Bluetooth and cars

I just got cussed out by a rich jerk because I didn't know how to pair his bluetooth phone to his lexus. I've had a few people ask about this and we always send them back to their car dealership.

I've gone into the parking lot and worked with these cars before and I've never had much luck, the instructions are terrible. Also every brand of car has their own way of going about pairing the two and no two ever seem to work the same.

Has anyone been successful with these?

Nope, never tried...we don't sell cars. All the people who Ive had with BT cars have never gotten upset with me, must be that midwestern nice person syndrome.

only one i've ever had the car dealer told the girl her car was bluetooth, after trying everything come to find out the dealer lied and sold her a model that was not bluetooth equipped.

I have done the pairing on the Lexus LS430 and Infiniti M45 and they have been pretty easy.

A quick search at the Lexus website brings up a guide to use: It is even phone specfic

OMG, did we deal with the same person? While he was nice while I was speaking with him he was having problems getting his 2 Lexus's bluetooths to pair with his 2 treo 650..........was he sent to your store by a Care rep by any chance?

Any device besides Motorola handsets seem to do an awful job of connecting with any cars. That includes treo who does an awful job of doing anything BT. When I say awful I mean they dont work at all.

I've done it on a Acura TL, Toyota Camry (2007) and Prius....never had problems...

Hell the car tells you how to do it via voice prompts.

I've never failed to pair a phone with a car via bluetooth as long as the car has some sort of visual display. Generally speaking, you put the car in discoverable mode (follow on screen prompts or read the manual) and have the phone find the carkit.

Some earlier cars may have bluetooth but require a dealership to pair since the process is not available without special equipment.

Always read the manual if you have any probs. The instructions are in there, promise. Unless, of course, the pair cannot be done without a dealership.

I've done a Lexus successfully with a V551. Just followed the booklet included with the car. Pretty simple. I tried some guy's carkit with a Treo with zero success. I wasn't surprised.. I'm a fan of the Treo, but its bluetooth performance is awful.

Appreciate the link and all, but now I'm a little concerned. A few of the phones on there are definately not bluetooth and I'm not pulling up any actual directions on how to pair them.

If I'm just failing to see the obvious just say so (it happens a lot).

tell em to go back to the dealership, we don't sell cars, nor do we trouble shoot bluetooth headsets. not to my knowledge atleast.

wtf? out job is to help the customer. I have setup 6 bluetooth cars here recently, with no issue. Jeep Grand Cherokees seamlessly sync with z520's. and the voice recognition is flawless on it. UConnect is absolutely wonderful.
And the BMWs that i have done, i wasnt too happy with. Their voice recognition is very cruddy.

wow now that is customer service, personally myself being a car guy i like going out and sitting a $50,000 luxury car and thinking of what i will have one day. plus it is nice to step outside the store every now and then.

Its hard to pair them up over the phone, but I try to work them thru it. I think Ive successfully done it twice. Luckily enough no one has gotten mad at me (maybe its because Im a girl) but if I have no clue what to do next after Ive done what it is I can do, I refer them to their car manufacturer's CS or their BT manufacturer.

I've climbed into a couple and tried it out, so have my co-workers. THe BMW was impossible. I'm not saying that I'm a genius but I can usually figure this kind of thing out.

And that new link is MUCH better, thanks Perceptions.

People yell at me all the time because I can't help them pair the two over the phone. I even had one guy escalate to 3 different supervisors (he kept cussing them out and asking for another one) because he insisted Cingular should reimburse him thirty-some thousand dollars because he bought his car just so he could pair it with his phone and it wasn't working...

That most certainly sound slike a personal problem to me!

Right there with you, had a guy with 2 Lexuses (is that the plural for lexus?) and the bluetooths stopped pairing on both. I'll admit my first response is you need to check with the car and/or bt manufacturer but he insisted I needed to fix it right there over the phone....ok back to the drawing board.......looked up a little bit of info (Lexus site is blocked by our proxy btw) and he kept saying I tried that...finally I asked him where did he purchase his treos...he said a store in Aura. So I called the store and spoke with a very nice sales rep there who even join me on the line with the customer. He asked the customer to come in with at least one of the cars and he would personally assist him. I wanted to hug the guy. While I believe it is my duty to help in whatever way I can, there are just some things that are downright impossiable over the phone.

its not hard. i learned how to do it myself. usually i tell em i'll try and see how it goes.

i find the newer bmws to be a pain, but thats it.

amen, right? my thoughts exactly... it makes me wonder, why we arent the ones pushing cars like that... we have the knowledge...

Posted by: PulsarFire

I'm on the fence about it. I understand customer service and go out of my way with everyone that I work with. A big part of my problem with some of these people is the attitude; that "richer than thou" smirk gets really old.

I thought about meeting up with a BMW dealer (or lexus, etc.) and having them show me how to do it. Then maybe build a relationship with them and try to get a CBE worked out with them or at the very least get them to refer customers to me.

As the Director of the team that got handed the problem with BT pairing and performance with Lexus (and other) vehicles under the "Customer Rules" program, I can tell you that we're working to improve our testing programs to cover more BT devices. For the Lexus cars specifically, the Denso Navigation/BT module kit that was put in the 2005 and 2006 RX, LX, GS, etc. models, we verified that Denso had several interoperability problems that were corrected in a new kit version. However, the kits are not upgradeable or replaceable (thank you Denso and Lexus), and are just now starting to come out in the late 2006 model year intros (like the IS series), and will be in all the 2007 models offering the option.

We noticed that Samsung 3G phones had problems linking with this kit, an issue that has now been fixed. I didn't have any Samsung 2G phones with me at the time.

Everyone, please stay with this. BT pairing with Lexus, Acura, BMW and other cars IS possible and should work most of the time. If you have problems, escalate it through Care so that we can try to address it.

iDrive(bmw)+ bluetooth= HELL.

the guy was a customer of mine and we talked and all. good guy, too bad the idrive wouldnt be nice to me. I spent 1 hr tryin to do it then he said he'd take it to bmw.

i so wanted to take his 550i out for a spin LOL

Speaking from a customer's point of view, I wouldn't expect a Cingular rep to help me pair with a new car.

However, if i walked in and told them what type of car I had and that I wanted a phone that would work with my car, I would expect them to either tell me they had BT phones but couldn't guarentee it would work, OR i would expect the rep selling me the phone to help me ensure it did work.

I would really only have a problem if the rep told me it would work fine just to sell me the phone and never bothered to try to help me when it didn't. But no -- reps shouldn't have to debug car systems.
