What to expect working as a Sales Consultant in a corp. store

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: MrAlifEkin

I'm really tired of seeing the countless threads that pop up asking the same questions over and over. So, hopefully a moderator could make this a sticky or something.

1. Are you commisioned?
Yes we are commissioned. Yes you get an hourly wage as well. How much? It depends on your maket and your experience. You could start anywhere from making 8.50/hr-12.00/hr. Commission changes every year. There is no set way of telling you how much you'll make. An average rep who half-a**es his job will make between 30k-35k/ year. A good rep will make 40k+. Again depending on your market, whether your a busy store or not, the potential to make 50K a year is definitely there.

2. I have an interview, what do i expect?
Expect to be questioned on past experiences. How did you handle a certain situation? Any success stories from past sales jobs, work ethics, and pretty much the same questions you hear at every interview. If you can prove you can sell, and you have a knack for talking with people then your in.

3. What do I wear on my first day?
Please use common sense here. If you can't figure out what you're going to wear on the first day on the job, then you really have to question why your there. A nice dress shirt/polo shirt/ button down business casual with khakis or slacks. Obviously, no tennis shoes. Dress shoes are appropriate. Again, if you haven't figured this out on your own then you shouldn't be there in the first place.

4. Do I get a demo line?
Yes you geta demo line. Yes it's unlimited everything. Depending on who your ARSM is you may have a spending limit of $50/month or you may not. Part of this spending limit is ringtones, games, wallpapers etc.
You're demo line is your business line. A tool, if you may. It's used to demo to other customers the features for cingular. Use it to show how to download ringtones, surf the internet, tether, whatever.....This is the number that will appear on your business cards.

5. Do I get discounts on rateplans?
After 3 months of employment you get two ERPs (employee rate plans). You pay nothing for these lines. The first ERP is 1000 day minutes, and the second one is 500 day minutes. Each of these lines get 200 txt, 200mms, 5MB of medianet (internet), and fast forward each month. Nights and weekends can be added for 9.99 per month as well as mobile to mobile for the same price. 7pm nights and weekends cannot be added to an ERP. Daytime minutes do not rollover. Other features like pda connect or insurance can all be added for the same price customers pay.

6. Do you get discounts on phones?
Yes but the discount kinda sucks. 30% off retail. That's it. Your better off finding your phone on ebay.

7. What can I expect on my first day?
Expect training, training, and more training. You'll sit in front of a computer for a couple hours a day watching videos, reading about "company rules" , taking assessments, etc. Depending on your manager he/she may mix this in with "shadowing", which is sitting with another rep watching how to do the job, and how to work the systems. This was my training. I've seen some reps go to a week or two week long training class. It all depends. But one thing is for sure. The name, "Learning Edge" will be calling you in your sleep

8. How old do I have to be to work at a Corp. Store?
You must be 18 yrs old to work at a Cingular Wireless Corporate Store. Contracts are being signed, and you have to be of legal age in order for the contracts to be valid.

9. What kind of experience is needed?
This depends on how desperate the store location is. Usually they look for people with 2-3+ years in sales. Preferrebly wireless sales (obviously).

10. And last but not least, one of the most questioned aspect of working at the store......What is your quota like?
I think this is one of the worst things about the job. Gone are the days of just coming to work and worrying about your activation quota. We have a frickin quota for everything. You are required to not only hit an activation quota, but an opportunity quota as well. Upgrades, activations, migrations (moving a former at&t customer to cingular), relocations, and pre-paid activations are all considered an opportunity. You will also be required to maintain a certain "dollar amount"/opportunity for features. You will also have to maintain a certain percentage for $59.99+ rateplans with your opportunities. If you think that's bad enough you also have an accessory quota. Again, a certain "dollar amount" /opportunity. What these percentages and dollar amounts come to all depend on what market your in. For instance, in my market I am required to hit 100 opportunites per month. Out of these opportunities, 40 of them have to be activations. I have to maintain $10.50/opportunity for features, $35/opportunity for accessories, and 30% of my rate plans that i've upgraded, migrated, relocated, activated, etc. have to be 59.99+ rate plans. You are always required to hit the activation quota and opportunity quota. For the features, 59.99 rateplan, and accessories you only have to hit two of those three. Everything I've stated above is what is required to achieve 100% of the quota. The company allows you to hit 80% of your quota to keep your job. Three months of under 80% achievement and you will be termintated (I've heard rumors that this has changed, so someone correct me if i've wrong).

Well, that's all the main questions that i see posted on these threads at least twice a week. Hopefully this will clean up the agent forum a little more. For you fellow employees out there feel free to add to the list.

so if you apply how long does it generally take to get a call back or anything?

It depends. I was called back two days after i applied. If the store is really in need of more people, then they will call you asap.

It took them a week and a half to call me back. But yea, i guess it all depends how fast the manager there works to hire you.

great post! stuck

Posted by: straylightrise

Man I love my indirect location. Lol.

We got tough quotas tho too... THE ANR Lines are not a bad deal as long as your with the company.

Basically, direct gives you more perks and indirect is less intense and you get more leeway.

But of course indirects can also be real shady (slamming, churns, fraud, markup, markdown)

Posted by: ColorMeMeghan

Now where's the sticky for customer service reps?

Posted by: Ink Noise

Okay. Open question for anyone.

I'd really like to begin working for Cingular and there is a job opening in my city, however I would only be working at that location for three months and then I'll be going back to school (at which time, I would like to stick with the company and work at a corporate store in that city). I currently work at Best Buy (meh, over one year experience in retail in wireless communications) and know Cingular pretty much in and out with procedure (at least dealing with CNA people and pricing, policy, fees, ect), all the phones, and selling. Is it worth applying at this stage or should I continue my current slog at Best Buy and wait until I head to school? I believe all that I'd really need to know is CARE, or POS.COM or whatever the heck is the actual account handling system there.

Thanks for any input anyone can add here.

EDIT: And after a little more reading; here's hoping I'm not an ex-BB smurf as mulletwireless alludes to; thanks for the moronic blanket statement, buddy

Posted by: WirelessND

I guess retail is pretty intensive these days with all the quotas mentioned above. Retail businesses always look for sale talents but can never pay enough. All the talents move to selling cars or marketing .

Posted by: KKbundy420

How exactly does the quota work. I understand the top part. But in regards to actual amounts in dollars and cents? just a rough estimate how much is it usually. Im sure it will depend by market, but use your market as an example. Im trying to decide between here and T-MO. Do you guys make spiff on the phone itself, then another spiff on rate plan. And is the commision money garunteed. T-MO is not, if your not 100% to quota, you will not get 100% of your commision that you were supposed to get. Is it the same way, or you get whatever you sell no matter what. P.S. I understand that there will be deac's.

After taxes i usually bring home an average of $1,000 - $1,500 in commission (although I brought home $2,200 last month). This is commission only. And that's AFTER taxes. They tax you like 33% or something like that. Yes even if you don't make 100% of your quota you will still get 100% of what you made. Even if it's not 100% of the quota. No we do not get paid on phones. Should a customer buy a phone outright with no contract, you will not get paid anything.

Posted by: edmund

^correct, you get 100% of the commission regardless...and in my market they tax our commission at 42%...also you can hit a first and second pay tier above the normal commission scale and they will pay your more on each opp even the ones you have already sold.

Posted by: KKbundy420

as far as being termed for not hitting goal. is that three consecutive months? or three months in a work life-time.

Posted by: MrAlifEkin

three consecutive months

Posted by: KKbundy420

I also understand there are level tiers for your commision. (((in a few days that "your" could change to "us" if i accept the offer))))how does that work? The lady in the interview tried to explain it to me but we kind of got off topic with some other stuff.

Posted by: MrAlifEkin

Its exactly what it sounds like....After you've hit a certain percentage of your opportunities (120% of your opps is tier 2 and 140% is tier 3) all the opportunities that you've done since the first day of the month are now worth the tier 2 rate or tier 3 rate, respectively.

Posted by: KKbundy420

Well jiggle my jiglets!!! (no homo its just a jk) that sounds like a lot of money. how do you like working there is, quota a pain in the cheeks to the point where you have to hustle phone on the street corner at the end of the month? Or if your job is done correctly should quota be attained and more

Posted by: KKbundy420

or if your job is done correctly, is quota easy to attain?

Posted by: blessd24

They set the quotas so its challenging to get to. You normally cant just stand around and make it. At least not in my area. If you make or exceed your quota then it will likely go up. Gotta keep you on your toes ya know?

Posted by: Soopafly

Hmm... anyone remember that whole confidential part... LOL

i didn't know we actually had to stick to that

btw, in some markets you may make up to 60-70k a yr, i know this year im already at 32 as of june 30th

Posted by: dizzle247

i just spoke to a corp rep, and he informed me that only managers have access to the telegence billing system and the rest of the people have to use opus. If i'm coming from customer care, would i have access to telegence at all being just a corp rep?

Posted by: MrAlifEkin

im in the CARE market. According to my managers there are audits to see who is using CARE in the stores. First off, they took any links for CARE off the computers, and if you somehow managed to find the program through some link you weren't suppose to find then a red flag will be raised with your CUID on it...So ya, your stuck using our crappy POS system. You'll learn to hate OPUS everyday...more...and more....

Posted by: scepterr

Hey guys, i just got hired as a sales rep in a cingular corp store. I start on the 21st, i was wondering how commission works and how much you make from what. I used to work for footlocker and it was pretty simple, just made 2% from my total sales. Thanks in advance.

Posted by: brealmp3

did they not ask you if you had any questions for them?

Posted by: scepterr

Originally i was supposed to be a cust. service rep. But they changed their minds and made me a sales rep, so no i didnt have a chance to ask about comm.

Posted by: Hyghtz

Is the demo line for just instore while on the clock use, Or can you use it to talk to conduct business and maybe a personal call once in a while outside the store? Also how indepth are employee background checks? Will leaving a job without two weeks hurt you?

Posted by: rawrimblonde

I'm 20 and have experience in retail working at Abercrombie & Fitch for two years. I would love a job at Cingular but I'm not exactly sure they would find me qualified. I also do not see where else I could get that prior experience in wireless sales if not at Cingular ...

Posted by: sether

You can get experience selling wireless by working at an indirect. Best Buy is one of many indirect retailers of Cingular, but they don't pay commission so you won't get an idea of what the pay/stress is like working at a corporate store. Try working at RadioShack if you want to get paid commission for selling Cingular. They'll hire anyone.

Posted by: cingularmike55

I dont necessarily "get" the whole commision thing in my store. I mean, I understand wanting to challenge the reps to work that much harder for their money, but I dont understand to what extent and why they do it. Our "target" quota (and by quota I mean where it cuts off) was around 76, our "achievers" quota was around 98, and the "excellence" tier was anything above 98. Now, the "target" is around 97 this month !!! What is Cingular thinking?! Are there heads up there ***es? I just dont get it. I barely made excellence last month. It just sucks.
Im really rethinking this whole "Working for Cingular" thing, since Ill prolly be fired in four months for not hitting my quota anyways

Posted by: MrAlifEkin

if tier three is a cake walk to hit, then what more incentives are there once you hit it? They make the tiers difficult to achieve so you will sell more and try harder to hit a higher goal. Hence the reason why we're all commissioned. Commission makes you sell the way THEY want you to sell.

Posted by: cingularmike55

...well. thats all well and good. I still think its dumb for people to be "SAM"ed for not selling at a pace that the area you live in isnt even ready for.

Posted by: dizzle247

nobody answered my question.

SInce i am going from customer care, with access to telegence, will i be able to have access in a corp store when i moved to sales?

Posted by: Sprinter

you'll have access thru a backdoor of sorts, but cingular wants you to use opus for everything while calling your old buds for help when opus breaks (a lot)

Posted by: winda

Anyone have an idea of the salary range for managers in Fla?

Posted by: dizzle247

i think that's pointless that they'd make me call customer service for me to have something done when i can do it myself.

Posted by: KingJ2002

times have changed in terms of quota.

in the west la area where i work

60 apo

15.00 fpo

25 acts part time

50 full time

rate plan quota stays the same

also... pay went up to 12.20/hr

and hitting the third tier for full payout on features (since its opportunity based)
it's really based on hourly

work alot of overtime (90 opportunities PT / 120 opps full time)

work your normal hrs (65 opportunities PT / 90 full time)

nope. if they are giving you new dealer codes... no they wont. then again... i was told if you request a POS log in you can use it as a telegence log in as well. dont quote me on that because i havent tried.

But does your store meet that sort of traffic/demand? I mean, that may be a little less than our store if you scaled it down based on our traffic. Or it may be higher, in which case I do not envy you.

you get a COU which is unlimited everything for yourself.

you get two ERP plans for friends/family whatever. the plans are 1000 minutes and 500 minutes and you dont pay for anything unless you want to add features like texting, blackberry etc.

EDIT: that is if you are COR.

It's a reference to metroPCS. MetroPCS.com

Posted by: speedtec11s

Well we know its a reference to metroPCS, but it doesn't doesn't make any sense to any of us over here in the ghetto. Ignorance is our daily battle here.

Posted by: RoninChaos

MetroPCS has a trade in policy where you can trade in phones. It just so happens that a bunch of people who see metro doing it think that everybody else is doing it.

So here's my wild crazy journey through Cingular.

Started in June.

Trained till July 2nd week. Got BAAAAD NUMBERS FIRST MONTH!

Hit Third tier ever month since .

Basically the tiered system is geared so that every store's TOP REP will get a big payout to push the other reps.

The hardest thing about working for cingular is the interviews when you're hired.

Seriously, they do a pretty good job of screening people, so when you're in, you're in.

i start with cingular in a week it took 3week from the time i signed up online for the job

so what the best or a range of what the com pay is like for cingular ....i know my friend make over 4000.00 mo with hrly and com pay at verizonwireless lol

thank you from ............maui hawaii

Posted by: Infornography

I've seen people make that much and more here at cingular. Personally when I was working at Verizon I noticed that the hourly was smaller and the commision wasn't any better ( at least in the CA market ). So I left for Cingular. But what it all boils down to is DRIVE. I've seen part-timers in both companies make more than full-timers etc.

Posted by: ariez

what do the steps mean? also, what's the difference between CSR I and CSR II?

Posted by: Prometheus2k2

If you're good you get paid.

I made WAY over 5 last month. I don't want to go into details, suffice it to say, if you're good you get paid. I think the top reps are making like 90 a year, which is not bad at all.

Sorry, but I find that extremely hard to believe. The top rep in our region was making about 80k a year, but that's BEFORE taxes. after 45% tax, it's nowhere near that number. In regard to sales, it's quite deceiving to mention the amount pre-tax because we're taxed abnormally high compared to any other job/profession. In our region, pay starts at $9.63/hr. What are your metric numbers at? By the sound of it, you should be at the top of the Summit List.

Posted by: El Chino

when i worked for vzw i was averaging 7-8k in comission a month... Yes.. those old circuit city days

btw, don't they give you 2 lines? one demo and one Ptt? and what kind of phone do they give now a days for demo?

Posted by: riDuh7

If I ask a question here, will it get deleted?

Well, I still gotta ask this tho'. Will I still be considered even if I don't have any sales experiences? I mean I worked at a few restaurants for the past 5 years and still am working in one (a Japanese this time). I think I'm techy enough to work for a wireless company tho.... (I know sales got too little to do with techy-ness)

Can anyone answer me on this?

Posted by: suthurnlatino

The current phone is the LG cu500. I had only 7 months experience in sales and I got the job. Had an interview with 2 managers and got called 1-2 weeks later.

Posted by: rwilliams268

Would it be better to goto a Cingular store and put in an application or just do it online? I would like to work for Cingular, but don't what would be the best course of action. My next question is what would keep them from hiring someone?

Posted by: monstars02

Here is what people have to understand. If you have any kind of sense at all you will make $4000 per month easily. If you hit your quota you will get about $1000 depending on which market you are in. That does not count what you get paid for each actual line. Exp: Let's say you activate 75 lines and get paid an average of $10 per line that equals $750. So far with you quota plus pay per line you are at $1750. This does not count data which it the best way to make your money. Every rep knows that data will make you more money than anything. If you sell a blackberry unlimited data plan you can make 3 or 4 times the amount of actually activating the line.

The benefits as far as medical, 401k, pension, vacation, training, rewards points, tuition pay, clothing allowance and so on and so on are amazing. Also Cingular is a union company and it allows you protection for very, very, very little and awesome benefits as well.

You can come off the street with a HS Diploma and make more than people with 4 year degrees without breaking a sweat. Cingular is an awesome company to work for. No one will tell you any different. Sure people may complain about quotas but no one will say anything bad about the company for the most part.

Posted by: MrAlifEkin

I wonder if the post right above me is correct with the new commission structure...

Posted by: cingularmike55

I would say no way. Ive had around 80 opps in one month, low amount of features, and the quota is 100. That averaged out (with the bad features) to be around 1200 before taxes! That is nothing compaired to the rest of the year. So its highly doubtful that you would even clear 1700 depending on where you are in the area.

Posted by: Trakstar99

100 ops for a quota?! Here in the SNE market (Connecticut), I know the full-time quota is 80

Posted by: suthurnlatino

I filled out the application online but I don't think it matters. The first post really tells you what you need to know. They do behavioral questions to see what you've done in past work experiences. Be sure to explain yourself clearly and answering what they are looking for. Emphasize any accomplishments etc and say how YOU handled situations etc. It didn't matter for my case, but for most interviews I try to show up early.

Posted by: cingularmike55

And (YAY!!!!!!!!!) the quota is now up to 120 opps, with a "qualifier" of 50 activations in an area where people think text-messaging is something Satan did in the third testament. There are moments where I really hate working here. This month is just one of those moments, only stretched alot longer.

I've read this thread and understand that some people seem to have no trouble with quotas and other people do... it looks like it just depends on the area. Does anyone know what that's like in Eastern Virginia? How busy the stores are, in general, quotas, etc?

Also, what is the 401K? Online it says you can contribute up to 50%, but what is their match, and for how much that you put away do they match?

Thanks!

Expect to be questioned on past experiences. How did you handle a certain situation? Any success stories from past sales jobs, work ethics, and pretty much the same questions you hear at every interview. If you can prove you can sell, and you have a knack for talking with people then your in.

Hi, I have an interview with Cingular tomorrow. Is there anything else that comes to mind as tips for my interview tomorrow?

Posted by: MrAlifEkin

pretty self-explanatory....not sure what else you should do. It's just like any other common interview. I'm pretty sure it might vary from manager to manager.

Posted by: LUNDiS

my store is 100 ops, but 40 new...and in this area...nobody in this store has hit 40 new in over 6 months, and they havent changed it. nobody has hit it so they dont SPR any of us...but i just started about a month ago, and im on track to break it...i dont want to give away new activations because i dont want to have everyone else SPR'ed because im better than them or luckier than them... i hate that there is a seperate quota!!

*le sigh* no offense to new hires or people who applied, but the quality of sales reps has steadily gone down. this thread is the perfect example.

most of the questions asked HAS been answered by mralif, yet its still being asked. people(new hires), every place is a different quota. every store is a different quota. ASK the manager or regional (if you havent begun work, wait until you do to ask or you shouldve asked them prior).

Posted by: xebratongue

The original thread post pretty much sums it up. I love working for Cingular and have been hear for almost 2 1/2 years now. Although I wish our quotas were as easy as yours lol! We are in Western Michigan where it is a smaller but growing market. We are held to only 80 opportunities per month, 45 of them being new activations, but our other quotas include $16.00 per opp in feature revenue, $50 per opp in accessory revenue, 35% of $59.99+, and 2 ST&T Yahoo DSL sales per rep. We've gradually worked our way up to these quotas so it's not so bad. We are launching UMTS in our area in the 2nd quarter of this year so that has really helped to increase our features along with a large increase in the sale of Blackberries, Treo's and Windows Mobile phones.

someone said something about the quality of reps. lets see why. they decresed payouts on features, and now as of march first of 2007 they are making feature payout AT RISK. the tenured reps who have proven themselves, are simply being PAID LESS for the same work they've done for years. so the good reps leave. i just started in dec and im already pissed!

i know. thats why i left, took a small break and returned to work for t-mobile. much better on the pink side imo.

I am an indirect manager in the NY market

What do assistant managers make in the NY market in a Corporate store?

If anyone can let me know this that would be great. Thanks.

Do part time employees get health care benefits? Also, can they take their personal Cingular line and switch it to the personal use line plan after 90 days?

Posted by: CingyMacGuy

Do part time employees get health care benefits?
Yes.

Also, can they take their personal Cingular line and switch it to the personal use line plan after 90 days?
Yes, once it is out of contract. Cannot be switched to COU (Free, Unlimited Everything Line)

So if the current personal line is in contract it can't be put on the free unlimited plan?

Posted by: MrAlifEkin

That would be correct.

Insurance isn't cheap. I went from paying $43 biweekly at SEARS for a family plan to A LOT LOT more plus I had BlueCross BlueShield which I don't anymore.

Do part-time employees get vacation time?

Posted by: MrAlifEkin

yes part-timers get vacation time.

Posted by: MrDumbDumb

No, they don't get vacation time

Posted by: MrAlifEkin

When i started with the company over 3 years ago, i was issued PTO. I started as a part-timer. I wasn't able to use my vacation until 3 months into the job though. While working there two other part-timers were hired and they had their vacation days as well. I know this because one of them got married and used his PTO to go on his honeymoon.
So, yes part-time employees get vacation...

Posted by: Sikskillz84

Very good informative thread...

Posted by: deadwood

Yes, PT gets pro-rated amount of vacation according to hours worked.

Posted by: COWBOYS6975

Anyone working or has worked for a COR store in Texas? How is it ?

Posted by: freelight

I'm not clear on this, how much vacation time do part-timers get and how soon after employment can they use it?

I forget how much but when I first started (I started out as part time) I was able to use mine after 3 months. Not sure if this has changed.

When the store is haveing a slow day what do you do to kill time?

ROCCS (boy i'm glad I don't work there anymore)

1. Talk to your union rep. My store was not union so I did not have to pay any dues.

2.That's part of life in a commissioned career. I believe you get more back in your tax return though.

Well I found out I was hired today at a cingular store in a city named Frackville Pa, and I start my training on June 4th in Philidelphia Pa.

As an employee for cingular Is it better to use your business line for everything or the employee rate plan????

Posted by: Toothless Tommy

What to expect - rude angry dumb customers who feel Cingular is ripping them off ( probably is ? ) and also Head Office types who will never back you when you need them . Also a lowering of comm. structure every 3 months and other than that just lazy MGR's who work 33 hours a week and then are all tuckered out and HO types who hide out in their offices 5 days a week and never come to the stores - they have no idea who you are !

Posted by: moemoe26

I just got hired 2 days ago as an ASM i am coming from Verizon Wireless where i was a Sales Rep. What can i expect as an ASM from ATT. I was told i would choose my 2 demo phones which will be the cu500 and the Curve. If it helps i will be in the Washington D.C. Region

Why don't you all just wait and find out what to "expect"

does anyone know how i can add PTT to my COU line. i have a few friends with BB Pearls and i want to try it out. when i try to make a PTT call, the phone says to contact Cingular to add PTT service, but i dont see it as a feature on the COU website.

Hello all I'm new to the forum and also just got hired yesterday and took my drug test today. I have a question about the cou lines, I know that they are company owned lines but some dude that was at the interviews told me that I would have to get a credit check for the cou line, while another told me that the credit check would be only for the erp after 90 days. If anyone can clear this up for it would be much appreciated, cause lets just say my credit is not so good!!!LOL!! Thanks

Posted by: cingularmike55

That guy's smoking crack. 99% of the time, the Cingular Official Use line, or COU, is under the store manager or the stores name. It is not your phone, so therefore you do not need a credit check in order to recieve one. The Employee Rate Plan, or ERP lines, are however in your name, so they would require a credit check. Hope this helps, welcome to the forums, and welcome to at&t

Hey Thanks for the reply, its exactly what I was thinking.... And heres to being a part of the team!!! !!!LOL!!!

Pass a beer over this way too.

Got the offer call this past Friday, and I'm waiting for "the package" to come to my front door. Sending it FedEx, so it should be here tomorrow. Downside is that I have to wait until later this month JUST to go to training, and that's for the 2 week course! Sucks for me cause I can't stand the job I have now and I just wanna leave!

Good AM everyone in cell phone land! Congrats to all of the new hires and happy selling to all of the vets! I am new to the board and I have found the site to be very informative, insightful, yada yada yada. Yesterday I was offered a PT sales position and everything was good until the recruiter mentioned the average comm for a PT sales rep in the company is $6000-7000 a year Is this the norm??

Posted by: cellguy030

sounds like what i ws told. 12-13 k for full time. i saw the comp plan and if you can work it into the mulitpliers you can probably close to double that, but you have to kill it every month

i am starting training on the 20th of this month!!! anyways my question is...does att give raises?? since employees get started at different wages depending on experience can u get a raise the longer u work for them....btw i am starting at $10.97/hr

Posted by: smack4ud

Another thing that should be mentioned is the potential to get free accessories through the warranty program, its what's known as j'ing out. Its basically an asm or sm equipping the employees with the tools necessary to perform their job such as a car charger or bluetooth. Most of the time when I worked before the "new At&t" we have almost free reign over j'ing out and could pretty much have any acc. w/o asking a superior.

That's a great wage, IMO, for what AT&T normally starts at here, according to what I've been told.

is there anyone in the colorado market? Thinking about applying with a local store

I got hired by a store here in nyc! I should be starting Oct. 1st...Salary will most likely be between 14-15/ an hour as negotiated between me and the manager.

Posted by: 0688amw

Hi I'm considering applying for at&t and I would like to know if managers care if i have an unlocked cell phone and use at&t service. Is it something i can use for work or would that be a bad idea? I like to be different i hate it when other people have my phone lol

PS. Also do new employee receive a free cell phone ? If so what is it ? I think i remember reading this somewhere

Posted by: ThisisME101

Every employee gets a COU Line. Free phone and free service: Unlimited Voice, Unlimited Messaging, Unlimited Data, and the ability to purchase Ringtones/Games/Apps/etc. (Mine is capped at $50/month - i think)
This is for 'Business use' but I doubt they keep track of usage. The phone # is printed on your business cards, so customers can reach you directly. Thats what I mean by business use... Customer Interaction. As far as model goes, it all depends. Most of my coworkers have the Blackjack, I have the 8525, 2 people have the Pearl, and 2 have the Curve, and 1 Treo.

As far as unlocked phones, I guess it depends on your manager. I work with a guy who has like 5 unlocked phones that he alternates when he gets tired of his COU. All his unlocked phones are unbraded, so our manager doesnt really have a problem with it. I guess if he had 'T-Mobile ' all over them he might say something.

Well that is after my background and drug test. I know I am gonna pass these tests so now on to my question. Yes this is annoying I know. I read the sticky at the beginning of this post. Yet I would like more detail in terms of a union store is this the same across the board for union and non-union stores? Is this information still up to date? If I am a great rep in a very busy area is there a good possibility of making 40k a year? My starting is 21975 or 10.97 an hour for the bargained union position... What do you guys think ?

dude, I'm in a part-timer in a fairly busy store and I gross over 45k a year. so, yes it is very possible.

I start Monday, and in Nebraska/Iowa, they aren't doing the 2 week class. Full timers are getting real in-store training, then doing the PT course with the HR rep/trainer 1 day for 3 weeks. Was told today by my HR rep that it was because the hands on training has been working better, and I said "and it's cheaper, too." She just laughed.

I think I'm going to like it this way though. No 2 weeks in Minnesota, away from my family, plus I can learn everything right away. I learn better "hands-on" watching real world cases.

I just got hired(part-time) and I have a question about the COU. I was wondering since the new Tilt has came out will I get that? I was told that most people got the 8525 but that is the old tech. Although I could care less what I get. Im just happy I got a good *** job. It would be cool to have a tilt. Also, inorder to upgrade my COU do I have to wait a certain time or pay out of my pocket. Will I basically have the same phone forever? Im asking these questions because when my manager told me about my COU she made it seem like I could pick my joint.

BTW, I don't have any experience but i do have vast sales experience. Gave them fools at Circuit City 3 of my best years. The job was fun tho. I just used to rape people. I would MAKE them buy stuff A customer could walk in lookin to buy just one item and I'd tack on all kinds of stupid accessories and ALWAYS gotta get the bullcrap service plan. And dont let them refute my advances to buy extra stuff, I would just get another one my co-workers involved and we would badger the hell out of them until they buy it. Those were the days. I remember, working at FootLocker, I used to grab extra shoelaces for a customer and actually LACE them into their shoes, take out the original ones, and be like "gotta get the laces wit it dog!" Everybody would fall for it too. I think its human nature to say "no" so I just dont give em a chance

Posted by: blankette

My background just cleared and I start training a week from Monday. I've never been so excited for a new job in my life. It's been awhile since I've done sales and I want to be a Superstar! I've been behind a desk for the past year and a half and coming on to AT&T is a dream come true! I've read some of the negative posts on here and it kind of bummed me out considering I turned down another offer to take a chance on something different at AT&T. Does anybody here love their job? I need to hear from somebody who loves their job because I'm totally stoked about training and can't wait to start doing something proactive for my life that doesn't involve sitting in front of a computer 8 hours a day killing time until 5:00 pm.

Posted by: phonegeek2379

Here is the bottom line for working at COR. You need to hit the quota every month. You still get paid if you don't however you get written up if you do not. In some instances you may get quota relief however that willl not happen all the time. I worked at COR for over 3 years. Dedication to the company means nothing to them they need you to produce. I did not hit my quotas and was ultimatley terminated and so was one of my co-workers for him not hitting his quota. The company is great to work for if you can hit your numbers but if you can't then I would not waste time. Even if your store is slow you are still expected to hit them. The better you do the more you are expected to sell as in your quota will go up if you/your store is producing at higher levels. Working at COR has great benifits but again make sure you can hit your quotas as that is how you are judged. There are other things they judge you on however quotas are the main part of it.

Posted by: jett4406

i got called back on Friday and was offered a sales position. Naturally I accepted. It's exciting. I used to work at Verizon and even though I know they aren't the same I can't wait to get back to a corporate environment. I miss having a demo line too so that'll be sweet.

Posted by: JustJoe

I left "Old AT&T" just prior to the merger completion back in 2004 to move back home. When I left I was one of 2 Lead CS in the store (I did all of the back room work). I generally was on the lower end of my store's performance (hard to be on the floor when your manager doesn't know how to receive inventory, process paperwork, and well.... I don't speak spanish.)

Selling is easy stuff.. If you are always available there is always a customer... that was my problem before, I wasn't always available

Spent the past few years working with big boxes (literally, at Sam's Club) and I'm just fed up with where I'm living and the self-destructing store I'm at.

Pondering a return to a completely different AT&T in NYC. Any reps that have been around since Pre-Cingular offer any insight?

Posted by: krisguy

Done with part time training now, I start on the floor tomorrow.

I just got hired for a AT&T store in Baltimore, Maryland (apparently its a union) and I start my training nov. 19th. I understand that the average rep makes over $30,000/yr and honestly I'm sure I will make more b/c the store traffic seemed average when I interviewed and I consider myself to be a confident sales guy.

My main question is, what are my chances of moving up within the company and how long would these steps take. I do not imagine myself working as a regular sales rep. for any longer then 18 months. My main reason for working for AT&T is because I enjoy working with cell phones and I wanted to find a career that had to do with cell phones, so I figured working as a sales rep. is a good way to get my foot in the door for future goals.

Is my thinking correct? Are chances high for me to be a sales rep. for about 18 months or less and expect a promotion as long as I hit my quota's?

Any input will be helpful so please don't be shy to respond!

I was a sales rep for 3 years. My only promotion was going from a regular sales rep to the Data Sales Rep AKA Data SME (Subject Matter Expert). I didn't even get a pay raise, and I always hit my quota every month. If you're lucky you could try to get into an Assistant Store Manager position. But I wouldn't hold your breath. I know a guy who will be there for 10 years this December and he's been a Retail Sales Consultant the whole time. I'm sure you can do anything you want if the right opportunity opens up for you. I guess what I'm trying to say is, you never know. I guess it doesn't hurt to think optimistic. It works for some. I was optimistic for the first year until I realized I wasn't going anywhere. I finished college and got a degree and am much happier where I'm at now. Being a cellphone salesman may work for some as a career, but it definitely wasn't for me. Good luck. I hope you get promoted quickly. Anything is possible.

Give it 2-3 weeks. If you applied to 3 stores in the same district, its all one application.

I applied on 10/27. There were issues with that test, so it took a little while to resolve that but I got my offer on 11/9. Granted, I don't start until next month but that's my own design.

To answer this question, the company usually tries to saddle you with a current pda. Lately they dont ever do phones because phones are too easy to learn, but pdas arent. plus, pdas pay more anyways. so, youll prolly get a bbry or something similar

Um...no. There's a reason why I was motivated to finish college. Every March or April there is a commission cut (and you can't tell me it's any better this year than it was last year. In fact, I know it's worse), and every year cellphone reps make less and less (who here remembers when 80K/yr was normal?). Who knows how much longer until commission is cut entirely. So, keep telling yourself that a job as a cellphone salesman/woman has a secure future because, in fact, you and I both know that it doesn't.

Here's a good example:

http://howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1275432

But if a job where your commission gets lower and lower while your quotas increase and increase is your cup of tea, then by all means...

Isn't a iPhone considered a PDA? Would they let you get a iPhone?

You have to buy an iPhone yourself, with only a 10 percent discount. You can activate it as your COU.

Ok. So this is what I understand. They give me a free PDA to use on the COU line. Then on the side I can purchase a iPhone with 10% discount only and just pop in my COU sim card with no problem and still have unlimted everything, right?

Posted by: cingularmike55

yeah. The cou is for business use and to show customers how to use phones, but its basically free everything on that phone. Except they cap downloads (ringtones, games, etc) at a certain amount. Some people say around $50 a month. There is no real set dollar amount from what Ive seen.

First off, hooray for you and college...
Second, it may not be the case I stated for everyone. It isnt for me. But our sm, who was once a rep, didnt want to be promoted to sm or even asm because it would be around a 15k price drop a year as far as salary goes. Now, as far as comp goes, no duh its dropping. And yes, god knows it was great last year. the fact of the matter is this job is not my career. its just a mc-job until I decide where to go with my own life. But as for the folks that are at your precious college right now, chances are they dont own there own car, motorcycle, and house that they bought without mommy and daddy. So being a rep is fine for me.

My bad. I misread what you were saying. I thought you were talking about cellphone reps making more than other careers outside of the cellphone world.

If you mean to say that you'll make more as a sales consultant than you would as a store manager or ASM then, yes you are correct. When I worked there I made more than my ASM did, and I got a free blackberry for being the data SME

Depends on the college though too...

I also just wanted to point out that most of the people I went to school with have a family of their own. They WERE the moms and dads who bought their own house, motorcycles, cars, insurance, property taxes... So, let's not be so quick to judge now...

Not to mention those of us who are going to a University WHILE working for AT&T, AND paying for everything OURSELVES.

College isn't for everyone though. Take Bill Gates. And just because someone went to college doesn't always mean they'll end up making more than a senior employee. Then again, im in no way advocating not going to college. Education is always necessary.

This is a big misconception...people who don't go to college have something else going for them or are focused on something else (the successful people you hear of that is). If they didn't, they would be in college. It's not like they are not able to succeed in the educational system...college was not something that Bill Gates had his heart in, but the guy still went to Harvard for a bit...

They drop out because they had something else bigger going on...people seem to not understand that.

I need some reassurance. Does anyone know how strict AT&T is with their background checks. I did some resume adjusting to the dates that I was at former employers to fill in gaps. Was wondering if anyone else here did the same thing when they were hired. Got my official job offer and am nervous about this part

Posted by: LordALLTEL

I want to thank you all for this thread. I'm finishing up with Alltel this week and moving to Atlanta. AT&T is one of the carriers I'm looking at for employment when we get down there. Are there any folks in the Atlanta area with suggestions for that market?

Do they care if you use your COU line as your only line (so business and personal) and when you start can they port a number over for you to use from a different carrier?

I would love to use my Alltel number as my business line since everyone knows it....

Easy answer... NO. You cannot port a number into a COU nor can you port your COU to another carrier.. You can, however port your number in and out to an ERP line. Those are for personal use and you are eligible for that after 90 days...

As for using it as your only line, Im not sure how much they care. Managers do random audits of your usage, and if youre using it too much during the day, theyll pull it or you could get fired . But the majority of people I know use their cou for their only line (including myself) so Im going to say yes. Just dont use it too much during work hours unless its customers calling you.

Well guys, I have 3 interviews (or 1 with 3 managers) set up for tomorrow and im nervous as hell. I really don't have any documented sales experience but I have owned and operated my own business for the past 5 years which was 110% sales. I know the products well (from devices to plans) and I know I am overqualified. I stopped the online business because it was taking up way too much of my time (80+ hours every week) and not good for my health to keep sitting in a room with a dozen computers around me.

Been going to college for several years... I already completed two of my classes this semester of the 6 I am taking and my GPA is currently a 3.85/4.0... I really want to start a career with AT&T.

I have read this entire thread twice, some good stuff in here.

If anyone has any comments or suggestions I would be glad to hear them (reply or PM)

From what I hear there are tons of people who apply for these jobs and only a very small percentage get in (something like 4%?)

Posted by: vvti140

id make sure you talk to your professors to make sure you can miss your classes....ATT is pretty into their training, Monday-Friday 8am-5pm for 1-3 weeks depending. if you do nail the interview and they do set you up with training dates , your definitly going to have to miss some school.

Hey.

I'm about to move from a kiosk location to a full-fledged store. For those of you that have been in a COR storefront for a while, what do I have to look forward to? I know it's gonna be a bit of a culture shock, but I'd like a realistic POV...

Posted by: Crumbs

I've read this page all the way through...I'm curious as to how much the average income has changed with the changes to the commission structure. How much should you expect to make now as a Sales rep in a store right now? Also I'm hearing that alot of indirect agents are making alot more or should I say a considerable amount more than corporate employees, if anyone would be kind enough to shoot me a pm about these indirect agents I would greatly appreciate it.

Btw, I'm making the move from Customer service rep to Sales rep in the PA/OH area. Thanks

Posted by: Wonwad

If you are not selected for a position at a cor store after an interview, is there anyway to find out why?

Posted by: cingularmike55

You want advice for working within at&t!? Dont rely on the union for anything. Since Ive been working here (2 years at the end of this month) my union has been as worthless as a Pantech Duo. As our commission structure changes, the company is finding newer and more inventive ways to make the reps work more, but have them get paid less. So if any of you newbies are looking to get a job in the East PA area, then get ready to get very little for a large amount of work.

Posted by: cingularmike55

And be ready to sell features even if you dont get paid anything for them now, because if you sell a feature thats only 5 dollars above the previous package thats on that account, you only make 5 dollars! Sure your buddy at the other store didnt get charged back for it, but you didnt make anything!!! And on top of that, youre expected to ask customers to sign up for those large revenue packages while you yourself dont make anything from them. If youre higher up in the at&t foodchain, im sure youre loving these new packages, but those in the trenches are getting kicked constantly while youre down. At&t...man, you really want to work here!

Posted by: cingularmike55

Oh, it just gets better and better! I take a week off for vacation, and not only is my normal paycheck totally messed up, but there was no quota relief anymore, so I get written up for taking a vacation and not hitting my quota!!! Wow, at&t sure knows how to treat their employees!!!

Its going to be two years at the end of this month, and Im pretty sure thats where its going to end. Good grief.

If the comp had stayed the way it was last quarter, youd be looking at 45K+
But with the new structure...
...lower than that...

Oh, and most of the indirect agents in the area came to our store to make more money, and they look like this now Money flows to them more than it did before.

I am not sure if this has already been posted, but.. how are store managers compensated? I am sure this will very by market, but I am curious. If anyone has any insight into this, I am all ears.

They have a base salary and earn monthly commissions by their store's performance.

Posted by: nickelbagg

I assumed that. I currently manage a location for a carrier (not Att) and that is similair to how i am currently paid. I am curious as to what a first year manager with att makes in a year. I am interested in other possibilities, but dont want to jump ship to make less. Any detailed info on this would be great!! Thanks again for the help

Its pretty pathetic the verizon resorted to this.
A buddy of mine from the Pottstown store said that there was a truck with a Verizon Wireless "Unlimited Calling" billboard sitting on the back of it. The truck sat in the parking lot for around 40 minutes, with the driver sitting in the front seat and just sitting there waiting for...i dont know (probably confirmation to tell him to leave before the cops busted him for loitering).

I just thought that was funny.

Verizon has gone so downhill as far as customers compared to us. Boo hoo for them.

A 2nd interview is definetly a good sign. Grats on that
But ill tell you the same thing my "father-in-law" (who worked for the company before me) told me for my second interview: "Dont have a cocky attitude". It can happen that you dont mesh well with the other managers, and they can put their two cents in and then youll look like this But good luck nevertheless

I interviewed on the 4th and didn't get my call until the 19th(I start tomorrow). It just depends on amount of interviewees, how busy the manager/recruiter is, etc. So hopefully if you're going to get a call you'll get it soon. But, since I'm only speaking for myself it may take longer than the 2 weeks I experienced to get a call. But good luck!

Does trainning for part-timers vs full-timers vary from each other. Also, is trainning around 2 or 3 weeks long?

Posted by: cingularmike55

training normally takes 3 weeks for full timers. part timers only have to go 2 or 3 weekends for training. As far as varying, I think the part timers just get more of a crash-course, and full timers go more in depth

Mine was three weeks long, two in class and one in the store. I think observing for two weeks would be more useful training, the class is a waste of time.

Posted by: cingularmike55

WELL.....now at&t has blocked any and all sites that they deem are "bad". There goes anything I would go and do on my break.
