Is 6682 3G?

Sorry for the stupid question. Cingular says it is not, but I know it is EDGE, and isn't EDGE related to 3G?

Thanks.

...no, it does not support it.

What doesn't support what -- Cingular doesn't support the phone or the phone doesn't support 3G? (the 6681 is 3G)

the phone doesn't support 3G. :/

Please pardon my ignorance but here is what is confusing me: http://www.3gamericas.org/English/T...Center/edge.cfm says "EDGE is a true third-generation (3G) technology that delivers high-speed packet-data services such as Internet access and multimedia" and http://www.europe.nokia.com/nokia/0,,63950,00.html seems to have similar comments.

So is that statement not true?

As an end-user, what are the primary differences between EDGE and 3G and why is 3G better?

Thanks.

HSPDA (3G) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3.5G

"Theoretically, HSDPA can give throughput up to 10.8 Mbit/s."

EDGE (2.5G) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enhanc...r_GSM_Evolution
EDGE can carry data speeds up to 236.8 kbit/s for 4 timeslots (theoretical maximum is 473.6 kbit/s for 8 timeslots)

3G is a lot faster in other words.

ok, so in plain English, the statement "EDGE is a true third-generation (3G) technology" is not true?

I'm sure Cingular and T-Mobile would love it if you did believe that was the case, but no, EDGE is not really considered 3G technology. It's just a modded version of GPRS, not an actual new technology. But hey, it works well enough for me...

If you want to get down to the basics, I think there are some requirements for 3G. EDGE can do 128 kbps in a car, and has the ability to do 384 kbps (using up to 8 timeslots, however no 8 timeslot devices exist). Current devices are physically limited to 236 kbps with class 10. UMTS starts at 384kbps. UMTS/HSDPA is good for 1.8Mbps on a limited handset. 3.6/7.2 Mbps devices exist.

Quote:
3G is an ITU specification for the third generation (analog cellular was the first generation, digital PCS the second) of mobile communications technology. 3G promises increased bandwidth, up to 384 Kbps when a device is stationary or moving at pedestrian speed, 128 Kbps in a car, and 2 Mbps in fixed applications. 3G will work over wireless air interfaces such as GSM, TDMA, and CDMA. The new EDGE air interface has been developed specifically to meet the bandwidth needs of 3G

So then the 3G website lies and Cingular was correct in what they told me...wow...I would have figured it to be the other way around.

^^I thought this was plain english? LOL man what kind of explanation are you wanting simple or detailed?

Posted by: struff

Yes, that IS plain English. But like I said in my last post, I was surprised that the so-called "official" 3G website says something that is not true and that Cingular CS was correct in what they told me (especially considering how many stories we always hear about CSR's who don't know what they're talking about).

I don't know about that...I was on a cruise ship in the Atlantic once and it sure looked like I was near the edge.
