SE47 SLider problem: intermittent access to menu and contacts

Hi,
I just bought a Kyocera SE47 from Ebay. It has a very annoying problem. Often, when I slide it open, the display doesn't become "interactive" i.e. the Menu and Contact tabs don't appear and I have no way to access the functions of the phone. I can still manually dial a number (press buttons and click send) and the call goes through even though no numbers appear on the screen.
When I reboot the phone, it will often work for a few openings and closings and then becomes non-responsive again.
I selected a sound effect for opening and for closing and these play every time I open and close the phone. This leads me to believe that the phone "knows" it's being opened i.e. its not a physical problem with the magnetic switch I've read about on some of the other posts at this forum.

Any advice gratefully received!

I, too, have begun experiencing this problem. I remove the battery and it'll last a couple openings and closings like Paraic here mentioned.

Does anyone think it's the battery that needs replacing? I'd much rather buy a new battery than replace the phone. What do you think?
