If you're due for a discounted upgrade, you can get a new 8125 from Cing for $150 I believe (or cheaper??). You're friend is not giving you much if any of a "friend" discount . . .

that TYTN looks so cheap and hideous.

From a practical standpoint, the TyTN's external button spacing is better for larger hands, so it seems. I have been noticing that tightly spaced buttons are causing my hands to cramp. On the other hand, the slide-out keyboard is slightly smaller than the 8125 and that totally sucks. The 8525 looks like it suffers from the same small keyboard layout.

Not to mention the fact that when I bought the 8125 I thought it was a more attractive device than T-Mobile's MDA. But after playing with an MDA for couple hours, I realized that I liked it better. That's why I went for the TyTN. I knew I would get more out of the device than the 8525, though I do find that phone very attractive. Maybe I'll sell the TyTN and get an 8525 once they come down in price a bit... Only time will tell.

Has anyone noticed that on PDAbd.net they list the 8525 as Hermes 160. If that's correct then I guess there is 4 variants of the Hermes (100, 160, 200, 300)
8525 Link
I guess since it doesn't have the front camera, but is similar to the Hermes 100, they decided to lable it hermes 160.
Also the site lists its release date as October 2006. So let's hope for next Monday or sooner.

I already don't like the change from miniSD to microSD. That's $140 worth of storage cards I can throw away if I decide to switch. (or almost $200 for new ones) I also don't like the absence of a 2.5mm plug. I spent five hours on airplanes last week watching movies on my 8125 with TCPMP. That's another 8525 deal killer, IMO, another $20 for a converter. Feels more solid, however, with the exception of the battery cover, which looks like it may come off pretty easily if the latch is accidentally hit. Not sure I'll be rushing out to replace my 8125 at this point.

Wow! Useful information... if there is no 2.5mm jack, what is in its place? Also is there a standard mini-usb jack for charge/sync or something like the 3125?

I am almost fed up with Cingular... I am peeved because I would have bought the 8125 like 2 months ago but haven't becuase I am waiting for the 8525... Again, I have considered leaving cingular because of the moto Q back when it first came out... Why? not because the moto Q was this thechno marvel, but because the writing was on the wall of a company that was willing and capable of releasing phones on time or at least on some level that is consitant with keeping up with the times, or at the very least some sort of on par level with the rest of the world who already has better phones than us...

This disgusts me and I dont' understand what Cingy's problem is...the tast in my mouth is super sour and I am really disgusted by the way cingular handles phone releases...

Furthermore, why in Tarnations is the 6925 getting a release date... and this phone has to "phantomly" drop whenever the heck it is ready...

Come on corporate smuckssssss Think about what you're doing..

I am 4 months and 2 months overdue on my phones upgrades... I feel like I am paying month to month rent or something on THESE CRAP V600'sssss...

ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Where'd you get it for $550? I didn't pay $800, but 550 is a steal!

There's a modified USB jack that also serves as the earphone jack. (The USB is also compatible with standard USB sync cables and chargers.)

are you kidding me? I can buy a freaking computer with monitor for 550... why in GODS GOOD NAME would 550 or 800 be a steal...

Those are pretty strong words. I had a choice to purchase or not purchase the device. I chose to purchase it. So how exactly was I "bent over and ripped a new one"? And not that this justifies it, but how is this any different than a female purchasing an expensive purse, or some dude spending thousands of dollars on his car's stereo? And who are you to judge what I spend my money on?

And anyway, I already have a computer with a monitor; a few actually. Why would I need another one of those?

Posted by: FungFlex

I agree with richy, and as your name implies I am sure we have some similar spending habits, but anyway Christian15213 you really should keep the posting to a minimum considering all your posts point to one major fact: you don't have any information pertaining to the device release and therefore are merely making this **** thread even more of a crap sandwich.

btw I join the large group of people who will merely watch and no longer contribute to this mess

You've gotta pay to play. Don't be stupid. Money buys toys. Being frugal isn't becoming of someone on a niche messageboard or a unreleased PDA thread.

Posted by: pcmike

You jerk! I just spit on my laptop when I saw the phrase "crap sandwich." Now I gotta go clean my damn screen and waht not... UGH.

Hey guys. You'll get a kick out of this.
SHAPE instant messenger says the 8525 is supported. It has it's own little box on the right "IM+ for Cingular 8525" with a picture.
http://www.shapeservices.com/en/pro...atform=pocketpc
Obviously it's supported since it's WM5, that's a given. I just got a kick out of seeing the 8525 explicitly mentioned.

I guess you all were right. I went into a retail store here in Atlanta and they had their first shipments of 8525 in, but not on the floor yet. I purchased mine and I must say it makes my 8125 look like the dog I always knew it was. It has the power of the SX66 without the phone glitches. i would post pictures, but it looks just like the device posted on page 1 of this thread. Enjoy them!

Yes, there is a mini (modified?) USB jack and it works with my ordinary USB cables, and there were also headphones in the box that will plug into it. Sadly, what this means to me is that I cannot listen to mp3's or watch a movie (or Slingbox Mobile) using headphones while the device is charging, plugged into my car's cigarettle lighter (as a passenger) or plugged into my PC. Keep in mind that this is not an observation I base on speculative future usage of the device, rather how I have used my 8125 in my real life for many months.

I do have to add on the plus side, when I threw in my SIM card and fired it up (all my testing had been done without the SIM until about 10pm last night), the little service icon that usually shows "E" or "G" showed "U". I ran a few speed tests (not sure if they were SpeakEasy, CNET, DSL Reports, etc.) and they were consistently showing 400kbps download speeds. Nice.

You purchased the phone three days before the official release (supposedly) in a corp Cingular store? That sounds pretty odd. Please show us some proof.

I also want to see proof of that early release 8525

Regardless.....I WANT THIS DEVICE NOW!!!

That never happens, I’m not saying I don’t believe you, I am saying you either dealt with the stupidest sales person or you definitely (like your name implies) are "conekkted". When I worked at a corp. store, it was serious procedure and risk of termination if product got out even a few hours early. But congrats, however one more questions plagues my thoughts, what was the price at? I can’t sift through the 180 pages of thread to pick it out, so I am not even sure there was an official price out. SO what is it?

I would suggest perscription medications if lack of phones gives you a "sour taste in your mouth."

christian, heh, don't be an idiot. You pay 700$ for a device that is both 1. not available in the US and god knows when it will be and 2. is unlocked. an unlocked non-us phone you can always expect to pay a bit more for. the 8525 will still be 400-500$ so the actual difference is minimal.

it's also funny that you say this a few posts later

so you're bending over and getting ripped a new one by choice. nice.

also a note @ theepp:

go to xda-developers.com, i know there have been posts about headphones/charging accessories, you might be able to find what you need there.

Sweet. By "modified" mini-USB, the old charger/cable from the 8125 will still work to charge, right? That would suck if they changed that since I have a bunch of chargers.

So the headphones actually plug into the mini-USB port? That is kind of funky and a bit of a kick in the pants to using this phone with my motorcycle intercom system. Guess I can't be "working" anymore while I'm out on the bike . Hopefully boxwave or someone will put out some adapters.

I still can't figure out all the new crud they put into this phone that they needed to drop Mini-SD for micro, AND drop the headphone jack. Are the sides of the device that crowded?

I've seen some rumored retail prices for the 8525, but does anyone have any idea what the business price will end up being?

Please keep in mind that I did not get this from a local retailer, so what is in the box may not be what comes in the retail box, YMMV...but, the charger that came in the box is the same exact one (identical make/model) that came with my 8125.

First thing I did was search for a converter (felt similar to my search for a 3.5mm to 2.5mm converter search from last year) and came across this one that will probably do the trick (or something non-Motorola out there that is probably similar). But, as I noted, even though this will enable me to use my current Shure E3c's, I cannot use them while on external power.

I will check out xda-developers and see if they have another solution.

OK so now I am thoroughly confused did you get the phone at a retail store or not? Or are you now talking about chargers and adapters?

Also my earlier question stands...which store? I'd like to go by there myself today! (PM me if you don't want to start a riot )

No, I did not get it from a retail store. Where did I ever state that I did? The quote you attribute to me was not from me, it was from conekkted...

As for the adaptors...after heading over to xda-developers, it looks like these two devices used in tandom (which would ideally be contained on a single dongle) will solve the problem:

http://www.mobileplanet.com/product.asp?code=140425
http://www.expansys.com/product.asp...47&sbadd=138247

Thanks for the pointer, robothero.

My buddies store got the e62 a few days before the release & sold me one of the 3 they got in so I believe that this guy got his that way. I don't have a computer at work so I need a phone, internet, email, office, etc. So spending $500+ on these phones doesnt phase me. I would like to see some pictures though.

The new usb port is called EMU (Enhanced Mini USB) and you can find converters to 3.5 relatively easy on Google using "EMU to 3.5mm"... As for being able to listen while on charge, I have been keeping an eye out for the past few months and still have not seen one of these.. EDIT: Posted above.. Good find and thanks for putting my mind at ease..

Didn't I say something similar a few pages back? Hmm...

As mentioned, there are "EMU" converters available, or you can check this page, which outlines how to modify the included accessory to meet your needs.

And regarding the new micro SD card, they've got to drive sales of accessories somehow. Otherwise, there'd be no reason to continue developing smaller and more expensive memory cards!

Think about this:
We know iPAQ 6925 will launch on October 31, with its official release announced couple days ago by Cingular.
There is never any official announcement regarding 8525 made by Cingular until now, and people hope it will launch on October 29, even before 6925.
Does not this sound too good to be true?

Incorrect. 6925 was announced by HP... since HTC isn't actually branding the 8525, they don't have the rights to manage its publicity, which means they can't announce for themselves. It's very possible, though not likely that the 8525 will come out before the 6925.

From what I understand... because the 6925 is a non-3g, non-PTT device and because Cingular signed a deal with HP to carry the 6925 when it was ready, and Cingular wants to push the poop out of 3g and PTT in the very near future, they want some chance of somebody out there actually buying the 6925... the odds of that happening with 8525 sitting next to it are not great, especially after all the hype they plan on pumping into 3g and PTT. Therefore it would be stupid, from their perspective, to release the 8525 first. They want to give the 6925 a headstart.

I would be willing to bet that the reason the 8525 has been delayed as long as it has (and will be) is in many ways connected to the release of the 6925.

Just a guess...

Exactly, there is no possible way that Cingular will allow the purchase of a phone before the release... The post I made a few pages back about a girl in my class winning one is true tho, but she won't have it for about a month (that's when they agreed to send one to her) I have no doubt in my mind that it will be release on the first week of Nov... Just going by what some of the corp. heads over here have been saying.

No, from the initial ABC news at this link: http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/ZDM/story?id=2606141, you can see it was definately Cingular's release. In fact, HP itself already released that device (as 6945) couple months ago and has been selling it on its own web site since then. It is Cingular that decided to make it "carrier certified" and officially release it on October 25, and make them publically available after October 31.
Right now the Cingular's NBO order system shows a status of "Coming soon" under HP 6925. In contrast, there is abosulently no comparable information listed under 8525. Nothing pointing to any information like "expecting 1600-piece shipment on Oct 31". The best know information is that Cingular had a vender meeting with HTC last week and asking HTC to fix some bluetooth pairing problem with some of the Cingular's existing headsets.

Anyone else notice this was posted at 5am? Must be that all-night Cingular store down in ATL!

Just got mine, what a nice upgrade from the 8125. It was sitting on my doorstep when I got home last night, so far no lock ups like my 8125.

Actually, you're incorrect. The ABC news piece was an article, not a press release, that was actually from PCMag. The press release, which is all over the place and serves as the official announcement, was written, issued, and paid for by HP, or rather their PR agency. HP released the hw6945, which is actually a different device...

A bit on me, I work in PR and my brother works for ABC news, I don't have any inside info on the phones, but I can tell you what's going on as far as releases, news flow, and the media.

I made no mention of the 8525. All I did was say that I had 3 2125's and then 2 8125's and that my current phone was locking up all the time and I was missing calls. The rep said let me see what I can do, put me on hold for about five minutes. He came back on the line and said they had a new phone out that they were going to send me. I asked it if it had the same functions and he said yes. When I got the 8125 for a 2125 I made no mention of getting a different phone either, they just offered.

I'm not saying that you're lying, but your credibility is greatly diminished by not simply providing proof that you received an unreleased phone as a free upgrade/replacement from Cingular when people like me are willing to pay for one and can't get it yet.

When you get defensive when people ask you about getting pictures of the box or other info, that immediately increases my BS meter.

What's the ROM version and date or radio version of your 8525? What's the AKU number? All you need to do is look in the phone info for these simple things.

It's funny how people get all "fed up" when it comes time to put up or shut up.

"I do!"

"No you don't"

"Yes, I do"

"Prove it..."

"I don't have to take this! I'm outta here!"

Look, Patrickem, If you can prove that you got it thru the means you say, then that gives us hope that it is right around the corner. And, some of us may be able to get one thru the same means. That's alls we're saying.

Does the phone get Cingular video like the other 3G phones?

if anybody wants that powerpoint pm me and I'll e-mail it to you...I dl'ed it before it disappeared

PLEASE INCLUDE AN E-MAIL ADDY IN THE PM!

interesting quote from the ppt:
359.99 with 2 yr agreement and qualifying data and voice plans

BMG Pricing:
Cingular no commitment: $559.99
1 year commitment: $484.99*
2 year commitment: $409.99*
* 1 and 2 year commitments are eligible for an additional $50 off of the above prices with the purchase of an unlimited data plan and $39.99 or higher voice plan.

Posted by: nawaf88

what does BMG stand for?

Posted by: FungFlex

another interesting quick tidbit is the phone comes with a y adapter for the mini-usb cable

Posted by: richy240

a Y adapter? So you can what, charge it twice as fast? (Don't make fun, I know this wouldn't work.)

Posted by: YumYum82

The 8525 uses the same USB port for both power and headphones. You need the Y adapter to both charge/sync and listen to music.

pm'd you about the ppt

Hey thanks, I see that they are adding the y-adapter in the box. I have a tytn and have been trying to find a y-adapter. I will be getting on of these also for a member of my family...thanks again for the ppt

Target launch date: October 29
8100/8125 will remain in market through 2006; no additional price reductions

Yeah, I know it lacks a 2.5mm earphone jack, but I didn't consider this when I asked that question. I don't believe my TyTN came with one of these. Now I have to go look...

EDIT: My TyTN did not come with the "Y" adapter referenced above. That totally sucks.

Posted by: cuidinsider

lol thats the best one yet charge twice as fast im not really sure ?really not sure maybe if your in your car and your using it as a umts modem it eats battery so you can charge with one and use activesync or w.e. on the other but it charges off usb so i have no clue what it maybe lol and i work for the company lol good news i stayed at a holiday inn last night

Posted by: dhartung02

Very interesting PowerPoint Indeed. The price they offer is very enticing as well as the October 29th Launch Date. 359.99 With rebate for 2 year agreement and data plan is pretty nice! Its only 409 with no data plan. If its like previous phones I have purchased off of premier.....the premier price might be 359 for 2 year agreement with data, and then we can subtract the 50 dollar mail in rebate to make it 309!! Ive got my fingers crossed!! I dont know whats up with a Sunday Release date....but ill for sure be checking the premier site when Sunday rolls around!

Posted by: YumYum82

anyone feeling nice and want to PM me the PPT too??

Posted by: SoberGuy

Reading further on, it says the best BMG price is 409, but eligible for the 50 buck MIR, so after rebate it's $359. I still think that's a really good price. I'm as anxious as most folks, but that PPT really turned the itch up another notch. We'll see if the 10/29 release date holds true (I doubt it).

Posted by: nawaf88

anybody notice in the PPT that the wired headset has a 2.5mm plug rather then the usb plug-in. maybe i'm just nit-picking

Posted by: fxguy

The powerpoint also lists the Treo 750 in Cingulars palm portfolio and shows a picture but doesn't say a launch date.

Posted by: SoberGuy

I'm a gonvernment employee.....haha

I'll call my contact in government solutions if this doesn't release on the 29th. She's the best.

Posted by: wierdo

I don't think the 29th is a likely date, since Cingular generally doesn't release phones on Sundays...

Posted by: TriAxis

I tried both links listed in the PPT and neither one of them show the 8525 yet. The www.cingular.com/cingular8525 link says page cannot be displayed and the www.cingular.com/pocketpc link doesn't show the 8525 on it.

So...target date October 29th coming from CINGULAR, not some dude's brother's uncle's second cousin. It's not a firm date, but at least we know that Cingular wants, and is planning to drop it very soon. As soon as next week, so everybody play it cool.

If it slips for a week or two to fix the headset issues that are rumored out there, so be it. This powerpoint is proof, or close enough to it, that Cingular wants it out next week, so if the date slips, it's because they are working on making it perfect.

Klinquist, I think I speak for everyone (who wasn't fast enough to see the thread that the .ppt was taken off) by saying thanks for posting that .ppt on your blog.

or, cingular wants to release this phone on a non-business day because of how the 8125 release went. I'm sure that if they ship this phone out and you have it on Friday, you'll be happy with cing.

We'll see soon enough. If I can get it for under $300 with my discount I will probably go ahead and buy it...

Posted by: bobbypilsner

I think it is legit. At least the 680 sample ad looks to me like it's real. I don't know who would take the time to put that level of detail (listing all those Illinois Cingular store locations). But who knows for sure? I like that there is some correlation between the ppt deck and what the employee that went through training and posted in the other thread about the 3G rollout this weekend.

Maybe there will be a NFL PTT & 3G Ad campaign kicking off on Sunday.

Well, hope it gets released...I need to get on my FAN corporate pricing. We have a great deal on PDA connect and a flat rate plan. I barely use my phone and most of the people I talk to are on Cingular already so I am looking forward to my bill going way down (after expensing data ).

Have fun all

after looking through that popwer point presentation, it looks like cingular customers may have gps via the 8525 also!

Posted by: riDuh7

I think it was only the pre-loaded software... in the ROM. As it is also saying that it requires the external GPS solution...

Posted by: RF9

It's also subscription based with an external (blutooth) GPS. You're better off just buying a 3rd party GPS solution.

Posted by: Quatre

so will it be in stores on sun? or not till mon?

Posted by: SteinyD

Modified mini-USB connector using 6 pins instead of 5. There is a converter available now (just last week) from Mobileplanet / Expansys for about $15. Alternatively, a nice wireless bluetooth headset will work much more nicely without wires!

Again, FWIW, the box I have came with a case...almost identical to the one that came with my 8125, but instead of a snap, the case has a (strong) magnetic flap/cover. Much better, IMO.

As noted, GPS service is subscription based, Telenav, and requires a external GPS receiver. I'll stick with my TomTom Navigator and Bluetooth.

Posted by: mrtibbs

as far as cingular sales rep on the phone...they have no knowlege of it being released tomorrow...he said that they usually get info a week before it's released but with the 8525 this is not the case

Posted by: tremcotexas

[QUOTE=theepp]Again, FWIW, the box I have came with a case...almost identical to the one that came with my 8125, but instead of a snap, the case has a (strong) magnetic flap/cover. Much better, IMO.

Be careful with the case... Many owners have stated issues that the magnet in the case can cause some screwy issues with the screen due to the magnet that the device utilizes to realize if the keyboard is extended or not. I have jasjam and just decided not to use case.

Overall- You guys should love the device, I have become very comfortable with the location of the buttons (same as 8525). There are some issues still that happen from time to time that get me a little pissed; I will be interested to see if the 8525 has these same little issues; but overall it is a great device!

I think my biggest gripe with the 8125 buttons is that the end key never locks (even when you have the button lock enabled). Using a BT headset with the phone in the case on your belt, if you sit the wrong way, the end key gets pressed, ending the call.

I gotcha. I have a nice bluetooth headset, the problem is my motorcycle has an intercom system (handles mp3, mobile phone, bike to bike comms, etc.) that has a 2.5mm jack for mobile phone. I need some way of getting the 8525 to 2.5mm mono, since the bluetooth expansion for the intercom is hella expensive.

OK you knuckleheads. This isn't a hostage situation (post pictures next to today's paper...you watch too much 24). Don't you all have wives or families that you need to be spending more time with? I work for Cingular's IT department in Alpharetta, GA. You will get your shot at the 8525 in the next few weeks. You all remind me of the World of Warcraft episode I recently saw on South Park. You all have wasted so much time reading and posting on this ridiculous thread. You can never get that time back. And worse yet, when the device does actually come out to the general public, you all will waste every bit of your day trying to get skype working or the latest cooked ROM installed. And you will all start crying about the bugs in the 8525 and how it was released TOO EARLY without enough QA. HAHAHA. My 2 year old has more patience then you goofballs.

All I can say is that the 8125 was a gap filler. It is a piece of junk. The SX66 was much better (more buttons, much faster processor, better keyboard...the side-sliders are not very functional). All the "problems" of the SX66 were easily overcome by anyone who had any clue about PPC configuration and hacking.

The 8525 is head and shoulders better than the 8125, but only slightly better than the SX66. A few months after you all get it you will simply be slobbering over some new device that was leaked out on engadget. And then some moron will start another "rumor and conjecture" forum to waste everyones time all over again.

You see all of that green stuff outside your window. It's called "the rest of the world". Go out and join it.

Good lord! I have to have that big-***** honkin' adapter sticking out the bottom of the phone just to plug in a headset? I mean, yeah, use a bluetooth for your hands-free, but that about listening to music or MobiTV on ear buds? I though it was bad enough that I had to use a right angle adapter for 2mm to 3mm head sets on the 8125 and Treo 650 which I usually end up using hybrids.

Problem is this little note:

Note: The audio adaptor is only used for lisening to music, and does not contain a microphone. Please unplug the adaptor for making or receiving phone calls.

I have a bad feeling I am going to end up with like 4 adapters plugged into one another to get to 2.5mm mono, or just ponying up the $150 for the bluetooth module

I guess it's worth it to be "working from home" when I'm out playing on the bike.

WFT? you can't stick a wired hands free headset in? Is that a different adapter? Nevermind I'll find out in a few days. I'm going to 30-day exchange my 8125 for this thing since the Treo 750 isn't going to make it in time. (I'm still all about the 750 when and if it comes.)

How have you not been banned yet? I deleted my flame because furthering your rant turns this board in to something I hate and I won't be sucked in to it. Please just go away. You're not wanted here (not that anyone else wants your 0 tact around.)

Appearently I have a nicer mouth than yours. Right back at ya big guy. At least I don't try to trick the swear filters.

Clean up your act and maybe we'll let you stay.

Lets get this back on track, shall we?

Yes conekkted, we're all big losers looking forward to the next gadget. We're all very aware of this. Thanks for pointing out the obvious...

Now, for some real discussion. Lets assume that Cingular is planning release tomorrow, Oct 29th. This could be only to premier/government sites and when they will launch the web site and begin marketing - it may not show up in retail stores until this week (or beyond).

If they do plan on it being in retail stores tomorrow, then we can assume they'll arrive today via saturday delivery. If anyone has a contact at a cingular company store, perhaps they could ask them... Delivery has probably already happened on the east coast.

The premier site is still down, and we can all speculate it's for updating to include the 8525 .

klinquist,

my premier site is up and running. I havent had any issues getting into it

What intercom do you have? I have a Chatterbox, which is coming out with a bluetooth unit next year, but it's hella expensive!

I go a different route. I go to my corporate email account and click a link for cingular premier website and it takes me directly to the premier website with the name of my company up top. I've seen this cingular premier website where it asks for login in, and password. I dont have a login or password? where do I get that from?

Looks like a nice system, but with the bluetooth adaptor and all it looks about the same price as the Chatterbox (for the system w/ bike-to-bike communication anyway).

once you link your existing cingular account as a Premier account im pretty sure you would use the same login info as your Cingular account? i dont know.

Posted by: aadadams

That would be too much like right. It does not work that way. When you want to use Premier you have to follow the link from the confirmation email or log in.

Nah. My cingular UID/PW doesn't work on my premiere account. I can't figure it out. I think some companies have a UID/PW set of for the whole account. So you either get a UID/PWD from your company to access the site, OR you get the mail link if applicable just for your personal access. It's like an either/or situation, I don't think you can just get your own UID/PW.
I just pulled the URL from the email source and bookmark it. That way I can log in and check it obsessively.
I did strip off the session ID from the URL, not that it matters so I have it like this...
