V3c outer screen spontaneously dies

The outer screen on my Verizon RAZR V3c was working fine up until just now, when I looked down and saw this:

I didn't drop it, spill anything on it, or abuse it in any way.

Powered the phone off and back on, removed the battery -- no change.

I've had it for maybe 6 months.

Any ideas? I have insurance through Verizon, but I'm kind of afraid if I return it they'll hand me a replacement that doesn't have OBEX enabled like mine happened to when I got it.
