Free Alltel Data Connection

First of all, yes I did search for this.

I just got a Treo 650 today to replace my old LG 5450. My carrier is Alltel. With my old phone I could plug it into my computers USB port and use it as a modem to dial the "qnc" (#777) network. It was slow as hell, but it only used talk minutes and did not require a data plan.

I'd like to do the same with my Treo, however my computer does not see it as a modem when I plug it in. What do I need to do?

Also, is it possible to connect the treo directly to the #777 service so that I can use the web browser and instant messenger without buying a data plan?

Update: I still haven't got QNC working, but from what I've read, it seams Alltel may block this. Is that true?

If so, what other options do I have for connecting to the internet without a data plan? Bluetooth? Wi-Fi? Something else?

I dunno about free data, but I can tell you how to set everything up to use your treo as a modem via bluetooth. I'm going to assume you're using XP.

1. Make sure your Bluetooth is on & set it to discoverable, and that your Treo is paired with your PC. Also, make sure dial-up networking is enabled(in your 'bluetooth places' click on the Treo & click 'properties, then the services tab).

2. Go to Control Panel> Network & Internet Connections> Network Connections. In the sidebar you should see "create a new connection". Click that.

3. In the wizard that comes up, select 'connect to the internet', then 'set up my connection manually', then 'connect using a dial-up modem'. Click next.

4. In the next screen you should be able to find 'standard modem over bluetooth link' or something similar. Select that & click next.

5. In the series of screens that come up next you need to enter your ISP name, username, and phone number. Enter all of that & finish up.

It SHOULD work if you did it right.

And if all else fails, try PDAnet. Google it.

I haven't tried that, but it should work. The problem is, that provides internet access to my computer. I'm looking for a way to have internet access directly from my phone. Ideally, I'd like to be able to sit on my couch or in bed and use AIM on my treo.

In that case I'd try posting your question in the Alltel forums, they'd know more about that.
