e815 front screen txt read

just got a text msg and when i flipped the lid close i was able to read it through the front screen by pressing the volume button to scroll down or up. then when i pressed the speaker button it took me back to the messages screen and still id flipped close?????? now i cant get it to do it again....any1 know how to do this everytime?
