Thanks in advance!

First convert an MP3 to WAV format (using JetAudio, for example), then convert WAV to MMF format, using Yamaha Wave Sound Decorator. Both programs are available as free downloads. Remember that the MMF's maximum size is 300KB (about 30 seconds).

I bought my Momax in Hong Kong in a store. www.umobileco.com stocks spares.

Thank you very much for the info!!

They have only costly OEM batteries at the moment, but I'll check to see if they'll have some (hopefully) cheaper Momax in stock in the future.

Posted by: kobayashiwoof

does anyone know any websites that have applications and games for this fone?

I just found out about the site umobileco. Damn why are they so expensive? All their phones are twice more expensive than what they cost brand new here...

How is the mp3 player on this phone? (bass..quality..etc..) Because im debating if its worth it to go out and buy a memory card for the mp3...thanks

Posted by: yangj08

This phone has equalizer presets in its MP3 player, and virtual surround. It's pretty good, and I'd recommend buying a memory card to use it as an MP3 player.

Posted by: hao-bao

could we have a screenshot of the mp3 player? Kind kind kind

Gosh it just looks like the one from 803T.. It never evolves??

Posted by: AL9999

The interface of 3G Toshiba phones stayed largely the same from the 902T/TS921 to the 904T. Only with the recent release of the 910T etc did it really change.

Ive been trying to use the link to get some ringtones but i seem to be doing something wrong. How can i transfer them to my phone i tried putting them straight on the memory card but it doesnt show up. Please help thank you.

Posted by: MrRoute66

With the Softbank acquisition of Vodafone KK has anyone seen any instructions for converting the 904T for Softbank Mobile? As the phone has specific settings to vodafone (and no apparent redirecting address) it would seem the phone is ripe for a firmware update.

Still trying to get the GPS to be able to MMS out its coordinates on a WAP-link that provides map to its recipient....

<mem-card>\PRIVATE\VODAFONE\My Items\Sounds & Ringtones

Awesome it worked like a charm thanks alot!!

Glad it worked

I uploaded some ringers here:

Cool ringtones are great stuff

Posted by: yangj08

Just wondering, in the Media Player there is a section called "My Sounds". WHat goes into that?

Posted by: Junglizt1210

hmm... i have no idea... ive never really even touched it, until you mentioned it. i really don't have a clue. I'm wondering if it's for recordings or something.

Posted by: SNC904T

I have a few new questions about this phone. I was wondering if anyone has found a way to unlock it so that you dont have to use beat engine to put mp3s on the phone.
I was also wondering why there was a beat engine on the phone. When i try to use it it always says update failed. does anyone know what its for? Thanks in advance!

Posted by: yangj08

The key to being freed from having to use Beat Engine is to figure out what format goes into the "My Sounds" section so that we can use that instead of Beat Engine.

Posted by: trancedazn

wow nice review, and the toshiba looks pretty damn nice. just wondering, how does the mmf sound on the 904t, is it pretty loud and clear? also for video were you able to convert some and watch full screen, and hows the video recording on it?

Is their a way to answer calls by fliping the phone open, instead of opening it and pressing the button?

Posted by: MrRoute66

Found a good Java program that attempts to connect Google's maps to a GPS. With the internal GPS in the 904T it is my hope to get the two to talk - so far no luck with the 1.30.06 version. Still progress to get this phone to do LBS.

I haven't tried it (I prefer pushing the "answer" button), but it should be:

Settings --> Call Settings --> Common Settings --> Open to Answer --> ON

Thanks for the heads-up!

I am eagerly waiting for Navigon's mobile java navigation software... Hopefully it will talk with 904T's GPS receiver....

Does the feliCa works?

Posted by: dude@work

Doesn't work in canada.

Btw, I have an unlocked silver 904T for sale. mint condition. Anyone in toronto interested message me.

Posted by: Junglizt1210

FeliCa is supposed to work in Japan only. I know Singapore has a similar system, but I'm not sure if they are compatible. I know Hong Kong and London use older/non-standardised standards thus incompatible.

Aww, I was so hoping that I could tap the phone on the faregate and then someone would report me to the police for "suspicious behaviour" only to find out that......

I placed the phone on a PaSoRi card reader and then tried to access ezlink(card used in sing)online(place they let you find out the past 20 transactions and topup the card) but the system couldn't find a standard ticket in the phone..... maybe if the standard ticket or whatever the equivalent it is in your country can be downloaded or placed into the phone feliCa, our phone can work as a transit card?

Posted by: yangj08

That's how FeliCa works- you have to download the IC-appli corresponding to the card you want to use (Edy/Suica/whatever). If someone can make an IC-appli for EZlink then you could download it to your phone and that would be the "standard ticket". EZlink actually does use the FeliCa system- for whatever reason, they just choose not to release an IC-appli for EZlink. The Octopus card in HK is also on the FeliCa system, and a couple of other Asian countries are in too. I don't understand, though- the FeliCa phones could easily be released in HK with the selling point of being to carry your Octopus card in your phone, but Smartone doesn't. I wonder why...

Posted by: asmok

Because it's too expensive to write a program that only a few people will use in HK. Not to mention Felica in Japan is in the 2nd/3rd generation whereas HK is still in the 1st generation. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Posted by: Junglizt1210

I always thought that the Octopus system in HK was an older version before they standardised it... thus the Japanese stuff is newer.

I wonder if Softbank would have any foreign IC appli for us to download... were we using Softbank

Posted by: yangj08

I'd think, though, that if Smartone-Vodafone sold the 904SH or the 904T with FeliCa in HK that they'd try to push it as a selling point- thus it wouldn't be "only a few people" using the service. It'd be nice, though, if something were released that allowed people to write IC-appli for their own FeliCa system- we wouldn't have to wait on the foreign carriers to do such a thing then.

Posted by: AL9999

Yeah but it requires a fair bit of effort to introduce such a far-reaching service such as FeliCa. They'd need to get the support of all the infrastructure services that use it (banks, credit services, convenience stores, department stores, transportation, etc) and I don't think the Octopus system would be enough to warrant its introduction.

Posted by: asmok

I think one of the other reasons they didn’t write ic-app for felica is probably security related. Once the ic-app is available for download, people will start to hack it just like all the other Vodafone/Softbank phones.

Posted by: Junglizt1210

Quote:

that's actually a good point, one i never thought about, because people will hack it so they can load free money onto it

Posted by: AL9999

Huh? Don't you think the Japanese would attempt to hack it as much as the Chinese in Hong Kong might? If it was so hackable it would already have been exploited last year in Japan, with so called 'free money' loaded on. If it had, I would have heard about it.

Come on, I don't think the security of the ic-appli is the problem here.

Posted by: 2SHY

According to Wiki, Felica creates dynamic generated codes so that is not hackable.

Posted by: asmok

Even without security problem, Smartone needs to investment significant amount in infrastructure and integration, and I doubt Smartone will do it alone when they are still promoting the 3G network.

Thats probably the reason. They want to establish 3G first then maybbe Felica.

But yes infrastructure costs are the reason.

Does anyone kno why my toshiba 904t doesnt charge anymore... even when i plug it to the pc theres no connection.... ive ordered a separate battery charger desktop and waiting for it atm. i think its could be the phone itself.... has anyone had this problem yet???

Posted by: hao-bao

If you already tried to fix the pc side and soft/hard reset the phone, It obviously mean the phone's plug is broken.

Posted by: asmok

If all else fails, just get a desktop charger.

Posted by: yangj08

Just to note- I've figured out what goes into the "My Sounds" section of the Media Player. You put in 3GP files with sound encoded in AMR format. If you can't make Beat Engine work you can load songs into the "Sounds and Ringtones" folder after using an encoder to re-encode your songs in AMR format and using the .3gp extension. Of course, it sounds like an AM radio on a bad day, so only do this if you're desperate.

Posted by: electric

Since some people is asking about the "Retrieval NW Information", here's how you can get rid of it.

To do this, go to

menu=>settings=>memory settings=>phone memory=>clear memory

It should solve the problem....but if i remember correctly, u have to re-enter all of your network settings if i am not wrong.

Posted by: yangj08

Yes, because that's like a master reset. Oh- a question- is there a way to make higher-quality AMR files?

don't quite understand what u mean. "higher-quality AMR files" = in terms of bit rate as in mp3 files?

Posted by: yangj08

Yes, in terms of bit rate. I can only seem to be able to do 12kbps at 8khz sampling rate which sounds like crap. I'm doing this because for some reason or other Beat Engine won't recognize my memory card ever since I stuck it into a A5506T phone to play with. I want it to sound like normal MP3/AAC though because right now it sounds like an old tape player but with such a low bitrate it won't happen. Are there any converters for this format?

well, maybe u can try to re-format ur memory card with ur Toshiba phone. but u lose all the files in ur memory card.

Thinking of picking one up but having a hell of a hard time finding a site that still carries them.

Be careful: the 904T is still on sale, but now it's branded for SoftBank, and the new firmware is not yet unlockable. Be sure to buy a Vodafone model (unless you use a SoftBank SIM, of course... ).

Thanks. It worked. I do suppose that I'll have to have a separate miniSD card for fooling around with my AU phones, though; they don't make phone calls or anything, but they're cheap enough so that I can lend them out as cameras without worrying about losing them (1.3MP is enough for 4x6 prints and the A5506T only cost me $7) or I can take it out somewhere more *out there* and not worry about breaking it.

The digital zoom, now that I think about it (i rarely use it anyway)... is rubbish. honestly. Get a 903SH if you want SERIOUS picture taking. I'll still recommend the 904T if you want a phone newer than a 902SH that can take pictures that aren't as god as the 903SH and doesn't cost as much.....

Also.... There *ARE* Vodafone branded 904T that can't be unlocked. June 2006 onwards i *think* are the dodgy dates. Mine's March 2006 and it's ok.

First convert the MP3 to a WAV file (using whichever program you happen to have: Jet Audio is a free one, for example).

Then use Yamaha Wave Sound Decorator to convert the WAV to SMAF format (usable as ringtone).

The SMAF file (extension *.MMF) can't be bigger than 300 KB.

How do I convert MP3 to 3gp ringtones for 904T ?
Can 904T set the 3gp videos inside the phone as ringtone ?

Posted by: asmok

You can use 3gp converting tools such as ImToo 3GP video converter, but it's not free.

You can set 3gp video as ringtone/incoming call video, but the 3gp quality is worst then mmf.

Yo Orlok , i tried to convert mp3 to wav by using jetaudio, its ok, after that i use YWSD to convert my wave file to Smaf file, everything is ok too, but the problem is i cant search any program that can play the smaf file was converted

After searching around, i found this program PsmPlayer v3.80e , but its cant play my Smaf file too @.@ , and so that, i dont know my Smaf file is really work or not

Btw, if my Smaf file is okey , where do i have to put (folder) smaf file on my memory card for my 904T to use it ?

Thanks

Hi!

With Yamaha Wave Sound Decorator you can crop and edit the WAV files before converting them to MMF, and then you can listen to them using that same program (there's a little "PLAY" icon the taskbar).

100% of the MMF files I've created with YWSD are OK for 904T. Just remember they must be under 300 Kb to be used as ringtones (this usually requires you to use YWSD to crop the files to a maximum of 50 seconds and resample them to 22050 or 16000 Hz and mono sound).

Put the files in "E(or whichever drive letter your SD card uses):\PRIVATE\VODAFONE\My Items\Sounds & Ringtones" and you're done!

If you send the files to the phone using bluetooth (and I think infrared too), then the MMF files will automatically be placed in the ringtones folder.

Thanks much for your detail help budy, everything is okay for me now

Btw, is there anyway to make the ringtone file bigger ? Because 300Kb and cropping is not good for my ring ^^

Posted by: asmok

300kb is the set limit for all the jap phones. Can't do much about the size limit. You can reduce the quality to MA-5 which should give you a few more secs in the mmf.

According to the official Toshiba/Vodafone brochure, 904T built-in internal memory is approximate 40MB.

Anyone got MMS working properly on this phone?

Posted by: asmok

You can only send MMS, can't receive.

Posted by: kobayashiwoof

that's like normal in Japanese phones or something, its a common bug. it cannot be fixed.

I have met on a forum a guy who says to be able to receive MMS's with a 904T...

Even if we use the same carrier (Vodafone Italy), I still can't receive anything...

I'm trying to figure out which differences in settings we have, to see if there's any chance to solve this problem...

Another guy, with a different carrier (Telecom Italy) says he can't receive MMS's, but if someone sends him an MMS he'll receive an SMS telling him to go to a WAP address and look up the MMS (the same thing happened to me when someone tried to send me an MMS but I had not yet activated the MMS service).

I'll post here any useful info I can get my hands on......

anybody know if the 904T is capable of using the 4gb mini SD cards?

Sorry, I couldn't get an answer (and obviously a solution for the problem either)... He simply says that our settings are identical, but that he can receive MMS's...

Now I'm wondering if it's something in the unlocking process that causes these troubles, or if he was just making fun of me...

Hi guys, just wondering is it possible that feb 2006 904T can't be unlocked? I purchased one from Timsta but I can't use any sim cards at all (major provider in australia and indonesia). It says "usim error". Is there any solutions for that? Thanks

no, not true! my 904T is manufactured in february 2006 whereby there is no problem at all. only those made after june 2006 cannot be unlocked. there could also be a possibility that your 904T is not yet unlocked.

btw what sim card are u using? a 2G or 3G sim?

Posted by: byakuugan

As I bought it unlocked, it's quite a surprise and I still can't contact the seller so it's bit frustrating. Timsta told me that swap the 3G card with 2G card will do it but I tried 2G and 3G simcards but still no luck at all. Is there any chance that using 3G card will not work? Thanks again.

i'm using 3G sim card with my made in february 2006 Toshiba 904T. everything works fine!
btw, how sure are u that your 904T is unlocked when u bought it?

Thanks guys for the blocking informations.

Btw, do i have any method to transfer my music from my 904T's beat engine box ?

My GF asked me transfer some mp3 file to her n73 Nokia fone, but i cant find any mp3 in my 904T to do that . So, is there a way ?

I'm sorry, but I think it's impossibe. When you use the Beat Engine Box to transfer MP3's from your PC to your 904T, the BEB converts them to another format, and I don't think that phones other than Toshiba ones can read that format.

2G and 3G sim cards both work fine in my phone. Make sure your phone is unlocked.

That's what I think too. Since, I bought from Timsta (umobileco) I was sure it was unlocked and it is problem at my end. Then after I tried various sim cards I began to suspect that it's not unlocked. I'll try to find a guy to unlock this then, thanks alot guys

That phone in your sig- what Sharp phone is it (and was it ever released outside Japan in a GSM form)?

Posted by: AL9999

It's a J-SH04, Sharp's first camera phone. It was released well before Sharp started releasing phones in Europe; about the closest thing you can get to one of these is the GX1, if you can find one somewhere.

bingo...you're right, it's a sharp J-SH04!!!

I use Replay Converter, but settings shouldn't be too different. Try keeping the vid to QVGA resolution (320x240) and to 15 frames per second. I never had problems with videos created using these settings.

Those are the same settings I used but for what ever reason the phone still giving an error saying that file cant be played.

Does anyone know if Visto's email service can be utilized on the phone in the US (with Cingular)? Visto cites Cingular as carrier customer and the 904T as an enabled phone.
I can see the Mail Server under messaging though it doesn't connect; Cingular suggests the phone should have an icon for its enabled phones. I have their PDA Unlimited data and Cingular says this includes email.

http://www.visto.com/products/how_to_buyb.asp

http://www.visto.com/products/devices.asp
(listed under Softbank Mobile)

I currently access email via POP3 but Visto is a push solution.

904T is listed under Vodafone brand too.

Maybe I'm missing something, but you access email via POP3 with your 904T? How is it possible?

Do you use a Java application? Which one?

I'm sorry, but I'm no help to you... I never heard of Visto... But I surely hope you can help me.

Maybe you can try changing the program you use to convert files. There should be a free one by Nokia.

Posted by: AL9999

I'd venture a guess that Visto's push mail solution is used by Toshiba in the 904T (and possibly other Toshiba Softbank phones) to work with Softbank's MMS system, effectively enabling push email.

OR will I be able to download a different browser in to the phone? I have all the settings i need because my MMS and SMS works fine. I just cannot browse the internet. any ideas?

Hi!

The Vodafone Live softkey on the standby screen won't work because it's hardwired to the Japanese portal and needs Vodafone Japan settings.

But you should be able to use the integrated browser: Menu -> Vodafone Live -> Enter URL.

If everything works fine, I suggest you to download Opera Mini: point the integrated browser to http://mini.opera.com/ and click on Download Opera Mini.

BTW: when you say "my MMS work fine", do you mean you can receive MMS's? Or can you only send them?

Hi. Does anyone know a good place in Tokyo or Yokohama city where I can get this phone unlocked? A place that hasn't been raided by the police yet?
A physical address, phone number, or a website link would be great!

Hello from Spain.
Tryin to do gps work i have installed mobile gmaps and i can see maps and move on its, but the gps can't give the location.
When i click on the security settings for the software, appears the option of gps use in grey, and i can't enable it.
I can't obtain a location with the navi software of the phone too, as some of you have told to do.
What's the problem?, because i can download games, use opera browser, etc.
If i change to vodafone spanish service, i will find any change on this?
THANK YOU and excuse my bad english.

Posted by: blue_days

I tried it too...no luck with mine. BTW, your english is fine!

I guess that its either the GPS hardware is not compatible with the program, or the GPS hardware is programmed to only receive input from Vodafone/Softbank Servers in Japan. I think the GPS program is configured the same way.

Hey all!

First let me thank everyone for the awesome info in this thread, a SUPER big help to the new 904t in my life!

Question - does the media player have the ability to be turned off? I played a file after i got one on, and now it is constantly showing the media player icon instead of the SD one.

Normal?

Thanks for your response!

TPK

Posted by: kobayashiwoof

when that happens to me, i just go back into the media player and press the "end call" button to exit

When you're in the standby screen (you just see the wallpaper, and the mediaplayer icon instead of the SD one), press the End/Power Key (the one you use to end calls and turn off/on the phone). It will ask you if you want to end the background play, select "yes" and you're done.

GPS works just fine for me. But, you have to use the option to send your location in a MMS and get the coordinates from the MMS that is created. Then you use the coordinates in your mapping program.

The reason the second guy recieves SMS telling him to go to a WAP address is purely to do with the carrier and the fact that he doesn't normally have MMS service enabled on his SIM card - nothing to do with the phone.

That was my thought too, but when I asked him, he said he had the MMS service enabled, and that e coul send MMS's (but instead of receiving MMS he received SMS with a WAP address)!!!

Anyway, I found the solutions for all the problems of 904T's japanese firmware: I sold the phone and bought a Shap 903 with Euro firmware....

Is there not an email client on this phone? or is there another way to email without using a browser? I learned that I can't even send a sms/mms to Japan from the United States. So I'd like to atleast email from the phone. The whole reason I got this phone was that I thought I could send/receive mail in japanese. If i can't even do that, there's no point to this damn phone.

Posted by: mike95s14

where is 電子メール??!?!?! omg, i thought all japanese phones can do 電子メール!!!

Posted by: AL9999

Calm down Japanese firmware phones made by Sharp or Toshiba don't have POP/IMAP email clients. They send email using a modified form of the MMS protocol that all networks other than Softbank's aren't compatible with. About all these phones can do in terms of Japanese messaging is SMS; if you can't even do that then as you say, there's no point to owning the phone.

It's the sad reality of the situation I'm afraid.

Surely you can send/recieve SMS.... MMS is the problematic one... where u can send but not recieve. That *should* mean you can send to someone in Japan if they're on the Softbank network but you won't be able to recieve. They can recieve as they are using Softbank.

So far the best thing I could come up with is download and use the gmail client. Fortunately gmail recognizes japanese input and output. I configured gmail to send a copy to my american yahoo address. you can set yahoo to send an alert to your phone. it's quite nice actually, yahoo alerts within the minute. and google sends to copy instantly. the gmail client is not bad at all, just can't attach files

Hi guys,
I'm a Toshi 904T noob, so please spare me for my question.

Here it goes:
I got the java game website - but when I download it through my windows(pc) - the .JAD filesize were 1 kb. should I use the 904t brower instead ?

And another thing is when I got a MPEG4 movie from a friend through bluetooth, I couldn't watch it? should I convert it to other extention ?

Regards,

Grummy

I'd like to know more about getting jar games to work too. Specifically, vnes.jar. I tried to download it from my website, but instead it tries to open it through the vodafone browswer as well as the opera mini browser. I used JADMaker to create a jad file for it, and I put that on my website as well, but when i click on the link through vodafone browser, it just opens that file and only outputs text. I tried putting both the jar and jad file in my phone's memory using usb data transfer, but when I go to "other files" directory in the phone, I can't execute it. I can only view their "detail" information. I downloaded "jad" games from another site on to this phone before, I don't see what I'm doing wrong here.

Gmail can be configured to send SMS alerts as well. IMHO, the alerts from Gmail are better than Yahoo for a few reasons. From what I have seen, Yahoo alerts sometimes will not show up on time, anywhere from 1 minute after the mail arrives, 30 minutes, 2 days, or never. Since February, I have had 4 serious outages that have lasted days. I managed to PO Yahoo support complaining about it, but the best thing I could do was send a complaint to Mail Alerts Help using a form (I bookmarked it since it happens so much) and fire off another complaint when it happens. From my usage of gmail (admittedly not as long) it doesn't seem to have the same issues. Worked fine when I was in Japan too.

The other issue, just a minor one is that the alert allows 100 characters to be sent from Yahoo, basically Yahoo alert title, reply to address then the remaining is your message. It leaves little room for previewing the mail. For Gmail, the title is much shorter so if your mail is in english or roma-ji, you can read the entire message usually. Japanese mails for both will show up as moji-bake (i am using cingular).

I am using an old 3rd party app (possibility a precursor to Gmail), and Gmail's mobile app to send mail to Japan. I love the Gmail app, but it cannot be sent to all carriers. My friends on Softbank can receive my gmail just fine, and I can read theirs fine on the gmail app. However, my GF on KDDI's au network cannot receive gmail mails to her phone. Yahoo works fine, but gmail will not work. I am hoping that with Google's country wide adoption that it will work soon, but I saw on many japanese blog sites how gmail was prevented from being sent to au phones. Anyway, I am still stuck with sending yahoo mail to her, and gmail to my friends.

I am hoping for a better solution with the iPhone advent that with the push IMAP from Yahoo (maybe google tooo???) and OSX.

Thanks for the infos. I'm glad to hear from someone in the same situation as me. I have some friends and a girlfriend in Japan, and it has always been a pain to communicate with them through a phone. Hmm, I have checked all over google's site, and even the gmail account settings... but I can't find anything about a SMS alert from gmail.... Could you explain that in more detail? If yahoo's sms alert is unreliable, I'd really like to switch to google's...

Yeah, I am in the same position I think. Hope this explanation helps for your situation.

For gmail alerts, go into the "Settings" tab (easy link next to your email address in the upper right corner of your gmail page).

Then click on "Filters", and create a new filter. Enter the criteria you want to filter for (for example, your GF's exact email address), then click "Next Step".

Then check the box that says "forward" and put the email address you want to forward to. For the SMS alert input your phone's email address (check on HOFO, or with your carrier for your sms email address format. Usually its something like [10-digit mobile nubmer]@[carrier domain info]).

Its technically not an SMS alert like Yahoo's but it works the same. My thinking that it is more reliable.

Note that on this page you can also "Star" and "Label into" different categories. It works well with the mobile gmail app as well. That way you can separate your Japanese emails from the other ones with some creative filtering, starring and such. And of course, you get the mail notification too..

Good luck!

Is there a way to run JAVA apps in the background, so that other functions of the phone can be used at the same time? I'm thinking about a JAVA eMail client. Any chance? Or does JAVA apps have to be closed everytime you wanna switch to another function?

Sorry if that question has already been answered, but I don't have time to read all 23 pages of this thread. (^ ^;

Posted by: yangj08

Java apps can be put on hold while you do other things, but they certainly aren't running while in the background. So it can't, say, download your e-mail for you while you use the media player.

Posted by: squeenix

Sorry if this may be a stupid question, but it also won't retrieve eMails if I'm using a push eMail client?

Posted by: yangj08

Push e-mail? I don't think the 904T supports that.

Posted by: squeenix

Ya, it doesn't, that's why I'm talking about a Java client which can do that. For example Morange or Consilient.

Does the GPS function work? Or is it locked to Japan.

http://www.fonebiz.co.uk/2006/10/06...phone/#more-348

Posted by: yangj08

The GPS works outside of Japan, but the mapping function only works outside of Japan with a Softbank service contract. My phone will give me lat/long readings, which I then type into a Google Earth java app I keep in my phone (it won't talk to the built-in GPS- so annoying).

how long does it take to get lat/long readings?

Posted by: yangj08

Approx. 2-5 minutes in China. Sometimes it doesn't work, though. I think GPS needs line of sight, so depends on your location.

Posted by: Larrikin

I've never been able to even get Lat/Lon with my 904t

Posted by: yangj08

Use "Current Position" instead of "Locate Me" (if you are, then something's getting in the way of good GPS signal).

Posted by: AL9999

GPS usually does need line of sight (it definitely needs it when getting a signal for the first time since turning on the device), although I find our GPS Navman can occasionally get signal through my house's roof when I'm on the second (top) floor.

Guys, im having problem with internet surfing using my 904 T.

Im trying to enter this site www.ogame.org and others sites of course, i always have this message : the site cannot be display because of size limitation.

Im trying messing up with browser setting and internet setting but cant do, even i try to set up font size to extra small and hide all the picture but still cant login those sites.

My GF's Nokia N73 still log them fine, somebody tell me a resolution ?

Does anyone have experiences with the Softbank 904t? Are there, except the hardware branding and the Y! Keitai browser, any differences between the old Vodafone and the new Softbank version? Can an unlocked Softbank 904t be used just as same as the Vodafone 904t?

Posted by: yangj08

The Softbank 904T can't be unlocked. You have to have one from before June 2006- all the ones made after that can't be unlocked.

Posted by: squeenix

Then that means, this auction is a fake?

there were reports on hardwarezone that the softbank branded ones can be unlocked, some guy says his supplier had them and there were some pics showing it, not sure but I can find the thread for you

Posted by: aw614

That's something I'd like to see- but does GPRS work? I've heard that Softbank now locks down all the data settings so that data only works on Softbank.

here is the thread

is there a master reset for this phone?? mine just has this white screen saying DBL_ERR... i'm thinking of getting it reflashed....

I got my 904T today, and I'm having a small problem.
The standard PIN "9999" is not working, but I need it for formatting my memory card and so on. Is there a way to reset it? Or is my only chance to contact the former owner?

Posted by: Dan008

Anyone got Vodafone original ring tones?

No way to reset it (maybe there is, a la DoCoMo, but you'd need to bring it to a Softbank shop with an active account and proof that you're the owner of the phone- I don't think so) so your best chance is to contact the former owner.

The videos I recorded on my phone dont transfer to my computer properly. I actually am able to transfer the files but I can only see 3 seconds of the video I transfered over. Any one know how I can resolve this?

Posted by: aw614

i haven't been able to figure that out, as I have been having the same issue on my 904t. Media player classic can play it in its entirely, but everything else does not

When I open it with real player, it seems to be fine too. However, if I use VLC media player, I only get 3 seconds

Posted by: yangj08

Try Quicktime.

Hi all,
does anyone know where i might be able to get a usb cable for my toshi 903t? if anyone has one they'd be willing to sell, please let me know.

also, i still can't get rid of that 'settings information downloaded from Network. Start retrieval NW information?' annoying box that pops up whenever i open the main menu or the messaging menu. any suggestions other than temporarily inserting an alternate sim card?

is there a website with general settings for GPRS? my phone company's settings they've given me don't seem to work with this phone at all, haven't been able to get wap working at all.
thanks!

Posted by: aw614

ebay for data cable, sharp data cable is the same.

and you need another sim card, start it up, then turn off and change sim card it works. or you can master reset.

grps, I do not know, for fido,

Guys i'm loving my 904T but hte ral problem tha is bugging me is the phonebook entries. can someone please help me with this? i can't put them in alphabetical order and you have to scroll manually in order to reach the one you want to text. please guys i really need help. by the way i'm a new member. Please help me in detail about how to alphabetize them, and with this "by reading order thing"! thanks so much guys! really confused right now. Your help will be very much appreciated!

Posted by: sean-o-saurus

Thanks for the review.

I got everything working and then some by reading through.

I think most people overlook assigning the phone your actual phone number under my details in order to get Beat Engine to work.

I've read the majority of this thread now but i still can't really find a solid answer to my questions...
I'm currently on Vodafone AU and I'm looking into a phone that can use the internet and was wondering if, using the right settings, would this phone be able to connect to the internet? Also, does MMS messages work? I keep reading yes and no on the subject so I'm a bit confused... thx guys

Posted by: Larrikin

Internet works fine but I think MMS receiving only works on Vodafone JP. I was using the phone on TMobile and I could send MMS but couldn't receive.

ohh ok cool, thx
just got a few other Q's though,

How's video playback that you convert yourself from your computer? Is it choppy because I've been looking at some other mobiles and they've been really choppy and slow which is sort of useless... :P

Also, I was wondering with SMS, if I was write a SMS over 160 characters I hear that it automatically converts into a MMS but I was wondering if you are able to convert it back to SMS without losing the characters over 160 on this mobile and send the message over multiple SMS's? How's T9 on this phone... I heard someone say it was aggravating, does anyone else think that?

Oh and before I forget... is this phone HUGE? I've been reading people talk about how amazingly big it is but are they just going over the top? I'd like a large phone but not too big if you know what I mean Thx guys, big help in helping me choose what I want

Unfortunately, I don't have the phone to hand any more. But YES, it is HUGE. Definately one of the bigger phones (and big in a BAD way, rather than a good way like the Sharp's) out there.

Posted by: aw614

yeah its huge, and but its also lighter than the sharps it feels sorta hollow, but it doesnt feel as heavy as say a 903t/902t

Posted by: bleach1st

thx for the reply's guys i read them ages ago but my security software has stopped me from logging on until today when I learned how to uninstall it :P

Brought the phone and have received it and yeah, it is big :P but yeah it does feel hollow like aw614 said... it's freaky, you pick it up thinking it will weight alot when its actually quite light for it's size... odd :P Although I am loving the huge keys for smsing and the T9 system... makes smsing a breeze although I hate how you can't write long SMS's

I was wondering though... does anyone know the settings for MMS for this phone on vodafone Australia? I tried to copy these settings from this thread and got the internet working (with no images though...) but I couldn't get MMS to send, anyone know what might be the problem..? Thx

Also, I was wondering if anyone knew anything about video playback on this phone and the codec that it accepts because at the moment most things i transfer over are incompatible with it... The best I've got is MPEG4 Video at 300kps, AMR Narrow Band 12,000KHz 8kps in a .3gp container but that looks and sounds horrible so I was wondering if anyone knew a program or settings that I could use to make better quality videos for it.. Thx x2

I thought i might takes some photo's of it :P You've all probably seen bucket-loads of photo but maybe not of the softbank model...

Posted by: sushikid

bleach 1st, I think I ever saw you in eBay. Did you get that phone in eBay?
Can you insert the mp3 songs from your pc into it and play it?

Posted by: bleach1st

yeah i got mine off eBay

OK a little update I did get songs onto the phone but it required me to use the horribly designed Beat Engine Box which only works with Windows :/ so it's not ultra useful for me as I'm a Mac person. It plays AAC and MP3 and converts the files into some funky DRM'ed format... plus you need a memory card to use the program, otherwise it will keep coming up with 'Your need a memory card...' messages :/

Also, just a little question, every-time I got to mail or the main menu I get a message saying 'Retrieve NW Info; Settings information downloaded from Network. Start NW Information? Yes, No'. Is there anyway to stop it as it's really really annoying. I tried to install a Java game unsuccessfully and even since then it keeps coming up with this message... :/ Just as a warning - don't try to install Java games as this may happen to you

Oh plus i figured out the best quality video I can make... it's 400kps 320x240 MPEG4 with AMR Narrow Band 12,000KHz 8kps but you must change the extension to .3g2 to make it work properly, otherwise you get an error message Hope that helps anybody who needs it

Posted by: sushikid

Haha as I thought, you got it off from eBay. Me too. How much did you buy it? I bought mine for $180 including express shipping and 2 gb memory card.
The best solution for the message about downloading network informations that keeps popping up is by turn off your phone, remove your old SIM card, insert your another SIM card (can be active/inactive or another provider, I inserted T-Mobile SIM and changed it into my CIngular SIM). Then turn on again, wait a several mins, turn it off, remove the SIM and put your original SIM that you wish to use back into it, and voila..you're ready to go and the annoying popping message dissapear.
I use MAC too, and the seller didn't provide the software CD when I bought my phone so i am a little bit depressed of figuring out how to get music to play in this phone> can you please give me advice?thanks>

Posted by: bleach1st

oh wow, i got mine for around $230 in the end but I got the CD :P I've ripped it and I'll PM you with a link to the .dmg (I only have Toast on my com...) when I get it uploaded, shouldn't take tooo long but you never know... I am using aussie internet :/
Thx for telling about the sim swap thingy, I was slowly and slowly getting more pissed off with the message :P

Posted by: sushikid

Bleach1st, thanks for your kindness! .dmg file should be no problem as I am Mac user too. Wow, you got it with higher price but probably because you live in Aussie so international express shipping with insurance cost more, my seller is living at the same states with me so the shipping was cheaper. But now I am thinking of getting SHARP japanese phone as this Toshiba phone is so bulky, I would feel a little uncomfortable every time I put it in my pocket, because it would bulk my pocket. But SHARP phone or Docomo phone is sooooo expensive!!!! search for the seller whose name is "asrakimo", he/she sells japanese import unlocked cellphones and the ending bid price sometimes are even higher than iPhone!! I've been wanting this phone:
http://cgi.ebay.com/BRAND-NEW-Docom...42.m153.l126 2

What do you think? beauty huh? very sleek and nice....but the price is also nice..LOL
Anyway, can you managed to store and play the music into your 904T phone yet? and how do you transfer video into your phone? did you use beat engine thing to do it?
Thanks mate, I will wait for your PM and reply.

Posted by: sushikid

By the way, I noticed that you might also be Japanese fans from your music playlists. I am wondering if you happen to have a song "Koko ni iru yo" or "Soba ni iru ne" by Aoyama Thelma and Soulja. If you do, would you mind to upload it in MMF/SMAF format into media sharing website such as rapidshare for me? Thanks mate, greatly appreciated.

Posted by: bleach1st

ok, well just as I thought this might take a while :P it keeps cutting out on me :P oh well, it'll work eventually (maybe in 3 hours... ) but till then I did get the ringtone Soba ni Iru Ne up... it's my current ringtone so it was easy
I know what you mean about it being bulky though, it's sooooo hard to get it out of my jeans when sitting down... I must look like an idiot trying to get it out my pocket on the train :P
I love that Panasonic too, but it has no T9 so it's useless to me, the one I want is the N905i... now thats a nice phone.. but way too expensive :P Thus I brought the 904T.

I have managed to get songs on to the phone and they sound really nice (when at 192kps) with the stereo speakers at the side and the 'Wide' amplifier that makes it sound like 5.1 sound

As for video, you don't need Beat Engine Box to transfer the music to the phone, just use Bluetooth. I used a Mac program named 'MPEG Streamclip' and set the settings to 3GPP2, 400kps 320x240 MPEG4 with AMR Narrow Band 12,000KHz 8kps and it worked for me Just remember to change it from .3gp to .3g2

Posted by: sushikid

Thank youuuu so much mate! Wow so you like Soba ni Iru ne too and use it as your ringone...cool! we have a same taste. Do you happen to have another version sung by Soulja which is "Koko ni Iru yo" in mmf format as well?
As for the music, it sounds cool if you could listen to it with 5.1 sound, but until then, I have to be patient until you successfully ripped and upload the beat engine software for me.
And thank you for your advice of how to convert the video so it can be played in the phone. So all I need is Google-ing "MPEG Streamclip" software and download it, then convert the settings to 3GPP2?
Thanks again mate!

P.S.: I may sound dumb but I have no idea what T9 input is and now I found out and learning it after Googled it LOL.
