The only downside I saw anyone commenting on was the memory card, and since I don't have any sd cards at all (everything is Sony/SE, so nothin' but Memory Sticks in my house) it didn't seem to be an issue for me. So, dw got herself a new SE phone, and I began frequenting Howard Forums. In the interim, the 8525 has been threatened and withdrawn so often I have psychological whiplash. The challenge of video calling was vanquished by deleting the front camera, apparently because Cingular isn't going to do video calling. A convenient programmable side button was hijacked for push to talk, with coding so insidious even the best crackers have been left scratching their nether regions pondering the destructive path wrought by Cingular engineers. Still, delays, innuendos, broken promises and rumors floated around. Rumors that 3g features would be available on the 2.5g network surfaced. Rumors that the push-to-talk integration would be done some time in February bobbled up to the surface. Further rumors whispered forth that video calling was in progress, and would probably be live within a year. Various random outbursts from Cingular indicated a release date some time between yesterday and early 2007. In the midst of this fear, uncertainty and doubt, Roc A Fella reached down from his steel tower and gifted us all with the glimmer of hope. However... I fully intend to have my next phone for two years. Despite the obvious need for the latest technomarvel, I have a bit more difficulty convincing DW that a new phone trumps more mundane expenses like food and baby diapers (especially diapers!) With this in mind, I want to have the best device I can get today, because in a couple of years it will probably degrade to 'average.' If instead I opt for some crippled, pitiable shell of a device, with all its naughty bits ripped out and replaced with defective dlls, in a couple of years it will seem even more a hinderance. My further concern with the general idea of the 8525 release can be summed up easily. Cingular deliberately removed the front facing camera, allegedly because they did not want to release a device with an utterly useless feature. If they release it before the Push-To-Talk feature works, they will be shipping a device with an utterly useless feature. A feature, I might add, which they forced into what was previously a perfectly serviceable device. This only leaves a handful of logical conclusions: 1) Cingular is announcing Push-To-Talk very soon (doubtful) 2) The 8525 will not ship with a push-to-talk button (again, doubtful) 3) The 8525 will not release until Push-To-Talk is announced (allegedly, February 2007, and I'd tend to believe the Fella fellow, making this doubtful as well) 4) Cingular's decision making process is either insane or mildly retarded What I find most amusing is that everyone seems to be hoping for the last. |

Is it true that the HTC TyTN is quad band for UMTS (800, 850, 1900, 2100 MHz) while the Cingular phone is triband (no 800 MHz)? I saw this while comparing the specs of the phones on PDAdb.net. Where is the 800 MHz band used for UMTS and what would I be giving up if I don't have it while traveling internationally? |

The 800 band is the same thing as 850, but some people use 850 to be more specific. All you need to know is that this phone has every single band and mode available in the world (excluding CDMA of course). You can travel to any country in the world and use this phone.

Also, got a reply from the contact in England regarding the SPV M3100's he has for sale. He has the ability to get more. Unfortunately, he is going on vacation and will not be back until the 30th. So, if the 8525 gets released before then, great! If not, going to order a M3100 in early November. |

With that said here is a couple things to consider. 1. The rebate form, yes the bogus form everyone keeps talking about... not saying it is bogus but I am saying it is invalid with no phone out there. This form is actually on the Cingular.com website. meaning before when i would type in 8525 there was nothing but some addy in texas and now it is that rebate form. 2. Someone who works at Best Buy says it is in there system slated for October... 3. More and more pics popping up on the internet. 4. There is a good chance that the phone will be out before the November 26th (AKA Black Friday) due to hyped up Holiday shopping... meaning no one would want to release a phone after the fact of every family in America is pretty much going to be broke come the end of November. With all of these points... I am going to say the end of October, HIGHLY likely... First week of November second most likely... and anything after that Highly UNLIKELY and completely RETARDED by cingular / bell south / att<<who is this company again... lol, I mean all att has to do now is by Verizon and they will have effectly built a bigger monopoly than the one they created before they got split up by the DOJ... ![]() |

I also had fun when I went to pay my bill because every time I go into the store I nag them about when the 8525 is coming out and this time when I walked in the door the guy said - hey good news (I thought oh no - they released it) and then he said - I got to play with the 8525 the other day - it should be out by the begining of next month - I got to say - even better news - I don't need it and showed him the TyTN. He said after playing with mine for a few minutes that it was very similar (there's a surprise) but he seemed to thing the TyTN's performance was slightly better and after playing with both he would probably get a TyTN himself instead of the 8525 so coming from a guy who had now had hands on with both - I was happy to hear that.
I doubt that the TyTN actually preforms any better - I suspect that either the 8525 he played with had lots of programs actively running/installed on it or that it's just happened to be the one he most recently played with so it just seemed better (kinda like if you're buying a car you are most likely to buy the last one you test drive) - I don't know. |
