Why are people buying 905SH ... When it won't work in NA

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Timsta

As the title says..

why are people falling for the ebay ads, forum ads for Sharp 905SH (claiming they will be unlocked and usable) when its not even usable in North America. its a WCDMA phone.

I'm writing this post cause I've had 5-10 ppl buy these phones from guys in the BST area on this forum and other places asking when the 905SH will be unlocked.. Don't waste your money.

Enough said.

LOL, i was thinking the exact same thing. LOL

some ppl have too much money...let them spend it the way they want! lol

*bites*

Posted by: wee1031

they like to carry it on their neckstrap pretending that it works... use it just for the camera (with a jap vodafone sim card?) and set alarms on the phone so that the fone will seem like its ringing and then they can pretend somebody called them =) even if its in the subway or underground basement where theres no reception XD

Posted by: angel_wing0

they like to buy and play with paper weight

Posted by: faifai9394

well I never seen paper weight that cost that much....

Posted by: lucidzero

lol maybe they're going to move to japan >_>

Posted by: shungo

that phone is pretty good but its a Japanese only phone. Some people just wana buy something they want which they dont need haha

Posted by: Timsta

yes.. that is a point well taken but most of these buyers firmly believe it can be used in North America

Posted by: asmok

They can use it as a portable TV in NA, rite?

Well for NTSC analogue TV they should be able to, but half the functions in the 905SH can't be used outside Japan.

Digital TV = Japan only (proprietary standard)
Analogue TV = NTSC-using countries only (Japan, USA, Taiwan, etc.)
FM Radio = Japan only (unique frequency range, 76-90MHz)
FeliCa = Japan only
Network = Japan only (Voda JP 3G only because phone has no network selector)

So yeah. Not much point in owning this phone outside Japan.

At the risk of sounding snotty, why does anyone care ?
If someone wants to buy a 905 just let them buy it.
I'm sure there are people who enjoy buying gadgets knowing full well that they can not use them and if other people are tricked into buying the phones believing they will someday work, why should it bother anyone ?
I thought it was kind of funny yet interesting to see the 905 for sale here and on eBay.

exactly just let em buy it let them waste their money ..
hahah i want a 905 tim get me one cause i want to set off alarm on the bus so i look kewl and have a 905 around my neck... then i pull out my nokia 3390 from my pocket and dial....

o.O OH YEA the power of no power at all

Posted by: lucidzero

well its true that people can do what they want with their money but we're talking about people that bought it and think that it will work here... in other words just making them aware that they can't use it so they don't have to fork out money for something they think they can use

Posted by: azn_boi_128

thats true however the seller claims that its locked thats why u cant use it and it can be unlocked later for use...

Posted by: lamplighter

I can't imagine anyone paying for a high end phone and not knowing at least a little about the locking/unlocking debacle;
Also knowing as well that this particular phone can not be unlocked. it does not matter to some people as there are people who collect gadgets and particular gadgets knowing full well they can not use them.
People buy collectable automobiles intending to never drive them but get enough satisfaction out of just showing them off, playing with them, etc.. but not what they were originally intended for.
This is healthy competition pure and simple.
If someone buys the 905 and does not realise what they are getting into, so be it. I think it's good to at least have the option to buy it in the first place, no one is forcing anyone to buy it.

I think there is more to this thread than meets the eye

Hmmm... sounds like the same seller that told me that if you get a phone unlocked, it'll stop it from restarting over and over again.

It would still work on countries with the same 3G tech as Vodafone Japan right?

Posted by: john0213

i believe hk will be soon digitalize on all wireless tv so that time the 905 will be able to receive the four free channels, which some of them are, tvb, atv etc.

as for the usability of this phone, i will say it's gonna be zero unless you live in japan... i mean, i see that it should at least take some modification to the firmware before it can be use even in the same kind of 3G network.

kind of like the difference between vodafone KK and vodafone europe, you can't use a japan 903 and expect it to work even tho they are the same network...

wait, let me just be sure, did i say it right? i always thought japan and europe vodafone use the same network~ anybody willing to verify that for me?

so, the fact comes to whether unlockers are willing to forge that much time and energy into changing the firmware of the 905 just to make it work in a small market where the exact same 3G network is avalible like the japan one~

I would imagine that if anyone wants a 905sh to work in North America the only way is to build one yourself.
Hmmm now lets see, where are my hammer, nails and sparkling glue !!!!

Except the phone function, people who purchased 905SH can enjoy the great sound qulaity music player, 2 million CCD quality digitial camera, bright and clear 16:9 2.6" LCD photo slideshow and movies, play a number of demo games, alarm, phone book, view html files (maxmium 300KB).

However, the price is more expensive than 904SH.

And 904SH have better perforamnce of camera, chance to unlock and active the phone function.

P.S. If the price of 905SH is half of 904SH, I will consider to own one.

Guys... I already answered questions you just asked again! Read my post carefully please

The problem here, is that HK -wants- to digitalise but China is intent on making/setting it's own standard, but China still hasn't sorted it out.... I'm hoping they DON'T follow China.... they had/have(??) plans to use the European DVB-T afaik.

Also, yes, if unlocked, I would probably buy this phone top use in that very small niche of a market, i love 3G phones anyway so this would be a perfect addition to my collection....

Posted by: Timsta

my main issue is.. why are these buyers acting all suprised when I tell them.. hey.. it won't be unlocked.. or hey.. even if it was unlocked, you can't use it outside of japan.. and then they go into a whining stage of... but but but.. the seller said it could be unlocked and used outside... then i say... tough bananas

Posted by: faifai9394

tim, be considerate haha, becasue they have just paid for one of the most expensive lesson of their life lol

Posted by: Timsta

well.. they should really do research first. the information is readily available..

but also.. the sellers should have a better conscience.. retail stores like Simstar should be ashamed of themselves for selling 905SH publically and advertising those phones in the newspaper and magazines as if it could be unlocked.

I am so glad I wasn't the only one who felt this way...
I don't even like this phone... and my friend keeps on insisting she get it!
Telling her it has no gsm roaming if she leaves Japan doesn't seem to help either.. she just tells me she will stay in one place and won't roam around.
GRRR
I want to laugh, but it will hurt.

I always do research before buying a phone, and the number one question I ask myself is...
#1) Will it Work?
if the answer is no, I obviously don't buy it. If it's maybe.. then maybe I buy it.
Oh well...

well tell her is not a maybe, it is a no ok! no one can unlock that kind of phone because voda in jp don't even bother to write the program part for the sim.... so even though you can unlock it, there is no band/carrier selection other than the JP voda....

Posted by: azn_boi_128

*sigh* its a w-cdma fone for japan use only why would u bring a fone like that in NA and use it? do you thing its paper weight/ toy well thats pretty expensive for a toy which will never work unless u move to japan and japan only...

Posted by: Timsta

yah.. well.. its just odd taht they woudl buy it without researching..
