Mpx200 worth it as a temp phone?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I'm using a Nokia 3200b since the Moto V551 in my profile broke and I'm looking at a replacement phone.

I can either get a cheap mpx200 and use that since I'm on T-mobile and maybe upgrade it with wm5. I've read some of the threads but I wonder what people think now with more wm5 phones out there and the prices of an mpx220 coming down (also an option but I see the stories of the build quality)

OR:

Keep using the Nokia and get an SDA when my contract is up in September or get one off Craigslist or etc.

What would you guys do?

Thanks

unless you have a dire love of flip phones, get an SDA, it's hands down 100000% better than the mpx200.

If you have the patience to wait two months, then that would be the best course of action. However, the prices for an MPx200 are fairly cheap on eBay right now. I remember seeing some going for only $50.

Thx for the suggestions, i sadly might have to go with a mpx200 just due to bills/girlfriend issues so would i miss out on a lot with an mpx200 with wm5? I don't thether or use bluetooth really

i think you miss a lot if you are a poweruser...
wm5 on mpx200 is not very stable/fast

anyone else use it, I don't think an SDA is an option until september at the earliest

I got one on ebay for just that reason. I use my Sony T616 when I don't want to lug the MPX200 around. Overall I like the MPX, it is nice to be able to use PTab and Pocket streets on a cheap PPC phone. Only bad thing is tha battery life.

I recommend it.

I played with Moto MPX200 for few days some time ago.
Back then I was thrilled with the abilities it had, compared to my Moto V300.
But it were 'back then'.
IMHO it is very outdated nowadays, and even if you want to use it as a phone and mp3 player only - lack of thumbkeyboard, tiny screen, 'dumb' SD port (you cant use i.e. Wi-Fi SDIO card - thus all you get is just GPRS for web connection) and really slow processor combined with tiny amount of ram make it worthless IMHO.
I too love clamshell phones myself, but I hesitated when I was about to buy MPX200, and today Im actually glad I haven't bought that cold turkey.
Of course choice is yours.
But given the opportunity of buying newer (by design) handy as you say, why would you even consider spending $ on such old piece of cellullar history?

As much as I LOVE mine, I don't think you should buy one AS A BACKUP...I mean with so much people having problem with it (not me tho), I don't think it is a good idea to use it as a backup. Worse case scenario, Your current phone is dead or out of battery and you turn on your mpx200, Uh Oh, it doesn't boot or hang at the Motorola screen...Now you're stuck with two dead phone....Not necessary dead but useless as of that time....

A backup phone, IMO, should be a reliable one so I think you should stay away unless you want it just for fun or as a third phone (not for backup nor main use, just on certain occasion)....HOpe this help ya....

PS...I love mine though...

Im having MPX200 for 9 months. Since then I had 2 software changes (from original flashed with another WM2002 ROM, and after 1 month changed it with WM2003 (Supermoto_2 version)). I can only say that phone works flawlessly, never had 1 problem with it. Case quality is the best I've ever seen.
Only thing bad about this phone is battery life, but in my case problem was solved when I bought car-adapter. I work as a sales rep, spending a lot of time in my car. I have 2000 contacts all the time in my moto, and synchronizing with Oulook is pretty fast (much faster compared to either WM2002 or WM2005).
Bigger PDA's are certainly more powerfull but less handy, so if you are looking for something smart that looks like phone, and not like brick there is no mistake with this thing.
People often post their threads partially without posting what OS or what software they are running on their devices. There is a lot of excellent software for windows mobile, but there is also a lot of crap.
You can trust me about this baby because:
I don't work for Motorola
I don't work for Microsoft
I use my phone minimum 10 hrs daily
I can relly on it
It's my best phone experience so far

Buy it!

lol, i would NEVER buy a 4 year old phone, let alone a 4 year old computer!

Posted by: phnikola

Even if it was 10 years old - its still good choice for business people.
Have you ever had one?

I really can afford much more expensive model, but I don't need it!
Moto is doing just fine...

Besides everyone has certain needs. So try to be little more constructive. I understand that forum is the place where you can search for help.
I don't see you're helping.

I'll post no more replies

oh yes, i HAVE owned one way back when they first came out. and any newer smartphone will run circles around that ancient beast. try the htc star trek and see if your feelings don't change!

I haven't seen it in action but I really doubt that phone with QVGA display, WM2005 and 200Mhz core, could be 10x faster than phone with 176x220 display, WM2003 even if it runs on 132Mhz. I have installed OMAPClock utility which can raise speed up to 156Mhz on mine "ancient" phone. But again, I don't need that. Phone runs smoothly...

Other thing is the design. HTC looks like spaceship. I preffer classic design. He who had Mpx200, knows what I'm talkin about.

Cheers!

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8700/4.1.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/107)

I never had the mpx200, but I did have the mpx220 a few times. I read all of the posts about problems and I have to say that it was one of my favorite phones and I never had a hardware problem with it. I sold mine when I would get bored and wanted to try other phones and found myslef going back to it at least 3 times. I have had the sp5 which is a great phone too and I now have the qtek 8500 which I love. My reasons for not buying the mpx200 at this time would be due to its size, poor battery life, and os. I have used several wm5 smartphones and they are all a little buggy. I can only imagine the frustration of using a mpx200 with the wm5 rom on it.

I like my mpx220 so much that I almost bought a mpx200 to bring camping. Just in case I broke the phone or lost it (I'm not much of a camper but I have friends who love it so I occasionally go). Sadly I couldn't go camping as I had to work so I saved myself some money.

btw I love how many people on this board hates the mpx200 and 220. Those giant brick and candy bar style phones may be faster and/or touch screens or qwerty keyboards but some of us would rather have a phone we can just shove in our pocket without it taking up the whole thing. Granted the 8500 looks like us flip smartphone lovers finally have an upgrade option but until I can play around with one in person I for one won't be dumping my 220.

I am happy with the 2003 OS on mine. The PDA functionality is fine for the price. Im not so happy with battery life. But I thinkk the killer for me is reception on this phone, I get no signal at my house. My T616 gets a little, enough to make calls from the 2nd floor.

As for the original post, I would still recommend getting one if you are on a tight budget, or in my case, just want to try out a smartphone without letting go of >$200.
