Can you have a Treo 700p w/o a data plan?

Here is the question...
I want a Treo 700 p with Verizon voice service. I am not interested in a data plan because I will use the Treo mainly for calls and medical applications on the smartphone. Verizon has told me that I can have a "pay as you go plan" for data access and warned me to be careful to avoid a large bill (> 1K).
Does anyone have any experience w/ this type of scenario?
Is it possible to change the Treo 700p's network setting to prevent an accidental connection to the data network?
Should I consider another smartphone w/ verizon that would allow better control of my network settings?
Any advice will be great!

You can make the Treo prompt you every time it needs to connect to the Data network.
Too bad Whore-izon :-) doesn't let you "lock out" data services on a phone... that would eliminate the possibility of a large bill.

Do what many people have done on their 650s.
You can make a new Network connection, that has bogus info in it. so if the phone every tries to connect for any reason it will use the bogus connection and wont be able to connect.

I saw that amazon.com is selling the 700p for $299 which includes a $150 rebate. However, they make you sign up for a data plan. Is there any way around getting a data plan and not paying 3-$499? I am switching from t-mobile. thanks.

You can drop a data plan later, but I'd be careful because some promotions give a discount when you apply with a data plan, in which case you may need to keep it active for a few months.

Sorry to jump in, I bought a smartphone already and i have to activate it. Verizon told me that I have to have a data plan inorder to activate the phone. What I'm planning to do is activate a dataplan with them so they will activate my smartphone and then cancel later on. Can i do that and my smartphone will stay active? also, after I cancel the data plan will I be charge for time spend online (I got the samsung sch-i730, it has wifi).

I was not aware nor did I think that you were required to have a data plan with a smart phone. Only if you wanted to get a lower price on a smartphone if you planned on buying it from Verizon did they require you to get a data plan. I called re:the treo 700p and it would cost me an additional $100 to purchase it as a new customer if I did not want to have a data plan with it. Thus, I see no reason why you need a data plan.
Also, I am confused at the price Amazon is offering for the treo700p ($299). However I think that is with a data plan. I wonder if I could cancel the data plan once I have it. Does anyone have experience with this? I have bought a t-mobile phone from them in the past & I took it to the store to activate it. Verizon said I call them to activate vs. going to the store which confuses me because when you order it via Amazon you don't get all the choices of ordering insurance, text messages etc. Help anyone. Also, if I decide not to go with the treo what verizon phone would you recommend? the 8300? NO MOTOROLA!

you are required to have a data plan on VZW nowadays.
it can however be a pay as you go plan. meaning it only cost you if you use the data.
In order to get the $100 advance device descount you have to sign up for the unlimited data plan, and i believe keep it for 30 days.
