Free Wap Homepage Web site

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I could never find a wap homepage site that I liked...
so I just went ahead and created one: www.waphomepage.com

It's totally free, and a lot easier than anything else I've seen.

It would be great if a bunch of you could give it a try.
I just finished it - would love to get some feedback.

looks great! this will be great for many of the users here. I would definately use it but I just learned wml and created my own pages on my domain i run off a server in my house running hottproxy. For anyone that doesnt know wml though which is probably the majority of people this will be greatly appreciated. good job!!!

So you created it! Its my favorite by far, because I can put whatever I want on my links and love having the address bar right there. Kudos buddy!

Can anyone print out the original inputs for the lg 9800 starting with menu>0>000000 WAP and the homepage?
Also I have been using BitPim and cannot get it to recognize my phone since I changed the above. I can't get them on the same port.
Thanks,
sgh225

for some reason i cant access it on my phone. when i set it as my proxy address, it says for internet services call *611. for some reason it doesn't matter what my homepage is set to, it goes to the proxy address. any reason why>?

I believe his site is setup to be used as a homepage not a proxy address/WAP Gateway. You should set the homepage to his address and find your own proxy/WAP gateway (or do what a lot of us do and use HoTTProxy)

The reason why something would go to the proxy address instead of a homepage would be if you left your homepage as http://homepage, then you will be directed to the default homepage setup for you on the WAP gateway. (i.e. --- this is done so if you don't specify your own homepage on the phone, the gateway can automatically forward you to a default homepage).

Personally, I have found a slight performance increase when setting the homepage on the phone to the exact address of your homepage rather than leaving it as http://homepage.

I think it eliminates one round trip to the server when set directly (hence a slight increase in speed.....especially when you aren't getting the best reception).

To the OP: kudos. I won't be using your site since I run my own (and setup my friends with their own custom templates) but I'm glad to see someone is finally setting up a flexible solution for the public not-so-tech-savy people.

well, i have the gateway as google.com, so it probably has the homepage always be google no matter what else. i will try to look for a proxy that will use what i have set as my homepage. great job on this (though it would be nice if it could be a proxy, if you catch my drift)

also i tried hottproxy, and it doesnt work, and i followed the instructions fully. ill just use a public proxy

1) Your homepage and WAP proxy address will more than likely be different. Google can be used as a homepage.
You cannot use it as a proxy/gateway. This is your first problem.

2) Considering the above, it seems that the complication that you are having with HoTTProxy is due to
a) misuse or misunderstanding (I can help clarify if you can describe exact steps you took to set it up)
b) I'm willing to bet it also has to do with firewall/router setup.....I'm guessing you probably don't have port forwarding configured correctly.

strangly enough when i use google.com as the proxy address, it goes faster than any proxy.

also, if would be nice if you can help me with the hotpproxy, but im almost sure i am forwarding the port (as i do it the same way i forward any other port) although i did find a proxy that works, at least for now

EDIT: oh sorry i misread your post.

here is what i did, also i have a vx5200

Ran hottproxy_admin and went to localhost:8085
changed the configuration, just the homepage to the one i made at waphomepage.com
then i made a user with the name as my cell phone number and the password as vzw (btw after i did that i looked at the manage users, and it had 4 users there, all with no names. i dont know if its supposed to be like that, but i figured i'd let you know)
then i closed out of the localhost page and hottproxy_admin
i went to my routers setup home, clicked virtual servers (i have a belkin something or other)
I clicked the box under enable, for the description i put hottproxy, for the inbound port i put 9201-9201, for private ip address i put the ip address of my computer (the 192.168 one). The one thing i wasnt sure of was the Type, so i tried all three (tcp, udp, tcpudp) and none of them worked. (i tried them all at the same time and then each individually)
Then i clicked apply changes.
Then i ran hottproxy.exe
on my phone i went to the secret menu and to the wap settings.
i changed both the primary and secondary address to the ip address i got at whatsmyip.com.
i changed the primary and secdonary ports and lxl ports to 9201
i left the user password at vzw
and i have the homepage set to the one i made at waphomepage.com

when i try to access my mobile web, it says Connection Timed out.

btw, i tested it with my firefox on the computer, and it works with my private ip address, but not the public one. im guessing that would be the problem

i hope you can help me.

Well your process looks pretty good....there are a few things I notice which need to be corrected:

1) when looking at "manage users", you shouldn't see 4 blank users...something is wrong there. Try deleting all the blanks and recreating your account. You should have one user and it's name should be your 10 digit phone number.

2) All your port forwarding information looks correct......some routers are kinda finicky when it wants you to input your private IP address for the computer handling requests on port 9201 (i.e. - some want the full address of 192.168.1.100 (or whatever yours is) and some only want the last 3 digits = 100). The later is the case with Linksys routers....I don't know about yours but is something to consider.
As far as type, you should be fine with keeping is as TCP

3) I'm not sure about changing the lxl ports (I have always left mine as the default which is 0443 and it has always worked for me)

4) When you say you tested with Firefox, can you be more specific? Are you saying that you are typing your private IP address in the address bar and it is forwarding you to your waphomepage.com page? I find this a little odd if it is happening but see what happens when you type "Your Public IP:9201" (without quotes) in the address bar.

Let me know how it goes.

thanks for replying. i fixed the manage users thing. when the hottproxy folder is in a directory that has a space in it, it will appear like that, so i put it into c:\hottproxy and now its fine.

also the router just has me fill in the last spot in the ip, which is 100 (i'm putting in the ip of this computer, not the router, right?)

as for the lxl ports, i had them at 0443 and that didnt work, so i tried at 9201 and it also didnt work.

and in firefox, i went to Tools > Options > Connection Settings and switched it to Manual Proxy Configuration. I put in the internal ip address of this computer 192.168.2.100 and port at 9201, and after it asks for the password it works fine. When i do the public ip, it cannot connect.

Are you running Windows XP? If yes, I'm wondering if you have a software firewall enabled...........I'd test around with that and see if it has an effect.

Another thought is that I hope you are setting up your router for Port forwarding and not port triggering.....there is a difference.

Posted by: voodoo721

yeah I'm forwarding the port, and I do have an XP, but i tried it while disabling the firewall and it still didnt work.

I found your post in the parent forum...........you should not forward port 9201 back to the router.....this will cause problems. I have a feeling that whatever was intially causing your connection problems was probably corrected at one point but you probably changed a bunch of things prior to that in an attempt to make it work and forgot to change your settings back..........these leftovers may now be causing problems.

Another thing to check is the HoTTProxy log.....does it show anything unusual? (i.e. - usually the username for you phone is your number....occasionally this is not the case....for example if you had ported your number over from a different carrier than there may be a difference). Looking at the HoTTProxy log will show you who is trying to connect and you may find the discrepancy there.

Posted by: voodoo721

forget it, i found another way. i made a website at googlepages.com that links to it.

couldn't get connected to my homepage until I realized that the caps in my user ID were reset to lower case; working nicely now and the flexibility suits me perfectly.

Thanks again.
If I can ever find some time out of the lab/massaging data/reading journal articles, maybe I can learn wml, but until then your site is much appreciated.

Does anyone know how to get to the instructions on this forum for changing the code, etc and setting up my vx9800. I know they were on here a long time ago but I can't find them now. Thanks.

You should probably be able to search for some LG V/VX9800 WAP threads using the search function. However, with that phone it should be pretty simple--go into the menu, press 0 to access the service code entry, enter 000000 as the sevice code, and then go to the WAP menu from the service menu where you can enter all the WAP information (without needing to change anything in any files or anything like that, as you would on the newer phones).

There are quite a few helpful WAP threads in the VZW LG sub-forum that generally do a pretty good job of explaining it all (including containing questions of this type and answers to them) and might be worth checking out.

Ok I got my own WapHomepage to work, but anything I click brings me to "HTTP Error: 404 Not Found". Why can I get to the homepage but not follow any links? Feel free to email me, or just reply below.

Thanks.

What do you use as your WAP proxy?
