I was just wondering how well a motorola V3x would work on the cingular network. I understand that it doesnt support the 850MHz band but does cingular use that band as much as the 1900MHz band?

Thanks

You can check on wirelessadvisor. I'm lucky enough to live in an area where Cingular is pure 1900mhz, but most areas are 850 or a mix of 850 and 1900. A lot of the people that have the 850/1900 mix have reported problems when using a 1900mhz-only phone though. YMMV.

I just got the V3x and I have had no problems using it on Cingular thus far. High recomendations.

You will lose coverage with a non-850 phone. How much depends on where you live. I don't think there are any areas, except for the Carolinas, where Cingular doesn't have 850 in a region. CA/NV used to be 1900-only, but that isn't true anymore. Ditto for NYC.

www.wirelessadvisor.com is a good resource, but be aware that it only tells you the bands a carrier is licensed to use in an area, not what bands they are using, nor how well they're built out.

My advice would be to only get a phone with 850. Even if a 1900-only phone works where you are right now, sooner or later, you'll travel to an area where you need it.

Why would you want a phone that may work fine near you, but not at all elsewhere. Seems like you might as well get one that supports 850 since you very well may need it if you were to travel. Otherwise, it seems you are buying a crippled phone.

Try a search on the phone or the 1900/850 topic and you will have your answer. In short, don't get it. The search will give you the long answer.

my dealer tried to sell me this crap and thought that he could get away by saying its a quadband...was selling it for 200 bucks after renewing the contract for 1 year...

I REALLY wanted to get the V3x, but I travel alot around the US and I would be very p!ssed off if I would get no signal wherever I'm staying. So I went with the V3i. No way will I get a tri-band phone while im on cingular.
