
- ringtone

Turned off the phone last night and... nothing happened this morning!!!

Anyone else has problem with the alarm?

UPDATE: according to the help menu, if you set the alarm for "once" it has to be for a time in more than 24 hours! OK so it is not a bug but I got confused and used the "once" option when I should have used "within 24 hours".

Hi All,

Recently about 3 weeks ago, I made a purchase of the new SE M600i. During the first couple days of using the phone, I found so many bugs from the software issue in the phone. Then I got an information from this forum regading updating the phone's software.

As for now I am running the latest firmware; (I hope)
Phone R3A004
Bluetooth R3A01
Organizer R3A06
CDA(?) R3A03

The phone is running much better than the original firmware the "R1". But even after the latest firmware been upgraded to "R3", I still find some bugs issues in the phone!!

For example like;

- SMS; for example when you look to access the contact list from the address-book menu, then selected the contact to write messsage as SMS. As soon as you complete writing and sent the SMS, the recent sent message window would come up again?!!?. This happens eveytime I access from the address book list, it worked normal when I access it from the message inbox menu.

- The alarm; to which I have set it only on weekdays (working days EXCLUDING Sat & Sun), but every Sunday morning the alarm still set off! and it bothers me...

- Signal bar indicator; "sometimes" when I go to places with a very low signal access (basement or carpark); the phone status would go to "Emergency Calls Only"... ok thats fine, but as soon as I go to an open space with good signal strength, the bar indicator and the status of "Emergency Call Only" would not change, unless I restarted the phone after.

So, all Im asking does anyelse who has the same M600i with or without the lastest firmware experiencing this type of problem too or I got the unlucky "defective" phone??

and any other latest firmware releases? maybe "R4"?

Thanks in advance, sorry for the long message.
EM

em996:

-Yes there is a newer firmware.

-I have not experienced problems with the M600 not finding a signal again when I come up from an underground garage or similar.

-Don't really know about the SMS and alarm issues.

latest phone R4A002
bt R3A01
organizer R3B01
CDA R3B01
this what I have I done the update on Sat.

Posted by: howdoin

Still having problem with the alarm... do I need to get a phd to make this thing work?

Set it off to ring at 7.45am on weekdays, everything seems fine so I turn the phone off and go to sleep.... to wake up at 8.00 because my alarm did not go off!!!

What's up with that? Do I need to leave the phone on to have the alarm working? This is utterly stupid, I do not want to be awoken by phone calls or emails in the middle of the night but I still need the alarm to wake up while I'm on the road.

Posted by: em996

Thanks for the feedback guys. Now, I have gotten the latest firmware "R4", I think that the phone's scroll react faster than the previous version "R3"

BUT...

I still got the SMS's bug; while creating new SMS while selecting under the address book menu.
and I still have doubt that the alarm is fix too... oh well, gotta wait to hear it on Sunday again!!!

Posted by: Roger

Let me qualify this post by saying...

for me personally,

this phone was an unmitigated disaster. I felt like a beta tester. Admittedly, I did not have the knowledgebase to set this phone up like I wanted, but, even as a phone-only device it failed.

I will not rehash the litany of complaints and bugs from this thread. I just wanted to express my disapointment with the M600i. It is the first SE phone I have had from them that I felt failed me. And I have had many of them since the T18z.

I wanted it so damn badly, and so hope it would have worked for me.

Thanks,

Roger

I've been using mine for just over a week. I updated the firmware as soon as I had charged it, to R4A002. With the exception of some problems with the Exchange Activesync software, and the fact that I don't sync mine with a PC (and Apple's iSync doesn't yet support it), mine has been 100% reliable. My P910i that it replaces was very good, but it seemed to have occasional problems where I had to repair bluetooth headsets etc. The M600i has had no such problems so far. I wonder if a lot of the reported problems are due to bugs that have been sorted in the latest firmware. Would the hardware vary I wonder?

Actually I have had opposite effect. I did an upgrade to frimware R4 and the phone is gone bad. I had most of the minor niggles mentioned but no major probs before.

Now its crashing every minute. And I follo3ed upgrade properly and left it until it told me do disconnect, so that isn't the issue.

This is my first experience of a firmware making phone worse. I was willing to accept Se taking some time to work kinks out - but not going backward.

As this point I do have to agree: with M600i they are abusing paying users as beta testers.

Posted by: Andresin

@Skagen

I don't think they made a bad firmware. I have experienced no worsening of functionality since updating to R4A about a week ago. Your problems probably lies elsewhere than with the fw version.

EDIT:
There is a bug in the music player. When playing audio files longer than, i think, 60 min the player starts counting the minutes from zero for every new ten. When you're at 74:29 it says 4:29, and what's worse if you pause the playback and then start it again it starts at the actual 4:29.

Posted by: wolwol

did anyone actually manage to browse using the opera on m600i after the firmware upgrade?
if so, how to? cause after the firmware upgrade i'm unable to go online at all.....other than MMS

Posted by: skagen

I had same problem with internet on previous firmware update before this one. it was a kernel exec crash when I attempted opening the browser, to be specific.

Turned out that the firmware had not flashed properly/fully, although I had definitely gone through proper procedure. I resolved it by doing a master reset, then reflashing. Internet worked fine since then.

So this phone is not only buggy but the updater too is a buggy piece of crap.

Posted by: txemsdoc

An insignificant but annoying problem...

1) an alarm is automatically set and shows the alarm icon on the main screen. It goes off. Even if I click on it, and turn the alarm off, the icon still remains on the main screen and the alarm still goes off. It is always set at 6:30 PM. If I change the time, turn the phone off and on, it is reset to 'on' at 6:30. I have the most recent firmware.

??????

Posted by: GT-[R]

no bugs on my phone before or after i updated other then the fact that i cant go online... at first i thought it was my internet settings that were incorrect, but it seems like more then one person is having trouble connecting online... damn...

Posted by: GT-[R]

also it changed time zones on me yesterday for some reason... but thats a minor glitch lol

You'll probably have to check for the required settings on your provider's website.

2 new bugs I've found:

--When vibrating alerts are set to vibrate only when in silent mode, after a while vibrating alerts stop and require a hard reset to work again. (for phone, e-mail, message notification)

--after using my BT HBH-DS970 headphones to listen to music for about 1/2 hour, the DataViz RoadSync (Exchange ActiveSync) push e-mail reports a sync error. Again, a hard reset is required to get ActiveSync to start working again.

Anybody else see these issues?

Are you sure there is a connection between the headset and the sync error?

Posted by: RxistKJ

I haven't come across any other time when I've had to hard reset the Dataviz RoadSync application. Also, I've been able to duplicate the issue with my HBH-DS970 headphones but have not tried to duplicate with other bluetooth devices.

It is not a bug, its a feature...its a helper for screen recognition writing. You will write numbers above, capitals aligned and small letters below.

Hi all,
If you turn off the handwriting recognition it speeds the phone up as long as you don't use it of course. I use the stylus and on screen keyboard and the word predication is very good. I highly recommend SwissManger that is a free app that helps mange memory and shut down running apps to free Ram. I also don't advise adding anything you really don't need either that does seems to be where the problems start IMO. Upgrade to the latest firmware available and forget the Symbian of old this new version requires some memory management to run smoothly IMO but can be done. I am very happy with mine and love its size and performance especially hooked up to the HBH-DS970's the sound is outstanding i also have had no problems with battery life either.

Aside from the repeated crashing, here's some bugs I've noticed which are completely driving me spare:

My phone was purchased in Hong Kong due to a shortage in the UK

1. GPRS doesn't work (O2 UK)
2. Even though I've selected English as the language, cantonese and mandarine text input options remain. If I try to use the AWFUL handwriting recognition and accidentally switch to cantonese, it overrides the UK keyboard input and UK characters won't work.
3. My time zones keep switching, as a result the alarm that's supposed to wake me up gets reset and doesn't go back to it's original time: thanks UIQ3, for making me up a 1:45pm not 6:45am.
4. 3g and MP4 video playback is rubbish; takes about 3 minutes to start playing and stutters all the time.
5. MP3 ordering by NAME not track number; no album art; seems to mess up on VBR encoded mp3.
6. Java apps have uninstalled themselves after removing M2 card and putting in again.
7. SMS often thinks that a 60 char text will take 3 messages to send; and then sends even though I say NO do not send.
8. Changing the theme doesn't always result in all elements of the theme being changed.
9. Phone stops playing music if I leave the music player without going through task manager.

None of these render the phone unusable, just make it unreliable and not worth the money I paid for it.

Posted by: Dogmann

Hi Shig2k1,
Sorry hear of your troubles but a lot of what you are saying has been fixed in the latest firmware which is R9a so would strongly advise updating. Re 4 a lot has to do with the conversion software you use and the settings i have loads of films and videos converted to 3gp with Media Studio for Nokia and all run fine. Re 5 use the Disc2Phone software and you can even encode @192Kbps which is great quality and will keep both album and track tags. Can't help on Java apps as have not added any, would also advise installing Swiss Manager that is a free program and much better than the built in task manager as IMO it is necessary to help the phone run smoothly as memory management is necessary with UIQ3. I must say i have had my phone for a few weeks now and have had no freezes crashes or any other problems to be honest. Its just not the bit of kit i expected and has been related to 2nd phone and is used mainly as Music Player as with the HBH-DS970's the sound is really good, Calendar, Photo Album and lastly phone. I am afraid even though it is much larger and heavier my N93 does everything else much better IMO.

7. SMS often thinks that a 60 char text will take 3 messages to send; and then sends even though I say NO do not send.
8. Changing the theme doesn't always result in all elements of the theme being changed.
9. Phone stops playing music if I leave the music player without going through task manager.

None of these render the phone unusable, just make it unreliable and not worth the money I paid for it.

sounds like you need a firmware update...

Thanks for your advice guys; I will see about the latest firmware and let you know how I get on with it. After playing with my phone I've had 4 friends decide to buy one, so I don't think the guys at SE are going to have a problem selling more!

maybe this has been said before I dont know, didnt have time to look through the pages but when you go to a manual network seach and search for a network if you do this two times it will restart the phone. doesnt matter if the 2cd try is 1wk later it will still reset it.

I'm running the latest firmware available from SEUS, but I have a couple of bugs:
1) When connected via USB, if I try to transfer large files (like MP3's), they'll often silently fail to complete the transfer. The transfer progress window just closes (without ever going to 100%), and I'm left with an incomplete file on my phone (or memory stick). Waiting longer doesn't help, and the file can't be deleted until I disconnect the cable. I have to do file transfers via Bluetooth to be successful; I'm hoping to find an m2 reader sometime for my computer to make things work better...
2) If the mail application can't reach gmail for whatever reason (T-Mo's internet connectivity is down, gmail is down, whatever), it assumes that my POP mailbox is empty and proceeds to delete all messages from my phone
3) Scheduling POP mail downloads is flaky. If I say to download from 8am to 1am, it won't work (i.e.-no automatic download happens). Apparently crossing midnight is a no-no, because scheduling from 8am to 11:59pm works.

Other than that, I'm happy

Hi, I have a m600i and love the phone but am having sync problems! Has anyone had the following issues and resolved it? Let me know, thanks!

I have the latest version of the PC Suite (1.2.15) and the the latest firmware

Phone CXC162037 R9EC001
Bluetooth CXC162058 R3A01
Organizer CXC162071 R5B02
CDA CDA162011/2 R5B02

I'm doing a sync direct with my outlook 2003 via usb, no sync with servers. If I do a hard reset on the phone, I can do a full sync to the end. Every time, toward the end of the calendar sync I get a "Sync Controller Module" error. The sync will run to the end without issues when the error is ignored. When I check the sync log there are no errors or filtered out appointments.

I am syncing about 2000 contacts and 4000 appointments (I limit it to 1000 days before and after).

When I try to sync again, it fails most of the time - after a few minutes, I get the error "no connection to the mobile phone". If I reboot the laptop and the phone (turn off and back on), eventually I can get it to sync again.

The pc client sw is buggy. If I start up the sync manager and leave it running and no synchronization is running, eventually, the Sync Controller Module will crash on it's own!

Any ideas?

For those of you (like me) that placed a high priority on being able to sync all of your data automatically - I suggest you hold off on buying until SE has these issues nailed down.

I'm a little disappointed - I thought SE phones were supposed to be spot on, but I feel like a beta tester with this phone - wasn't this James Bond's phone in the movie?

For now, my work around (daily / few times/week) is to restore a backup taken after hard reset (so I don't lose GPRS settings, etc), then run a full sync replacing phone items. It's a one way sync, but the best I can get to work for now....

I think the PC Suite software is abysmal... I have installed the Update software (current version) yet the PC suite insists it isn't installed. It runs fine from double clicking the icon.
Same for the Disc2Phone.

One one of my machines the update software fails to run at all, instead it throws up an error message 'check you have the latest version of the software, and retry' and refuses to do anything. It works fine on my laptop (except that I have a Hong Kong version of the phone and can't update to R9Exxx.

Overall, I love the phone, but would be better with the latest (UK) Generic firmware installed.

Yeah, PC Suite is terrible, as it can't figure out how to properly sync with Outlook (I have a couple of different versions I've tried, with the same results). And if you have a caller picture, then Outlook will duplicate the entry at least once. It's also fun that Outlook won't recognize a work or home mobile phone, but if you sync from Outlook to the phone, any mobile phone gets synced on the M600 as a work mobile, so if you sync back the other way, the phone number will disappear entirely from Outlook.

The issues aren't resolved with Activesync (Roadsync), either, which I think works even less well. I have contact syncing turned off on both. I edit my contacts in the phone, and push out to Outlook manually using an Advanced Sync in PC Suite, which seems like the most functional option.
