LG Vx8300 Ringtones and Videos, setting your own

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

For all those who purchased the LG VZ8300, I am a new owner myself, and I love it. But I was very upset to find out that Verizon locked out the features, forcing you to buy their ringtones, videos, and music at up to 5 bucks a pop.

So, for all those who have been looking for a solution, this is the simplest method I have discovered. You can use your own mp3 as ringtones, for FREE. You may have to pay for the text message, but thats alot better than using the Get it now crap and paying an arm and a leg plus airtime.....

First, you need the mp3 file of course. Second, you need some form of ringtone software or music file editing software.

Open your mp3, and edit it to approximately a 30sec portion of the song you wish to use as a ringtone. The way you do this will vary depending on the program you are using. Once you have done this, save the section you created somewhere on your pc, renaming it so not to replace the original file.

Once you do this, open your email ( I use yahoo, but it doesnt matter ), and type your wireless number @ vzwpix.com as the to address. Example
( +1234567890@vzwpix.com ). Type anything in the subject line, and the message box, it doesnt matter what, just as long as there is text there. Then attach the music file you created to the email, and send it.

You should recieve the email on your phone in a few seconds. Open the message, and using the right soft key, select options. From the options menu, select "save as ringtone".

You are done, now just go to your ringtone section under settings, and set your new ringtone.

My only word of warning is that I have yet to figure out how to delete the ringtones you have added once you no longer need them. I test several formats before concluding that mp3 format worked best, and now cant get the others off the phone. Anyone with any suggestions would be great.

If anyone needs help finding an mp3 file for a song, let me know, i have thousands. If you prefer to search yourself, Bearshare works well for free mp3 files. My only advice with that one is to be careful what you download, and to disable the shareware WhenUSave that is downloaded with bearshare. I simply used my microsoft antispyware firewall to block that specific part, and it works great.

As for adding videos to your phone, they work best when in 3gp format. I use a free 3GP converter I got from bearshare. Its called 3GP video converter for psp, cell phone, pda, ipod. When you download it, open the one that says "put me in program files", then the one that says setup. There you will have about 20 different formats, most of which do not work. The one that works perfectly, or at least has for me, is the one called (3GP2 for A5505SA). Once you have that set, then open the program, drag the video file you wish to convert onto the window, and drop it. The conversion is automatic and the saved file will be sent to wherever the program is set to save them, with me, its the desktop, where I then move the file to a 3gp video folder i created. Then you can either email it to your phone, or save it on a memory card, I use a 1gigabyte memory card and a universal card reader.

Good luck, and feel free to ask me any questions you may have. Im not an expert, just another vx8300 owner, but I will do the best I can to find the answers if I dont know offhand.

Thanks Nitehawkix999. Very helpful message.

You talk about uploading MP3's to your phone. I read on another forum that Verizon uses WMA's instead of MP3's, so how did you get your MP3's to play on your phone? Glad to hear from you that you were able to get MP3s to be your ringtones. I was hoping for this. Did you need to mod your phone to do this?

Posted by: Nitehawkix999

For the music files, I did have to convert to wma format, so that is true that mp3 music wont play on the phone in mp3 format. There is a free converter on microsoft.com just for that.

Where I used the mp3 format for music is only when I email myself a ringtone. In that way, the mp3 will play on the phone, but only when saved as a ringtone. From what I have read, the LG phone is manufactured to be able to play mp3 files, but Verizon blocks the feature so the phone is not compatible with ipods and such. Just another way of trying to force you to buy their music. Apparently what ever they used to block the mp3's from playing doesnt apply to ringtones.

As far as using mp3's for ringtones, I did not have to mod the phone. I just created the ringtone using magix ringtone maker, and emailed it to my phone in mp3 format.

By the way, i did figure out how to delete the ringtones. You just go into settings, then memory, and delete them from there.

You can use MP3s, you just have to store them in a different location and use a different applet to play them.

Verizon did it again and that trick doesn't work anymore. Now when I email an mp3 to my phone at 123etc@vzwpix.com I only get a text message saying to go to their website to see the attachment. Grrrr...

Posted by: lwr32

I hadn't heard that Verizon had changed things like that. That's just wrong what Verizon is doing to you. When I bought my Vx8300 from Verizon, I was told that I could use mp3's on it, no problem. Well, it started out being a problem until this forum showed me how to get around Verizons limitations. Now I have a 1 mb chip in my phone that I add mp3's to using my chip reader. Works almost every time. There are still a few mp3s I'd like to play on my phone that my phone says is the wrong format. I don't know what's up with that since iTunes plays all the mp3's I originally put on my 1 mg phone chip.

How can I get the default vcast video that starts everytime I turn on or off my phone off my phone without having to put another video in it's place? I'm thinking that my phone will turn on (or boot up) faster without any annoying videos playing before I can do anything with the phone.

maybe your file is too big. i just tried it and it still works

Posted by: lwr32

Any way of getting rid of the vcast advert video when you turn on or off your phone? I'd rather not have any video. Thanks for all the help with all my questions.

First thing - did you register your number @ vzwpix.com? Second thing would be checking the file size - In my experience of making tones, the files can be no bigger then 350kb's

Posted by: lec666

why would you send a pix message to yourself and pay for the message when
you can have them 100% free as a MMS message using an online uploader ?
this is 100% free for any vcast phone

128 kbps is the max for the encoding. My software sends the mp3 file actually a .mid and it works great.

i absolutely have no idea how to follow ur instructions...can please explain again?

Another option is to download bitpim software (www.bitpim.com) and buy a cable (music essentials kit) or use the bluetooth functionality of your phone and computer. Then you can not only transfer mp3 ringtones but you can also transfer pictures, music, calendar synchronization, and many other features. All free.

press "OK" button
press "0"
"service menu ??????" appears
press "0" six times
scroll down to 11. Music Setting
press "OK" button
enable MP3
press "END" key

Also change the shortcut "PLAY KEY" to "My MP3's"
Press "OK" button
press "right soft key"
go to "SETTINGS & TOOLS"
press 5. Phone Settings
press 2. Shortcut Key
press 5. Play Key
Last step is common sense.

This is old though, SEARCH the threads

THANK YOU, This worked perfectly fine for me. My brother has the 8300, its his new phone. I use the Moto Q. Just trying to figure out how to put ringtones on his phone for him. Now mp3 is enabled. Whats the easiest way? Getting a memory card? I see the slot on the side of the phone, what size card does that take? And then I wonder how to get mp3's from the computer to that card.... hmmm....

I have the LG VX8300 phone, and I had yet to use the video feature. Last night I went to a a concert and took some video.

I would ideally like to get that video onto my computer.

I am thinking that there must be another way to do that other than emailing it to myself directly from the phone for 50 cents a clip (what Verzion Charges).

I wouldn't mind so much paying that if it were higher quality video, but it is not and that is not worth it at all.

I already got the music essentials kit, so I have the data cable, but the software on that cd does not let you sync the video, it only lets you sync music with Windows Media Player 11.

Does anyone know how to get the video off my phone and onto my computer using the data cable that I already shelled out the money for?

Thanks!

you can't use a usb cable to transfer flix files longer than 15 seconds. you have to get a memory card reader, which is like 20 bucks now.

Posted by: sapasion

Far and away the simplest method for file transfer is a card reader. Take your micro out and plug into the pc via a reader them copy and paste

Posted by: jnb420

I tried it with my card reader, but only 2 out of like 9 of the video clips were there..?

They all play fine on the phone though.....

Posted by: sevenout

You have to move the video's from your phone mem. to your sd card then they will be there. Also you should set your phone to record to the card not the phone then you won't have to move them, plus it keeps your phone mem. from getting used up.

Posted by: jnb420

Thanks for the help!

I moved the other video clips from the phone to the card.

How do you set the video cam to save directly to the card as default?

I checked the vid camera settings, but I didn't see anything.

Also, does anyone know of a good software program to convert the mobile videos (.3G2/3GP) to a usable video format like avi or mpeg?

I tried Imtoo 3GP video converter, but the videos came out like crap. The audio was fine, but the video was almost like still images, and did not flow like video should.

Thanks alot!

Hey guys,

My brother has the Samsung SCH - A850 phone. I tried uploading a mp3 ringtone to his phone using the MMS uploader, as his phone is on the list of compatible phones.

His phone received the message ok, and I had him right click and "save sound", but when he goes to his ringtones, the sound is not there and he cannot find it anywhere on his phone.

When he goes back to the message and tries to "save sound" again, it says "file already exists" and asks if you want to overwrite it....

It's odd, because I uploaded ringtones the same way to my LG VX8300 Phone and my mom's Razr phone just fine.

But on his a850 phone, it saves it and it never shows up and we can't find it anywhere.

Also, on my phone and my mom's phone, you can play the ringtone right in the message you receive when you open the acutal message, and on his phone you cannot even do that. When you open the message, it then asks if you want to play it again, but it never played it to begin with....

I thought maybe his phone didn't like mp3's but his other ringtones that he downloaded through verizon/sony music box are mp3 and they work just fine.

Any ideas... anyone know what is wrong?

could it be because it is an older phone and it does not have v-cast?

I don't think that should matter, and the phone is on the compatible phone list.

If anyone has any ideas or knows what is wrong, I would appreciate the help!

Thanks!

I'm on the same page with you. If it's not a swf file then it's part of the software that's flashed and needed for booting. I'm checking now with QPST. I actually backed up and removed all the other flash wallpaper files just for some added memory.

I guess you guys weren't around for the old walmart trick. It was awesome! All you had to do was to go to their website and right click "save as" and download every sample song (30 second ready) you wanted. Then when walmart caught on, they went ahead and changed the entire format. Man that was fun. The best option we have now is to just go ahead and make your own tones.
