Moto Q Certificates?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have several Treo 700w's in my office that work great with Exchange Active Sync. We have our own security certificate, ( *.cer file) that I install in the device and everything works great. Heck Blackberries will grab the certificate automatically.

If I try to install the certificate on the Moto Q it says "Security permission was insufficient to update your device." Now according to VZW Data tech support the phone just does not support adding your own certificates.

Are they correct in saying this? How is this not possible? I mean the Blackberries all do it, the Treo's have no problem. WTF?

yes, it can be done. Verizon provides a program that will install the cert to your root. I have posted instructions over at qusers.com just do a search for cert or jameskk

Thanks for the info, I did find the information from Microsoft.

James,
I went to the qusers site but when I search for cert or for your name I'm not able to find them. Can you tell me where else I might find this program?
Thanks
Russ

here's a link to the software you need to add a cert to your Q:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...&displaylang=en

download this program and move it and your cert to the root of the Q and then using the File Manager on the Q, click on the program to run it and select the .cer file you wish to import.

OK. Tried it but when I run the microsoft program it can't find the certificate even though it is in the same directory. We created this cert when we first needed to do this on the tmobile MDA and that worked fine. Does something need to be changed in regards to the cert for motorola or verizon phones?
I'll be giving motorola a call tomorrow but thought I'd ask you first.
Thanks

I've had the software do the same thing a couple of times.. try clicking on the .cer file immediately after you exit the program and it will usually install it. it's like the software unlocks the root cert or something. you might also try creating a folder and copying the .cer file and program into and running from there.

Thanks again for the reply. I did try those steps but still no luck. I called verizon and they were of little help so I called motorola. They told me that the error means that our cert was not created with a microsoft approved vendor like thwarte or verisign etc. This is true since we created the cert ourselves, but the confusing part is that this cert works fine on the tmobile mda units we use.
Anyway looks like we'll have to consider puchasing a cert. from verisign etc.
Thanks very much for the input.

well, if you like you can send me the cert and I can try and import it or tell you what's wrong with it. I am an Exchange consultant by trade.

Thanks for the offer. After doing some more research especially on qusers.com
we found that someone suggested creating a folder and naming it "storage". Put both the cert and the spaddcert file in that folder and try it. Well we did that and it worked perfectly. We had tried that but had just named the folder something like new or temp. Didn't really think it made a difference but I guess the program must look for that particular folder name. Thanks very much for your time and pointing me in the right direction.
