GPS receivers on 8125, 650, etc.

Who has bought and used the GPS recievers for these devices? I have both and am not sure yet which one i want to keep and/or use most of the time. This is something I am pretty interested in though, if anyone has any suggestions for which software is best to buy or a particular holster for the car is best than it would be greatly appreciated if you would post about it. Thanks.

Treocentral has some nice cradles for the 650 with a builtin GPS reciever + charger and suction mount. I would think that is the best way to go. Combine that with Tom Tom or Mapopolis and you should be all set for a portible solution.

I'm thinking something similar for my 650 and this looks like the way to go to have GPS + still be able to use the Bluetooth.

I hear TomTom has crappy maps - out of date and not as detailed as other solutions. I have no experience with this, but I thought I'd mention it as a point of notice. Just research it yourself to be safe.

Does anyone use GPS on the 8125?

Thanks for the heads up. Not sure what else is out there besides Tom Tom and Mapopolis.

I've been using TomTom Navigator 5 for a couple months now on my 8125 and I love it. I can't speak to the age of the maps, but it certainly was accurate enough to find me a Best Buy and Circuit City in Orlando, found me directions to a house in Spring Hill, FL and has found me several alternative routes around traffic in Atlanta...a city that seems to have new roads every day, located two restaurants on Hilton Head Island, SC and directed me quite accurately from Manchester, NH to in and around Boston. So, I guess what I am saying is that if the maps are "crappy" and "out of date" I have not yet found that in my day-to-day real-world usage.

OK where and how much did the software cost for you to get it on your 8125? Did you get a mounting holster for you car as well? If so did you get one that charges your phone while using the GPS? Im just wanting to find where to get this stuff and if i can get it in one big package.

Also with the tom tom thing, i dont think by "out-dated" they mean it has wrong routes or anything it just looks kind of old and clunky if you know what i mean. I assume it still gets the job done.

I've been using Mapopolis for over 2 years now and it is excellent. I use a Royaltek RBT-1000 bluetooth GPS, initially with my HP4700, but now with my 2125. I have a 1GB mini-SD for all my maps and music. Mapopolis is a very robust program. I planned a trip from San Diego, CA to Norfolk, VA several months ago and it worked great. Nice voice turns and updates...great one handed usability on a smartphone, very fast too.

Mapopolis costs $99 which includes all US maps. Bluetooth GPS can be had for about $115 on buygpsnow.com.

I actually *really* like the look of the maps. The display on the 8125 is not very large, so since the roads appear very wide (probably why some would call it outdated) and with the optional 3D view (which I think other programs have) and the default color scheme (which can be changed) it all makes it quite easy to follow along. The refresh/redraw rate is actually faster than my old factory Nissan Murano DVD-based system.

I bought the TomTom Navigator Bluetooth bundle from Amazon.com. I posted about it in another thread...I paid $265 for it (plus $79 for 2GB miniSD card), but the price seems to be a moving target.

As for the mount, I am using a ProClip mount...it just tilts and swivels, doesn't charge anything.

Ok great, thanks for the info guys..i appreciate it.

Can you charge your 8125 with car charger while (does it leave space to plug in your charger?) Also I assume you use some sort of BT receiver for your GPS, you have to charge that just like a headset or phone? Thanks for the info again, i dont know much about the GPS stuff yet. (obviously)

Yes, they need charged just like a headset. However, I beleive many offer the option to hook up to a cigarette lighter.

That's why I like the cradle for the 650 so much. It has the GPS and car charger built in. Just drop the phone in, hook to cigarette lighter, suction to windshield and go. Your unit is charging and ready to go when you get there.

I can't speak to other BT receivers, but the one that came with TomTom is rechargable and comes with a cigarette lighter cable to do the trick. As for the 8125, yes, the bottom of the cradle is wide open and will accomodate a charger plug...though I don't actually own one yet. Good luck!

I use iGuidance on my 8125 and love it.

Check out www.gpspassion.com. They have very active PDA navigation forums.
Also www.buyGPSnow.com has nice software and receiver bundles.

And you are basing this on....?

The King of GPS, Garmin, has a Bluetooth GPS (their GPS10) that is available either alone or with their map set, configurable for either a PPC or Palm as well as a PC. I heartily recommend their maps. I've used them for 7-8 years, including with the 8125, and have found their interfaces to be exeptional and their maps to be as good as anyone else's - after all, there are only a couple of map databases that all the GPS and map companies can get their information from.

1) Any suggestions for a Series60 phone?

2) Can the Bluetooth GPS antennas and software be used independently of each other? IOW if someone buys a TomTom antenna and software, but later decides they don't like that software, can they get a different software and still use the old antenna? (sorry if this is a stupid question)

Thanks.

There's nothing you can get for free? All I want to do is get directions and stuff. I don't travel enough to need it to follow me around. Plus I hear that some programs use the cell towers to locate you instead of a satelite. Does anybody know which programs are good and cheap/free

Posted by: cellfreak

The only "free" solution would be kMaps on the Treo 650 - it uses Google maps for directions and a map.

I would imagin you could use the web portion of the phone to go to Google maps or Mpaquest and di directions from there.

If you want good maps/directions/etc. with no GPS services, use Google Maps For Mobile...download it to your phonen for free at http://google.com/gmm .

Same, here...google maps will work in the mean time however, I would like to get a GPS unit as well. I'm debating between a real GPS device or using my 8125 /w GPS receiver.

i'm in the exact same boat...going with the 8125 would be cheaper, less stuff to carry. Dedicated means using my phone for other stuff, and then of course i'd love to have a pioneer/alpine in-dash unit but way more $.

decisions decisions.

For most uses, I think that using the 8125 with a bluetooth GPS would be as good or better than having a dedicated GPS. You can easily switch between phone functions and GPS/map functions on the 8125. About the only thing you couldn't do is watch the map AT THE SAME TIME you're dialing the phone, but, once you've entered the number and hit send, you can go back to the map as you talk. I have the Garmin GPS 10; I'm very happy with the GPS and the included mapping software. I leave the maps running on the 8125 most of the time. When I get within range of the GPS (get in my car, for instance) the 8125 and the GPS connect within a few seconds, and we're ready to go. At the present time I have a dedicated GPS on the Gold Wing, but even that may change one of these days, since I have a mobile bracket on the Wing for the 8125...
