UPS just dropped it off. Smaller phone than I thought. Very nice. I'll report back after it is charged and I've had time to play with it. If anyone cares to host pictures let me know.

Posted by: iJITSU

pic with it opened.

Posted by: hberbout123

nice.. where did u buy it from

Posted by: iJITSU

Oh, I think you know . I got it from this excellent retailer: www.smart-mobile-gadgets.com. They delivered on their promise to have the phone first.

Posted by: Ishimaru

Top notch retailer, just needs to switch to FedEx and they'd be perfect

thank you so much for the nice complement ... yes to me was huge responsibility to deliver as I promised , before any one else even the big suppliers,

i worked very hard for it i paid extra money for this shipment and yet i maintained the lowest price , this will continue from now on my price will be the lowest on the internet or even ebay. The next step is the support ROM UPDATE etc.,

Posted by: iJITSU

Yes, I'm looking forward to a long relationship of obsessive supply and demand

I don't think the supply will be obsessive....just the demand!

Yes, just the demand.

I ordered one from him today too... great seller! I had ordered from another company on ebay who claimed to have the unit in-stock but turned out not.. they did give me a full refund though. Mine will be here tomorrow! Can't wait!!

Posted by: hbelton

With the free shipping, mine won't be here until the 27th. That sux!!

No, I wasn't complaining about the service. It was my choice to use the free shipping rather than paying for overnight.

This one's on me

Posted by: hbelton

hberbout, do you have any accessories for it yet? Cig adapter, sync cable, or AC adapter?

i ordered cases car chargers etc..

Posted by: iJITSU

Well, so far I'm really liking this phone. I don't have a real preference in regards to bar vs flip form factors (I see benefits/drawbacks to both) but I've been using a bar type phone for a long while so it's different using a flip. Form factor is great, build quality seems good, looks nice, has been performing well so far. Calls, messaging, web, music, video all a pleasure.

Posted by: Perceptions

Adding my two cents:

Form factor and is lighter than a RAZR, however it makes the phone feel a little cheap in your hand. The RAZR while being a little heavier gives a nice solid feel in your hand and the Qtek 8500 is almost there but not quite.

The number keys are laid out pretty well howver the soft keys, directional keys, home and return are a little too close for my comfort.

The menu speed is fantastic. It is the fastest menu speed for a smartphone I have ever used (Compared to HTC 2125, MPX220, SMT5600).

My biggest gripe at the moment:
Weak GSM 1900 reception. I do not know if this is an isolated incident or a fluke but in my house reception is 4-6 on a scale of 10. With previous phones my reception would drop to 1 bar at the worst and would always hold a signal. However with my Qtek 8500 I have seen my phone go to No Service on three seperate incidents and search for a signal.
I hope others can respond and prove me wrong but at the moment I will have to monitor this problem. On the other hand GSM 850 reception is excellent.

hey guys if you dont mind then whats so good about this phone that it is so expensive ????

The biggest thing for me was form factor. I was tired of years carrying a bulky P800/P900 and PPCs to have my email and internet on the phone. The Qtek 8500 has solved that problem of being able to have a truely pocketable phone that can be carried everywhere and anywhere and still get the job done.

With the exception of the reception issue I am having at the moment the phone is well designed and the keypad is not that bad (I probably have fat fingers). I am really pulling for this phone but if I see a losing cause it will go straight back.

Posted by: Slayer

I agree. It has replaced my HP iPAQ 1940 PDA, and my SE K750. It is thinner and better-looking than both separately, not to mention together. Furthermore it does 99% of what I used to do with my PDA (very little data entry - it was mainly a glorified desk diary and contact list) and 99% of what I used to do with my SE (I almost never use phone cameras).

It is also not THAT expensive - when I think about how much a separate PDA and phone would cost, or *shudder* something like the HP rw6828, various O2 XDA models, etc. this thing is a real bargain.

Oh, and it feels and looks great. Far better than any RAZR in my opinion, even if the keypad is a shameless knock-off.

phone just release so not sure.

Posted by: Ishimaru

it supports both, but there's a debate on whether the s300 (could be the 8500 as well), has enhanced mono; but i'm thinking that's not actually true as i listened to the song on my pc and it sounded the same as on my phone.

any one with qtek 8500 can u tell me if in the setting when you press accesbility you have option to use system fonts big or large or small or there is not setting for fonts in that menu ?

Posted by: JPR

Did you receive a case with the Qtek 8500? If so what style is the case and how is the quality?

It's a typical Normal/Large option.

Qtek doesn't come with a case.. anyone want to sell their Dopod S300 case?

I'm getting that too. Side by side with my JAMin with T-Mobile SIMs in both, the JAMin gets much better reception.

Has anyone had their EDGE connection stop working after a period of time? It seems to time out, then have an error. Upon reconnecting everything is fine. Is there a way to make the EDGE connection to disconnect manually. The end button doesn't seem to do anything.

I'm loving the size of it though. I'm waiting for my A2DP Bluetooth adapter to arrive so I can listen to music in the car.

Posted by: rperalta

Is the case for Dopod S300 horizontal (sideways) or flip case?

Does anybody know who's selling the case online?

Posted by: futuredoc

My Qtek 8500 arrived yesterday and i haveta say that its one SWEET device! Definitely blows other devices with the same form factor out of the way. I found the RAZR a tad small for my taste while the 8500 seems just about right!

I have to stress one thing though, the seller hberbout123 is SIMPLY FANTASTIC! More than the device itself, i liked his service and his genuine concern for his customers. He went out of the way to help me out. Herbout123, you can add me to your list of "FOREVER CUSTOMERS". You have my respect mate! If you are ever in Miami, EVERYTHING IS ON ME!

Highly recommended guys, you can order from him without a second thought!

I've ran into the same edge connection problem. Would really like to find the manually disconnect end button hack too.

If you hold down the Home key, the Quicklist will pop up. Select Comm Manager and then hit option 4. It will disconnect the data connection. Also, if you use the Windows Basic home screen, the carrier/date/time section is the fist section highlighted. If you just press the dpad the Comm Manager will come up.

I received my Qtek 8500 on Wed 6/21. Awesome!!!

I called www.smart-mobile-gadgets.com on Tuesday at 2:00pm and all the orders for the day had been shipped. Hberbout123 did not hesitate to tell me that I will ship it right away. To me that's a good businessman, willing to go out of his way and extra effort for customers.

No doubt I'll get my next phone from him again.

Clearvue document viewers are included in an additional CD. No sign of office apps though.

I ordered this one:
http://www.mobileplanet.com/product.asp?code=125691
( i.Tech Clip S35 )

It's got A2DP and a 3.5mm audio jack with which you can plug in a cassette adapter, RCA cord, or FM Transmitter.
I figure that can sit in the car, and hopefully will be able to automatically connect when I get in and press the play button on the front.

Does the noreve case make the phone bulky?
How does the phone stay in the case because I do not see a plastic screen that can use to hold the case?

There is also a pouch case from this link.

Which one do you prefer?

Thanks,

Is it me or is the battery life on the Qtek 8500 simply superb? BT on all day, fiddling around with it all day, listening to some music and still has 80% battery life!!! I'm glad they stuck the Wizard's processor into this. As i mentioned earlier, OMAP processor's are best restricted to smartphones!!!

Loving this device more each minute

I am unable to upload the app thanks to Hofo's upload limit. It is called HTCUnlock-CVS (same tool used for all other WM5 smartphones) and should be pretty easy to find at http://www.spv-developers.com/

Now that HTC has decided to discontinue the qtek line, I feel hesitant to purchase a qtek phone. Are my feelings justified?

I know it would be a collectors item, but what about support and accessories?

The original press release (rebranding) indicated that while new phones would be rebranded, they would continue support for all other products thru Qtek, and I expect that will end up applying to Dopod too eventually, I'd expect them to drop that name as well pretty soon...

There are some news items today on HTC that show the Qtek 8500 as the official name, while online resellers will begin to call it the HTC StrTrk...dunno what exactly that means, but I wouldn't be suprised to see it 'rebadged' at some point, or maybe when that rumored version w/ the 128mb ROM shows up (if ever) it'll be an HTC branded device.

Currrently, the new HTC website in Europe shows this phone as the Qtek 8500 while the other devices sport the new HTC brand and logo. So I think yea, it's supported and will be supported...

I wouldn't be hesitant to buy it in Qtek form, it'll be supported as well as Qtek always has, which isn't that great from here in the US...hehe...

Anyway, just my thoughts on it...

Chris

Posted by: Ishimaru

hopefully this will mean CID locking will be a thing of the past.

Posted by: iJITSU

I just noticed that with the native email on the 8500 you can attach files like spreadsheets, etc directly from the email. On the 8310 or 2125 I only saw an option for a pic or voice note and had to use the file manager to send an email with an attachment that was not those two types. Maybe I just missed it on the previous phones but regardless it's an option now.

yes , that correct. the support will continue for 8500 and the previous models. only the new releases will be under htc logo.

the 8500 should have AKU2.3 installed (as my s300 does), and i think the 2125 only has 2.2 with the latest ROM update.

Time for a n00b question...

What is TCPMP and how is it better than WMP?

Posted by: iJITSU

The Core Pocket Media Player (TCPMP) is just about the best media player for Windows Mobile. It will play almost every type of audio and video file. With video, it will play most divx, mpeg, avi, mov, wmv, etc files without converstion or resizing required. That means you can surf the web from your phone, download a vid, and open/play it with TCPMP. It also has an equalizer, supports album art, etc.

Posted by: Ishimaru

i find videos on a smartphone to be pointless as what's the point of watching on such a small screen? a PPC would be better.

Ordered Friday Morning, arrived Today. Smart Mobile Gadgets Rules. One question. Is there any way to get it to read the operator off the SIM and not the tower? I read Cingular and not T-Mobile. Not a big deal, just curious.

it does, but i just don't really like the interface of TCPMP. WMP is there, and it's easy to use, and has some good skins for it. and shows album art i know TCPMP does too, but not as good as WMP does. for an mp3 player, it's not that good, for videos, it's awesome.

Am I missing it, or is there no option for Vibrate and Ring together?

i have it on mine. under profiles, edit the normal one.

I wouldn't care to watch a full length movie, but it's great for sharing family movies or watching video online while surfing.

For me, movies on my MPx220 have been great for what I needed them for, and TCPMP has by far been a better product for watching videos. I use it for entertainment on-the-go, I don't care that it's a small screen, but having video in addition to music is nice. I really don't want the bulk of a PPC device, in addition to a phone especially, and the PPC phones just don't do it for me, I much prefer to have a numeric keypad and have the device on the smartphone OS, it's just much easier for me to use when it's purpose is primarily a phone (for me).

I'll have to give TCPMP a shot. I dont watch a lot of videos on my phone, but I like testing things out...

Thanks!

hberbout,

I recieved my 8500 today, I'm a happy man. Question, should I be able to register on "My Qtek" this phone? It give me an invalid IMEI# message when I try?

Posted by: JPR

Can anyone give me the internet or wap settings for T-Mobile USA and how you setup configurate them on the HTC 8500.

Posted by: lokkje

Not to be a ****, but check the sticky at the top of this forum. They are correct and work (IF you have a data plan).

I also got mine this morning, it is beautiful. I had a cab file to load the cingular settings, which worked great on my sp5, but when I tried it on the 8500 it said I didnt have permission to do that, so now i need to find the settings to enter them manually. Does anyone know where I can do find them. thanks.

Anybody using a case for their 8500?

I only found Novere case.

Can you please post your impression if you are using Novere right now?

I got mine from Smart Mobile Gadgets, http://www.smart-mobile-gadgets.com. Everything went as advertised.

It's not bad. Fits well and stays put. It doesn't come with a clear sheet over the screen or keypad, so for now I'm leaving the plastic on.

Posted by: hbelton

I came across http://www.myqtek.com which looks like it will have some good stuff for the 8500. When I tried to register, it gave me and "Invalid IMEI#" message and would not allow me to register. Upon further investigation, I found that the site does not list the US as a country on its list. Should we who bought the phone in the US expect to be able to register and use this site?

Thanks hbelton,

If it doesn't have a clear sheet over the screen or keypad:
How does the phone stay in place while in the case?
Does it look bulky when it's on?

Also, I just ordered the original case (horizontal) from MobilePlanet.com but I won't receive it until next week because it's coming from the Expansys Hong Kong warehouse.

Posted by: hbelton

Looking at it on the site, not sure how clear it is, but it has like strategicly placed "wings" that are formed to the shape of the edges of the phone. They hold it securely enough that it doesn't move.
It fits the phone very well, adding very little to its thickness except where the upper and lower sections connect.

Has no one else been to http://www.myqtek.com?

Posted by: deejayshakur

congrats, new 8500-owners!

i'm doing some research on WM-smartphone ed. and trying to determine how it differs from the WM5 or PPC2003 operating systems. basically, i have a favor to ask. i will be using the phone for medically-related programs and it's essential that i can run these on the WM-smartphone OS. if somebody could comment if they have installed any drug programs (epocrates, mobilePDR), or would be willing to test this for me (i'll send over the install file), that'd be great. no gimmicks here, but i'd appreciate the favor from anybody.

do basic programs like adobe reader and iSilo work with WM-smartphone?

bottom line, i want the smaller form factor but don't want to lose out too much because of the WM-smartphone OS.

THANKS in advance. feel free to PM me.

If you have applications written for the PPC it is pretty unlikely it will run on the smartphone OS unless there is a specific version of it for the smartphone. You can check the vendor's website or contact them to find that out, but in most cases, it isn't possible to run on the smartphone...you loose some capability on the smartphone OS that is typically used on the PPC platform (touch screen, screen size which translates to form size in an application).

Any chance you can post some pics of it with the case on? Shots from different angles when open and closed?

What games, if any, does this phone come with? Does it have solitaire?

I know it sounds like a juvenile question. I've just never owned a smartphone before and I think this'll be my first.

myqtek.com is not really a Qtek operated site. In fact, it is run by Dangaard, (one of) the major distributor (s) in Europe. Since, however, your unit wasn't purchased through them, you will not be able to access their ftp site (for ROM upgrades and such).

The good news is that depending on where you purchased the device, your retailer may/may not offer independent access to ROM upgrades. I know that the place where I purchased my 8500 (qtekphonestore), operates an ftp with ROM updates, when they become available. Contact your retailer to see if they offer the same service.

Alternatively, if you did'nt buy from such a retailer, there are various sources online where one can d/l the above updates, although the legality of doing so is debatable.

Posted by: JPR

Has anyone used any third party software on their Qtek 8500 yet that works? I have tried Agenda Fusion and MobileMate and they are not yet configured for the 8500 yet. Also when I access T-Mobile (USA) the menu does not fill up the screen on the phone. Has anyone else experienced this problem yet?

Posted by: lokkje

I've installed several third-party programs on my phone (ie Resco Registry Editor, Resco Explorer, Fonix Voice Dial, Facade, Fizz Weather, and others). Of course, the ones that I installed are compatible with WM2005 so they have no problems.

I'm also trying Mobile TimeSync which syncs my clock with NTP servers on the Internet. I have seen that their menus do not completely fill up the screen, but it still works. I had one or two that did the same thing on my MPx220, but I don't remember which programs they were.

Posted by: cjasus730

The progs you would need are:
Resolution aware/compatible for 240x320 QVGA screens
WM 5.0 compatible

Although WM 5.0 apps, unlike S60v3/v2 are backwards compatible with WM2003, WM2003 apps don't always play nice with WM 5.0.

Check out SBSH Papyrus/Facade, Tube 2, CoPilot Live 6, Newsbreak, and Juniskins to mod the Homescreen nicely. I find that all the above work nicely with the 8500.

Oh, I think you know . I got it from this excellent retailer: www.smart-mobile-gadgets.com. They delivered on their promise to have the phone first.

Well after reading all these beaming recommendations, I just hit the button and ordered one from him. I hope I got the order in early enough that it gets shipped today. I got the OVERNIGHT shipping!!! Yes I'm very bad at waiting, I'm a instant gratification type of guy.

Posted by: encece

Bought mine from MadMonkeyBoy.com (as always). Great smartphone...and I've owned them all. Dont like the non-mini-usb connector....but what can you do!

Posted by: encece

This is my first experience with microSD.....DAMN they are small!

Yes!!!! I just recieved my tracking number, this dude doesn't waste any time.

Posted by: hylton

I've been close to pulling the trigger lately myself, but w/ all these problems being posted about the Qtek and missed calls...I'm gonna wait it out just a bit longer...maybe even until the next ROM update on the Qtek shows up.

the reception has been fine, the sync with outlook is excellent. it's the missed calls that make near-worthless at the moment.

missed calls? is it because of the service or the phone?

Posted by: iJITSU

There is an entire thread dedicated to the missed calls issue. The phone, when untouched for 15mins to an hour will stop receiving calls until you "wake" it up.

No such problems here - but am running a Dopod S300.

Seeing Active Sync does not have an opition to backup and restore files with WM5, what are the perfered ways to backup and restore files for Qtek 8500? I

Hi everyone,

I have just noticed that my Qtek 8500 is only registering the first 10 digits of the caller ID. Today I received a call from another country, and the full number should have been something in the form +(99-99) 9999 9999, which would mean a total of 12 digits. Yet only the first 10 were registered. Is anyone else experiencing this? It might be operator/network related, so if you could please check this and report I would appreciate it. In case you do have a Qtek 8500 and can confirm that it does register more than 10 digits, please let me know as well, so that I may contact my provider. Thanks in advance,

Alan

Posted by: lokkje

Sorry, mate. In the US I only have 10-digits.

Posted by: alanbr

Just ask someone from any other country to call you. I could do that. Do you want to give me your number? You do not even have to answer the call, so there will be no charges for both of us.

Shouldn't I of gotten my tracking number on Monday?

OK, I found out that this issue was operator related. Using a SIM from a different operator made this clear.

Posted by: alanbr

I received my Qtek 8500 and have noticed that it does not have an MMS Network Profile among the various "Connect to" options. Since the profile "The Internet" was already being used by my GPRS account, and given the fact that the apn for the MMS account is different from the apn of the GPRS account, I had to use a different profile. I ended up using "WAP Network" to configure MMS. Not a big issue, but should be solved in a future ROM update, as this can make it difficult for inexperienced users to configure MMS. Just for the sake of checking this, does anyone who has a Qtek 8500 have the MMS Network profile? Checking this is simple: just go to Settings-Connections-GPRS-Menu-Add, and then on the second field, which says "Connect to:", use the right button to scroll among the available profiles. On mine I only have Secure WAP Network, WAP Network, Work, and The Internet. Looking forward to hearing from other Qtek 8500 owners. Thanks in advance.
