(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: illrunuover

hey i was looking at the phonescoop forums for this phone and noticed that some guy posted a update for the phone , can anyone comfirm this?

Posted by: jyoung1685

It's on Utstarcom's website, but the folks over in the verizon forum is saying it's corrupt.

Posted by: illrunuover

yup that sucks i cant wait till the upate

Posted by: illrunuover

i just updated my phone ...seems faster now with a few more feautes like an upgraded comm for bt wifi and phone along with other things

Posted by: alex13182

It's on Verizon website click on Support link. No problems downloading and it's not corrupt. UTStarcom site is overloaded and useless at this time.

Posted by: JeSTeR7

I downloaded it from the Verizon website and it worked flawlessly. The only two changes I've noticed right away are the voice dialing and a new comm manager. Does anybody know of a list that shows what was improved in the upgrade?

Some reports that it may disable BT DUN.

Please excuse my ignorance, I just got my phone Monday

If I do this upgrade do I have to use all of the Verizon software or do I still get to have the phone "Verizon free"? I'm referring to the hard reset and bypassing the installation of the Verizonware.

thanks in advance!
Gary

You can still do the softreset before the phone "customizes" itself
I did the update this morning and am plesantly suprised at the fixes and additions.

I have had my 6700 for a few months now and have not used voice dialing yet. Do you need a special program, or is the device capable of doing this out of the box? Also, can you voice dial with a BT headset?

Thanks!
Cass

Posted by: lawman0210

OK. I have been using the new Rom update for 2 days and so far I love it. I was ready to return my 6700 until this update. (1) lock program works great. It keeps you from dialing accidently when in your pocket. (2) Voice dial works farly well with bluetooth allowing you to set up voice and program tags. (3) Adds a new comm management program allowing you to easily turn on and off data, bluetooth, wifi, and ringer to vibrate. With out any mods it allows you to use wifi and phone at same time. It does not diasble blutooth dun. This update IMO is essential

Posted by: CassBH

I just installed it, so no comments yet, but I wish I had known it would automatically hard reset your device! Maybe I should have known this already, but I hate having to re-load everything. Is there any easy way to do this?

Also, can someone guide me toward directions on how to use the voice dialing with BT?

thanks,
Cass

Unfortuantely your stock reloading anything your sync wont reinstall. You have two items with the voice dialing. BTW if you press and hold your Internet button check ou the new comm manager. Getting back to voice dialing. The Voice speed dial is located in your programs area. You can manually click it but can also be activated by pressing your record button briefly. To install voice tags you need to go to voice speed dial located in the settings area. Once there you will see 4 tabs (1) Voice tag, (2) contacts, (3) application (4) about. Select tab (2) scroll to the contact you want to add a voice dial to and select it, then click the blue mic/speaker button on bottom right. When you do this the contact will open displaying all the numbers for that contact. Again select the number. Once selected click the red dot record button and speak your tag that you want to reference that number. It will record it and then auto stop. If you dont like the tag hit the 'X" to delete. The application button works the same but you are selecting what application you want to start. Once you are donr you can manually start the Voice tag by clicking on the icon in the programs section or just hit the record button. You can also select add voice tag while i your contacts list. You must be in your contact with the specific number selected then hit your menu button. Hope this helps

Mike,

As soon as I have a sec, I will try this out. So basically, you CAN voice dial when using a BT headset?

Thanks a ton for taking the time to post that info for me!

I see that there are icons for a few different things when you do this, but I am totally missing what they are for. Can you advise?

Also, I think I recorded the voice tags properly. What I don't understand is when you are ready to make a call, how do you start the voice recognition application?

Thanks for your patience.

I have not been able to get DUN working now after I have performed the update.

In the registry for the Dial Up Networking serivce there are no DLL's associated to implement this service.

Does anyone know of a work around?

BTW, I performed the update and then imediately did the hard-reset and subsequent soft-reset to avoid the Veri$on Customization.

Posted by: lawman0210

Yes Dun still works. you will have to follow the procedures again to reinstall dun. In order to use voice dial you can (1) momentarily press the record button on your phone or go to the programs tab and manually press the icon that says voice dial

Posted by: bajajoe

Has anyone had trouble connecting to thier wireless networks?

Posted by: frettfreak

If I get rid of all the VZW customization stuff again (which is DEFINATELY worth it), is there new cabs that represent the new features that I will have to install?

Posted by: frettfreak

Strike that last quote. Replace with this...

does anyone know what all the new cabs do on the software?? There is a TON of them.

THanks

Posted by: pwnz0riz0r

when you dl the update, do you dl to your PC then install it on your PPC? Where do i install the update? i would assume to the main memory, correct? i havent dl'd it to see if there is a readme, b/c im at work.

im an absolute newb with this stuff, so i appreciate yalls honesty and knowledge

Posted by: bajajoe

For frettfreak: It is on the starcom web site and the next questions answer is first you download it on your computer and then follow the instructions which is to sync with the handheld

Posted by: frettfreak

do you have a link to the info on starcom's site? I searched for an hour and then stood on hold for another hour with support fot them to tell me that they have no idea what I am talking about. I need to re-install my MMS and the name of the cab changed.

Frett,

I think this is what you are looking for:

Good luck!

Posted by: frettfreak

No, I have already downloaded and installed the update. I just need a list of the new cabs on the extended rom... Actually, I just need to know what all the new cabs do. Am I just missing it on that page?

I had the same problem with my MMS. All I did was do a hard reset and it took care of putting my MMS back on.

*An updated User Manual is available on the UTStarcom website detailing the changes in the Maintenance Release.

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS BELOW BEFORE INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE

XV-6700 Software Upgrade Utility Instructions

Welcome to the XV-6700 Software Upgrade Utility. This program will take you through the installation of the software update.

Before you continue, please ensure that the following items have been completed:

**Please sync the data on your device to your PC prior to initiating this upgrade. During the upgrade all third party applications and data will be lost. Once the upgrade is complete, you can sync with your PC transfer the data back on and reinstall the applications.

1. Perform a soft reset on your device. This can be done by pressing the ‘reset’ button, with the tip of the stylus, located on the bottom of the device next to the mini USB port.

2. This upgrade requires that ActiveSync 4.1 be installed on your computer. This may be a different version than the one with which the XV-6700 shipped. The most current version of ActiveSync is available as a free download from Microsoft at: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmob...tivesync41.mspx

3. Close all other applications on your device and PC.

4. Download the Maintenance Release version: APAC_VZW_20720_200_11000_Ship.exe to your computer. Do not attempt to run it from its current location.

5. Ensure that your device is charged at least 40%. You can check this by selecting Start>Settings>Power.

6. Connect your device to your PC via the USB cable and ActiveSync.

7. After you are connected using Activesync, double click on the software file: APAC_VZW_20720_200_11000_Ship.exe. Follow the prompts of the installation wizard. There are 3 stages to the upgrade, which will take about 20 minutes to complete.

**WARNING: Do not disrupt your device during the upgrade. Doing so may damage your device.

8. Once the update is complete, you will need to perform a normal reset. Pressing the reset button with your stylus, which is located on the bottom of the device next to the mini USB port.

Congratulations! You have successfully upgraded your XV-6700!

** Please note: If you see ‘Error 101’ message on PC prior to upgrade starting, please do not disconnect your device from the PC. Confirm ‘USB’ is on the device screen and start over with step 6. If you did disconnect your device, reconnect it to your PC, and then confirm ‘USB’ is on the device screen. Proceed with step 6, running the Upgrade Utility.

Has anyone figured out how to do the new voice dialing capability with a BT headset?

Posted by: frettfreak

it is there by default. You have to program in voice tags for each contact though. it isnt like VC where you can just say any name in the contact list (which I believe you can do on a LOT of other verizon phones that arent even running WM.. bastards!! but thats a whole other topic )

But doing a hard reset without stopping all the VZW crap from being installed is no good! If you have not tried using your phone without the VZW ware installed, I HIGHLY recommend it. It is WAY faster!!

Posted by: bajajoe

Do you mean we should not load the VZ cabs? Read my post re the update from the starcom page on vx6700 as to the other stuff and give me your thoughts.

Posted by: frettfreak

Some of the cabs you should install, BUT, I know I installed the update, and then before it went throught the VZW customization portion of setup, I soft reset, and I still have all the features, just not all the VZW customization and limitations. The phone is MUCH faster!! I know that is it ok to install almost all the cabs in the ROM, I am just not sure which ones I shouldnt install.

Posted by: Finns800m

Couldn't you already lock the buttons through the settings panel, so the phone can only be turned on with the power button? I have MS voice command, and already did the wifi/phone registry hack. Is there any other point to the update?

what exactly does the VZW customizatiom consist of?

Posted by: bajajoe

Read the pages from starcom.

Posted by: bajajoe

If you have the verizon version already you have thier custom rom already. Is it a problem on your phone? If it is then when you reload the new roms hit the reset button as soon as theybstart to load then it will skip putting them in . Try the phone and check it out . If not satisfied then reset hard again and let the fuul rom load. Takes 10 minutes tops to rtestore your phone.

A couple of days ago and downloaded Activesync and the Bell 6700 update, but couldn't get Activesync to detect my phone, anyway, last night I ended up doing an XP re-install on my wife's pc, and then I thought, hmm, maybe ActiveSync might see my phone now. Indeed it did, so I downloaded the UTStarcom software update for my phone, and that's when everything went bad. Shortly after initiating the update, I got a window telling me to do a soft reset of my phone (which I did), and then click "Next" to continue, which I did.

The next window that popped up gave me an error code specifically, Error 101 saying it was having trouble connecting to my device. XP stopped seeing my phone as did Activesync, and left me with the white Bell screen. Can't even power off the phone without removing the battery and neither soft, or hard resets could bring it back.

After waiting almost an hour on hold to talk with someone from Bell support, I was told that there is basically nothing they can do over the phone and that I should bring my phone into a Bell store where I assume they'll ship it off somewhere, reinstall WM5 and if I'm lucky I should have my phone back in 8-10 weeks.

Posted by: joyridevzw

So I just did the update and now I can't get ActiveSync 4.2 to recognize my device at all.

Maybe I just missed something but is there a fix for that?

It's really pissing me off

I feel ya bro. The same thing happened to me as I talk about above. My solution was to bring it back to Bell, and they swapped it out for a new one which took about two weeks.

Posted by: joyridevzw

Whats really odd is I was able to get it to sync right after I did the update but haven't done it since.

Posted by: joyridevzw

I got it all to work

I am using 4.1 now. The main difference it seems is that I was just using the USB cable before and now I am using the dock also.

WTF

But now I noticed that I have to wireless sync program on my phone

How do i get that back?

Posted by: bajajoe

If you can not active sync; reboot both the computer and the device then look at the name of the partnership in the sync program for example wm_pc1 and make the device name is the same as the original sync name for the device that you see in your active sync profile. ( Go to settings / about/ device id and there it is the device name) after this you should have no problems. If unsucessful remove the active sync program and reinstall it then let the device be discovered and it will sync. there is also an active sync update to 4.2

Posted by: bajajoe

Flash!!!!There is one place to check if you can connect . This is a tricky area on your 6700 go to programs/ wireless sync/wirelessync main screen/ hit menu/active sync setup make sure u have it enabled. All fixed

Posted by: joyridevzw

I checked for wireless sync where you said and it was still not found.

I did find it under the windows folder titled client provisioning

Odd

Oh well
