Best way to leave contract 2 months early?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I'm leaving Verizon for Sprint. My Verizon contract (2 years) runs through early August, and I want to take my current phone number with me to Sprint.

Assuming I take my phone number with me to Sprint today, what's the best way to terminate with Verizon? Should I just pay the monthly bills until my contract is satisfied in August, and then cancel? Will they even allow me to do that once I've taken my phone number to Sprint? If I cancel two months early, what penalties would I likely face?

Thnaks in advance.

Porting ur # 2 sprint now means your verizon account will be canceled when port is done (a few hours). That means you will have to pay the termination fee plus any other amounts owed to vz since u are still under contract.

Thanks. Sounds like I'd better wait the last 6 weeks before moving on. Seems bogus not to simply let me continue to pay through the remainder of my contract rather than stiff me for $175 additional, but whatever.

It's not bogus for them...especially if it allows them to collect more money from you.

Seriously, this is one of the things I like about CellOne, they don't use a flat ETF. Instead, they charge a certain amount for each month remaining on your contract, which seems pretty fair.

Cingular used to prorate the ETF but they also converted to flat rate $175(i think)...I wouldnt mind this option but since when the wireless cos been pro-customer lol

Yeah. Seems kinda rough charging someone $175 for cancelling even one day early. In my case, I don't even really want to cancel. I just want to port my number. I'd be happy to keep paying the monthly charges until the contract is up. But it sounds like they'll cancel me once the number is ported whether I want them to or not.

I was hoping to move to Sprint before an upcoming trip in July and take advantage of their Phone As Modem plan while on the road. But my contract isn't up until August 4. Not sure it's worth the extra $175 Verizon would hit me up for though. The other option I guess would be to not port my number and just get a new one, but I'm not sure it's worth that particular hassle either.

Color me bummed.

Why not use verizon phone as modem? $59 a month for 2 month is less than $175.

Well, because my current phone doesn't support that function, and the only way to get a phone that does is to sign a new contract with verizon which ropes me into another two years. But Sprint offers PAM at $39 unlimited, which is a $480 savings compared to Verizon over those two years (assuming I kept the PAM service that long.)

So I'm screwed unless I want to pay Verizon $175 now, or an extra $480 over two years.

I think you could sign up sprint now and port number 2 month later.

There's going to be a lot of sad people on EBay and CraigsList when they find out that phone they bought from another person somehow signs them up for a contract. Seems you have only looked at this from the side of hating Verizon. Good luck with Sprint, you'll need it.

Why would I hate verizon, and what gave you the impression that I did? I've been a Verizon wireless customer since before they were even Verizon. My first phone said GTE. If you're talking about my whining over the ETF, I'm fully aware that this would apply to any wireless carrier, not just Verizon.

In this case, they merely didn't offer the plan I wanted at a competitive price. So I switced. No hatred in that.

You should just sign up at Sprint with a new number, and when your contract is over.. port your number over.

Just pay the full retail price for the phone, no resigning a contract to do that. Although, the money you save on resigning the contract is about the same as the ETF.

Who said he's *****ing? Did you bother to even read the thread or are you attempting to use your apparently faulty ESP?

If Verizon says you can renew your contract 2 months prior to your actual contract date using the NE2, then why can you not cancel 2 months before ? my 2 cents...

Becaue the eligibility to upgrade 2 months prior to the contract being up is a privelage that comes with signing a two yr contract. This way you don't have to wait a full two years before upgrading. It's just another incentive to get people to sign a 2yr.

AHHH, thnx for the explanation.. Well it sure worked for me, just signed another 2 years going on for 8 years total!!! I have no problems with Verizon, but I wish they would offer better text messaging plans for like 3 bucks.. Its only text messaging...

If text were extremely cheap, it would really cut into the number of voice minutes used. I do agree there should be an umlimited plan somewhere for 20-25 dollars. It'd be more expensive than every one else but at least it would be a similar offering.
