Is there any way to disable the data side of a Blackberry?

Here is my fear... I am going to Europe on vacation and will be using my BB as a phone with pre paid SIMs since it is unlocked. However, if the prepaid plan is GPRS enabled, my BB just might be able to reach my BES and burn through my pre paid $$ in no time... Any ideas? Basically I am asking if there is a way to put it in a "phone only" mode.

Won't happen...

you need a BlackBerry data plan to access that and a pre paid sim won't give you that.

That is what I figured initially... Then I saw some threads with people having success with GPRS only in Europe. I suppose I can try to have GPRS disabled on my prepaid account, but I would feel more comfortable with a device side solution.

If I go into Options/Network/Data Services on my 8700 there is an option for On, Off and Off When Roaming. When I was in the UK last it was when I was using the 7100 and when I had a pre paid sim card in it I didn't get any of my emails until I put my Rogers sim card back into it.

You could just do, Phone only on your profile. That would work too.

Phone only will not disable emails, but make it so you only get notified when the phone rings...

The 'Data mode OFF' option was my best hope, of course the facisits a Cingular totally disable the Network menu in the SIM.... Unless anyone know of a Motorola style hack to get the Black berry to ignore the SIM instructions.
