Of course, now you've set the bar pretty high: I can't wait to see your next post!

I agree. I don't want this until it's ready. The last thing I want to do is read 20 threads per day complaining about "this thing is crap, why did they release it with so many dang bugs. (Basically what happened when Palm launched the Treo 650.)

the 650 has been around for a while now and it still resets here and there with out any reason---imagine that

ok, now the 3125 is out so maybe we'll see the 8525 this month too! i'm really holding out for the 8525 but i may have to "settle" on the 3125 if its not out by the time my dad wants to upgrade.

anybody have any new news on either this or the new treo?

I have had my TyTN for about five days now. I think I have spent at least five hours a day just messing with it. In most ways, it is an awesome machine. It is the first handheld that is really useful for browsing the Internet offering at least 300KB (and as much as 600 KB) on Cingular's high-speed network in the San Francisco Bay area. Even better than that, when I hook up to my 802.11 G, I get 1.5 megabits per second. [measured the download speeds using PCpitstop.com] Also -- like its predecessor, the 8125 -- the device perfectly synchronizes wirelessly with my office exchange server with true push e-mail, contacts and tasks. That's all really cool and spectacularly useful.

Device construction is a little bit flimsy. I'm not convinced it's going to last as long as my Treo 650 did. But we'll see.

But here are a couple of real problems I'm having. I am a diehard user of audible.com. I get the Wall Street Journal downloaded over the air at night. I listen to it first thing in the morning on my commute. I also have a bunch of books and other periodicals that I listen to. Audible always worked perfectly on the Treo 650 and worked very well on the 8125. However, there appears to be an incompatibility between the TyTN and the audible player.

It takes as much as two minutes (really, literally) to load the audible player and once it is loaded, it can take as much as another two minutes to browse my downloaded files. This makes audible almost useless on theTyTN unless I am on a very long trip and willing to put up with the slow speed. Also, the SPB software runs so slowly on the device that I have had to remove it. SDB backup is fine, but their weather program, their time program, their diary and the SPB Pocket program essentially do not run TyTN.

I suspect that there is some incompatibility problem withthe 400 MHz Samsung processor. But obviously I'm not sure that that's what the problem is

Has anybody else encountered anything like this? If so, have you found a fix? I would love to get audible.com working properly again. I can live without SPB but I would hate to live without audible.

Thanks

Posted by: aadadams

Delays for me are with iguidance, and only occur after I have all my other apps loaded. But, the launch sequence goes according to your audible launch. I have licenses for SPB and SBSH and I alternate as I change devices and the need arises. Does this occur with and without your apps loaded. I did a hard reset and only loaded iguidance. The program launched almost instantly everytime I launched it from main memory and storage card. After loading all my other software the slowdowns occur. I have not solved it. I am hoping the the impending ROM release will remedy our issues.

What's the big deal waiting for an updated Wizard with HSPDA if you're not even going to use it? Just buy an 8125!

For example, the student/resident lounge in most of my hospitals have wi-fi (as well as most of the medical school areas), but we don't even get a GSM or data signal within some of the buildings. That leaves wi-fi as our only choice (except for Verizon users).

I agree...I long for the same build quality and materials used in my HTC Magician (i-mate JAM)!

I am running SPB Pocket Plus with no noticible slowdown. I had the Omega's Journal Bar and Battery Bar running on my JAM, but it totally crashed on my TyTN...(different versions of WM might be to blame).

I have never tried to run audible, but I will give it a go and see if it runs on my unit with the SPB and Sprite Backup software as well

I tried out the 8125 for a couple weeks. It just wasn't cutting it. Good device overall, but the processor in general use just seemed too sluggish. I use quite a few medical programs as well, and they just didn't run that well (compared to my old iPaq PPC). I'm hoping that the processor upgrade will help out a lot, and I think it will. I also think that overall, the 8525 is a pretty solid improvement over the 8125. The extra buttons and the jogdial are almost worth upgrading for by themselves. Add the processor upgrade, and it's a MUCH better device. The only advantage the 8525 doesn't have over its predecessor is the memory card. I'm much rather use the cheaper, larger capacity MiniSD over the MicroSD, but it's definitely not a dealbreaker.

And just because I'm not willing to shell out $40 for a wireless data plan for the device right now, it doesn't mean I'm not going to take advantage of it in the future. I'd like to have the option to use it if I need it, or have access to it. Right now, HSDPA won't be available in my area for a few more months, and even then, I probably won't get a signal within some of the hospitals. Later on, who knows? I'd just like to get the "better" device, and if it has better high speed data potential, then that's just a bonus for me.

Of course, I'm still not 100% sold on the 8525, and and I might just get the 3125 and a Dell Axim 51v. That'll take care of my communication & wifi needs, but unfortunately, I'll lose out on having the QWERTY keyboard. Hmmmm...

That's the biggie. Once you go qwerty there's no going back. However, after I upgrade to the 8525, I might get the 3125 as well and switch between the two devices. That is if I can get the 3125 at the 'upgrade' price through premiere as well.

Please give audible.com a try. It's an important application to me -- and I suspect you'll enjoy it too. They have a "try before you buy" policy so you can give it a one-month shot and download as many as two books.

I just did a hardware reset on my TyTN. After a hardware reset, it took two minutes and 15 seconds to load the audible player. It took about three seconds to load on the 8125 and it was almost instant on the Palm 650.

I suspect that there is a hardware incompatibility with the Samsung 400 MHz chip or with the HTC implementation of Windows Mobile 5. Of course, it's also possible that the audible player is ill behaved and that previous implementations of WM5 didn't expose that bad behavior.

Please let me know what you think.

just came back from data training... i will post pictures of the 8525 when i get home.

Posted by: RF9

In this data training, did they speculate on when the 8525 will be out?
Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Posted by: KingJ2002

Late september in 3G markets.

the phone is alot further than people think... playing with the phone it definitely alot faster and the camera is definitely alot better.

the PTT button is there but the feature isnt available yet. and it's kind of cool... the 8525 feels like the "8125 pt. 2" not a really big leap aside from the 3G usage... it's more like what the 8125 should have been.

Thanks for the info. Looking forward to it (obsessively.)

Posted by: charlie8525

Just out of curiosity does anybody know how long it took for the 3125 to go from testing to approved to released?

Trying to figure out how much time left until i ican get my hands on the 8525

Posted by: RF9

I think the 3125 is a bad example. I think it came out 3-4 months after it was supposed to due to some (I don't know what) delay.

I hope not.. I hope it will offer more of a step up than the Hermes to the 8125. Make it a good deal thinner, VGA, and just that would make it a jump for me.

does anyone knows if te cingular 8525 is going to look like the Tytn or the Dopod version/O2 trion???

O2 Trion.. There are some pictures of it floating around here..

I don't think so. I don't like that. The dial pad is nice to make it phone-like, but this device looks like it'll be larger, and there's no d-pad... something I think is essential. I prefer the 8525/TyTn as it is.
Doh. I just read it and it says it's SMALLER. You're kidding me. OK now I like it. Odd keyboard, though.

Posted by: Jakaroe808

Yeah.. I just saw this over in another thread.. No Dpad would be hard to get used to but others have reported this thing running the Smartphone OS even though it clearly shows PPC in the renders. Not sure though..

Late September is close enough for me to wait.

Sometimes it is nice living in a big market.

Don't know if others have seen this site http://wiki.xda-developers.com/inde...name=HTC_Hermes

While we wait for the 8525 to be released this site has a lot of developer info on the device...

Sorry for the wait guys... here are the pics of the 8525 i took... the rep said it was ok so I went ahead.

What You Dont See:

- On the side they removed the speaker holes
- On the top of the phone there are no buttons
- On the left there is a trackwheel like the Motorola Q, a PTT button, a "ok" button, and a Micro SD slot (thats right... no more Mini SD)
- On the right there is the power button, communication button, voice dialing (i think), and the camera button
- on the bottom of the phone there is the headphone jack, infared port, a switch to open up the back lid, stylus hole (which resembles a treo because of the countoured shape, and a extra hole for a keychain or one of those charms girls like to put on their phones, and an extra hole i cant remember what it does
- the battery is huge... almost as long as the phone itself.

thats all i can remember for now. (Sorry for no comparison shots... i was using the 8125 to take these pics... but take my word for it... they are roughly the same size but the 8525 feels alot heavier)

as for the phone in non 3G markets. I doubt you'll see it until 3G launches in the area. for example the 3G LG flip that resembles the RAZR is available for people in new jersey right now but not in L.A... we wont see the phone until the holidays or whever they decide to roll it out here.

Posted by: DjPiLL

I am so pumped for this phone. Hopefully it comes out before the 30th.

couple of questions,
will the ptt be compatable with the 2g phones which are out right now? how did it feel in your hands? does it look like we will see the phone in sep/oct? or at the end of the year?

I dont know definitely since the feature wasnt available when you press the button but i would assume so, the phone feels great in hand compared to the 8125. the contoured shape makes it easy to grip and using the trackwheel takes some getting used to since its on the opposite side of the phone (lefties should love it). The phone should definitely come out this month or first week next month if there is any delay for 3G markets. I have no idea about non 3G markets.

just talking to the rep it seems like cingular is about to replace 70 percent of the phones they have for sale with 3G ready ones.

new treo's and a new data card in october and more pda's from samsung, blackberry, and htc between now and december. Im excited because so far all the phones are really unique and gives people more variety than whats out right now.

do you know which other htc units are going to be introduced on cingular? also, i know in san diego there is 3g coverage, suppose i drive from LA to SD, do you think i will be able to pick up a unit without signing a new contract? also, did you get any info on the new palm units for cingular?

Awesome KingJ2002 for getting the scoop and some real pictures of the 8525. Can't wait for this phone to get released. The black look's awesome. Hopefully this gets released in the next couple of weeks ..

Titts... That is another great look.. KingJ2002 you said the 8525 is roughly the same size. Others have said it feels a bit thinner in the hand. Would you agree with that?

Posted by: mush10

Has anyone hear had both the Nokia 6682 and the 8125? How do they compare in size? I was staying away from the 8125 because it looks a little bulky, but seeing the picure of the 8525 in hand they look similar. Also, how has the RF been on the 8125 and should we expect the same on the 8525.

Posted by: txschafers

I am curious about the caps and number lock. Does the 8525 not have the indicator on screen that tells you when one or the other is enabled? I know with the 8125 you had to load a hack for that.

Also, I searched, obviously not that well, but is this phone definately HSPDA or is it only UMTS? and does it support Wifi.

If you fly with T9? Then no. I think you'd be fine with a non-qwerty phone. I've been carrying around Treos for the last 3 years and I was never that great with T9, especially when it came to symbols/characters like when typing a URL. I check out phones in th store occasionally and try to type a URL in to the web browser. After 2 minutes of trying to get a URL type I get frustrated.
I also find it way easier to text message on the Treo than I ever did on a phone. But there are times when I wish I had a normal small phone.

I might pick up a 3125 in addition to a 8525. The 8525 would be my main, does-everything device. But the 3125 would be my light phone that still has the calendar, contacts, and will run my favorate WM apps (for weekends, going out, or whatever I'm doing where I don't want to look like a dweeb.)

If you fly with T9, then it's just a matter of if you can give up the added features of a QWERTY PDA (larger/higher res screen, wifi, 3G, WM5 phone ed. instead of smartphone ed., faster processor) to gain the size and sleekness of a smaller phone. Most people can.

This thing is a re-branded TyTn, and the TyTn definitely has HSDPA and WiFi. The specs I've seen on the 8525 back that up. So Yes to both.

I love the pics and I'm beyond stoked to hear that it's coming out in the next 2-3 weeks. I can wait that long.

HTC = No clue...s620/Excalibur? S310? P3600? P3300?
Blackberry = Dunno...Pearl/8100??
Samsung = i607! (ooh I hope)

i belive your are right on the palm guesses. the 750 is already testing and the 670 is supposed to be a gsm device. the samsung we have heard around here that it will be with cingular. if more htc devices hit cingular it would be awesome!

I was really impressed with the look of that ASUS that popped up a few weeks ago.. I had really hoped we would be seeing that from the HTC but hopefully they will design something similar in the Harlad.

Edit.. Sorry I guess this was a bit random.

As far as the Treos are concerned, yes the 750 running WM is 3G. The 670 (which I believe will be called the 680) runs the Palm OS which (from what I read) is not capable of doing UMTS.

Posted by: VerizonGuy1

yea, that is right. i can't remember where, but i remember reading before that palm os isn't capable of anything above edge at this point until "ALP" comes out.

well... a little. the phone has a rubber stripe around it plus with a more rounded shape it feels easier to grip. but it's definitely bulkier in terms of weight.

one more tidbit...

the camera on the phone is great! it doesnt chug like the 8125.... im thinking it's due to the processor speed. the 8525 outdoes the 8125 in everyway... i wouldnt be surprised if the 8125 is EOL status when the 8525 is released. Then again we still sell 7290's

Our corporate guy said it will drop in 2 weeks....can you confirm this? Like everyone else I am anxious to get my hand son this phone.

How will I survive another 15 days = 15*24 hrs = 15*24*60 mins = 15*24*60*60 secs ...

Posted by: Naveen

@ kingj2002,
what was the meeting that you went to? a meeting on the introduction of the unit? or just a general presentation? also, was the software load final on the 8525 unit that you looked at?

Posted by: KingJ2002

just a regular data training course.

what cingular does for it's employees is have mandatory training courses to educate us on upcoming products or services. most of them we can on our computers... some of them we actually have to attend a class.

data training courses are cool because the instructors always brings the latest phones... whether they are retail or in testing... and in some cases we are allowed to take home phones to use.

in this case... i wasnt able to take it home.

I had the Nokia 6682 before I bought the 8125. I really enjoyed it, but I enjoy the 8125 much more especially for functionality. They are pretty equal in size & I like the buttons better on the 8125. As for the screen size, I think the 8125's is a little larger, plus I use the landscape function a lot too, which the Nokia didn't have.

I've heard its retailing at 599.99 and 399.99 on 2 year contract.

Can you explain that? I pretty sure I am getting it when it comes out. Maevro, how has your RF experience been with the 8125. I know it probably means nothing, but I am curious.

its when you pull out the keyboard and the screen turns

Exactly.

As for the RF, I have had no problems. I always thought it wa Cingular, but the 8125 works great with a connection, something that any motorola never did.

I am very excited about this phone. I check this thread around four times a day.

Can anyone confirm this phone coming out on the 25th?

Posted by: charlie8525

I think that the 25th has been pushed back by cingular. I was at the cingular store this weekend and i saw a spreadsheet they had about release dates of the various new phones. The 8525 used to be the 25th and now it shows Oct 3rd. They have scheduled tested to be completed by the 19th of September. We compared the printed release date of the 3125 with the actual date and the actual date was 1 week later....So we can only hope that the 8525 will be released on Oct 3rd but maybe a week or so later.

so you have the same prblem i do?!?

Posted by: FormulaNY

OK OK i too check this forum out once a day for any news about this phone. Ive been out of contract for almost 1 year but cingular will have me again under contract when this phone comes out.

Posted by: gravejoker

My contract's getting over in Nov ... but I am ready to sacrifice my freedom for the TyTN if Cingular releases it in Sep ..

Posted by: Jakaroe808

I'm going to resign for the discount.. I dont think I'm going anywhere anyway and if I really want out I dont mind paying the early termination fee.. I know I have already saved more money on devices by resigning than it would cost to opt-out.

Posted by: benfica88

so instead of the obligatory and abused date question, anyone have any official prices sheet?

Posted by: penguinsfan

Hello, my name is PenguinsFan, and I'm a PPC phone addict. It all started with my SX56 back in 2003. A brickly beast, indeed, but steadfastly reliable. Then, in February 2006, I made the lover's leap to the Cingular 8125. It was a wildly romantic, joyful, and EDGE-filled two months. Until the touchscreen went completely dead to my loving touch. It was a gradual degradation to the point where I could not tap anywhere in the middle of the screen for a one inch diameter. I sent it back to Cingular (got a full refund despite being past the 30-day return period) and got a cheapo V557 to tide me over until the expected June release of the HP IPaq hw6940, which of course still hasn't dropped.

I've since given up lusting for the ever-elusive 6940 and now reserve my wet dreams strictly for the 8525. I originally liked the flip-up screen shield on the 6940 -- something the 8125 and 8525 don't have. But a good bustier does not a good phone make.

So, on to my questions:
(1) Did anyone else have the screen degradation problem on the 8125?
(2) Have there been any screen problems reported on the 8525 in its testing phase?

And finally, as for the 6940, I shudder to think about Cingular's delays with it and how long we will wait for the dreamy 8525. Their customer service is great, but it seems to take forever for them to release phones! Certain parts of me are turning blue with anticipation, if you know what I mean...

So until the 8525 drops, I'm doomed to check this page incessantly. Ho hum.

Please be Oct. 2... please be Oct. 2... please be Oct. 2.............

I can only speak for my 8125 and what I have heard about the Hermes/Tytn.. I have not had any screen issues and have not seen your particular problem posted before.. You could have had your 8125 replaced with a new unit and chances are you would not have had the same problem. As for the 8525, I'm not sure anyone really knows yet what, if any, "Tytn issues" it has. The Tytn seemed to suffer a few major problems on it original release, all of which I believe have been worked out. Alignment issues, and a screen connection problem.. ?? I would hope that Cingular will have all the bugs squashed.. That is the point of the testing phase..

Posted by: mush10

Is it easy to browse the web without the keyboard open on the 8125?

Posted by: Jakaroe808

Yeah.. I usually do most of my browsing with it closed unless I know I'm going to be entering text (emails, and things like that) Most of the sites I'm on look/read better then in portrait mode IMHO..

Posted by: pgray007

Does anyone with the TynTyn or 8525 know if it suffers from the "GSM dropout" problem of the 8125 with the new firmware? Basically the 8125 completely resets the radios if you have an application try and use the GPRS/EDGE connection while you're on a call. Happens with PocketWeather and several of the messaging programs. If you've experienced it you know what I'm talking about. You hear a click, then the radio goes into searching mode.

I'll be absolutely shocked if the 8525 is available in September. I think even October is unlikely with the way Cingular has been launching new products of late...

I hope I'm wrong, but it wouldn't be smart to bet against me...

Posted by: gravejoker

Why cant you guys be a little optimistic?

Posted by: goestoeleven

Just being REALISTIC and based on experience. I got burned extremely badly while waiting for Cingular to launch the 6925. It's actually HP/Cingular's fault that I'm a TyTN owner, but their bumbling turned out to be the best phone-luck I've ever had.

You can sit and wait for an indeterminate period of time (and maybe save some $$), or you can get what you want right now.

The fact that you read this board says you care about this stuff and want to be an early adopter... so what are you waiting for? It's only money...

Yes, it's only money. I will just pick a few leaves off my money tree.

Cuinsider just said they just got the "two week notice" on the release of the Treo 750W in the Treo 750W thread. This goes along with what KingJ2002 was saying about a lot of new phones coming out around the end of the month (a week later for the 8525.) I'm getting excited.

goestoeleven, its not about money. I am holding back due to the screen alignment issue. I would have bot the TyTN a month back, but according to some posts it is still appearing in the newer devices .. you cant imagine how hard it is more me to control myself right now .. I just want to take a chance with that kindda of money

If I buy the handset from Cingular, they will support it for a year instead of the resellers supporting it at their whim (granted some of them are good but they still have their limitations). Will probably wait until end of Sep .. if the 8525 is not released .. I will take the plunge ..

I admire your patience... I hope it pays off!

You still think it will be in Q1 07? Optimistic? I thought I was being realistic....

Posted by: jayman978

Hey Guys, I just got off the phone with a tech in the Data group at cingular. After he finished helping me with my problem with my 8125 I asked him about the 8525. I just got my 8125 two weeks ago so I asked him to give me some kind of idea if I returned my 8125 how long I would have to wait for the 8525. After him going through the whole, "they tell us stuff but I can't tell you" bit I asked, "Will I have to be without a phone for months?" He replied, "I would take the S off of that M word." He strongly suggested I return my phone before my 30days is up because I would not have to be without a device for long. Take that as you will.

My corp rep said about the same thing. However, they said the 8525 was going to drop the end of September.

Another confirmation about the end-September release date for the 8525 .. whoooooooooohooooooo

Now all we need is for Engadget to post on their site, quoting this thread as the source. Then someone picks up the engadget post and posts about it to this thread as another confirmation.

not for the palm 750...vodafone in Europe has a contract of exclusivity...Im guessing for at least 3 -4 months...and they still didn't ship the phone in those country ...so you are looking more like beginning of next year for US

The exclusivity is for Europe only and does not cover the US. The US version of the 750 will be locked. You will not see an unlocked version on the Palm site or anywhere else until the exclusivity runs out for Vodafone. I was told 4Q06 for the Treo but that the 8525 was going to be the first out of the gate between the two.

What I'm going with are the posts that say the 8525 is delayed by 1 week (to Oct 2) and the post that said "Oct 5." I don't know if everyone else is with me here, but it seems likely that it will be that week.

shhuuuussshhhhhh ... The TyTN gods will get angry if you talk about any other phones ...

Posted by: maevro

I can live with a n early October 8525 release date because that is pretty soon. What worries me is how many will be shipped. When I went to get my 8125 early this year, there was a national backorder according to Cingular. I went to every store here in NYC & finally found a store that had one.

As for signing a new 2 year contract, I don't mind. I don't see myself leaving Cingular anytime soon & if I do? Big deal, ill pay the $175. My bills are $109 a month anyway, so that's not too much more & I drop hundreds on the new phones I get.

I have not bought a phone with activation from cingular in so long that they have me up for a free upgrade, even though I have gone through 7 phones in the past 10 months.

Earlier in this thread I mentioned that in the PPC forum a guys said that a store rep told him they were being stocked (in the warehouse.) This was like a week ago. That's why I've been fully believing everyone who says early Oct.
That's good. It means they'll have enough to fill orders at least for the first few days. I hope it's on the premiere site day 1.

(T-1) days

Posted by: SrchingForSignl

FWIW, I called a Cingular store in San Francisco this afternoon to see what a 3g market had to say (I live in Deepholebuttyank, CA)

Me: I have it on divine authority that you'll have the 8525 in the next two to three weeks.
Rep: Oh.
Me: So... does that sound about right?
Rep: Yep.
Me: So, you know about the phone, then... (?)
Rep: Yep.
Me: Can you save on for me?
Rep: Nope.
Me: Come on.
Rep: First come, first served.
Me: I'll show you pictures of my wife.
Rep: Naked pictures?
Me: Yes, the pictures will be naked.
Rep: How about your wife?
Me: How about her?
Rep: Is she naked?
Me: I hope not, the contractors are at home working on our new bathroom. So, you won't save a phone for me?
Rep: No.
Me: Man, you guys are HARD on a fella'...

So what it all means is that there's one more splotch of evidence that the phone will drop soon.

BTW, all you "Q1, 2007 earliest" glass-half-emptiers would be morally remiss to purchase this phone before January. You Charlie Browns must be punished for your abject pessimism.

Another awesome post sir!! 2 thumbs up ... You are the lord ..

Posted by: zrex

This is getting almost as bad as buying a new car. Not only do you have to choose which one, you then have to wait until it is released. My treo 650 is held together with pencil lead and glue. Most of the screws have dissappeared. Almost bought a 700p at the verizon store today as I have always been a Palm man (that sounds bad), but the 8525 facinates me and I am interested in trying a winmob device. I cannot wait much longer.

Posted by: folsomparty

So my 2yr contract is expiring soon so I went to the Cingular store today to look for a new phone. The 8125 caught my eye. I've never had a pocket pc before, but could really benefit by being able to check email on the go. I was sold when the guy said it was wi-fi was integrated. I can just stick with a voice plan for now and stop by one of the many, many free hotspots in the area and check email. Then the dude says that I'll incurr usage charges if I don't have a data plan. Huh? I told him wi-fi is free. "Doesn't matter", he says. So I ask him, "how can Cingular charge me for data that they're not providing me?" He didn't have a good answer, but insisted I'd be charged....even if I used my own wi-fi network at home!!! So I told him to forget it and left.

Went home to find answers on the internet and found this great thread. Glad I held off as now I want the new 8525 and will wait patiently for it to arrive. Anyway, is that true about being charged for wi-fi? Just doesn't make sense to me. Am I missing something? Thanks, Brian.

Posted by: gravejoker

Good decision to wait for the 8525 ..

IMO .. the store guys dont know swat or are always out to cheat people ..

And, YES, you shouldnt be charged as long as you are using free wi-fi to browse the internet and check your emails and not GPRS/Edge/3G !!

Unless I am missing something too ..

Posted by: RF9

No, that's totally false. If you use bluetooth or Wifi to access the internet you aren't even using Cingular's network. Not only will they not charge you, but they have no way of knowing you're even using the internet. Trust me I know what I'm talking about.
You can't blame the store guy for not knowing what he's talking about.
Also. Just to add, if you Google search on "Free WiFi" (or "Free Wi-Fi") and you'll find web sites that list all of the free wifi hot spots in your area. Free is good! Cha-ching!

Thanks! I figured the guy didn't know what he was talking about. Wouldn't surprise me if Cingular trains them to say that in order to sell more data plans. I'll probably add a data plan at some point if I use it enough, but just nice to be able save the $$ for now yet still have wi-fi available. The more I read about the 8525 the more anxious I am to get it! I would've considered a Treo, but, alas, no wi-fi. If I buy the 8525 over the internet is activating it as easy and just taking the sim card out of my current phone (a pos motorola v551) and putting it into the new one? Or is this something I should have the Cingular store do? I really don't like that place.

Posted by: RF9

Just take the SIM out and put it in the 8525. That's the whole point of the SIM, to allow you to transfer your line/service from phone to phone without calling the darn phone company.
The caveat is 3G data. You may or may not need the latest SIM to get UMTS/HSDPA (it'll have the 3G stamped on the SIM.) You might also have to have them add a (free) feature called "UMTS capable" to your plan.
Both of these "caveats" have been debated. It has been proven that in some markets neither is necessary, while some say it may be necessary in others.

Don't stress about them now. Just understand where to start if 3G doesn't work.
The 8525 will come with a new SIM. If you want you can just call Cingular and have them transfer your service to the new SIM, or save it for another day and just use your existing SIM.

Just to be clear, you can just keep using your own SIM.

Oh yeah. Almost forgot. Lack of WiFi is the one deal breaker for me with the Treo. I'm even willing to take the 240x240 res square screen, but I need my WiFi. It's this reason I'm toying with the idea of the Samsung i607. Similar form factor as the Treo, has all the features I want. But it's smartphone OS and I think it's going to be too big (flat, but big.) I don't think it'll fit in my pocket well.

Hello 8525!

Hello 8525!

i think the lack of wi fi will be a deal breaker for many. also, as i have read through some of the posts of the treo 750v, i kind of ask myself what is the reason for me wanting to upgrade to a 750 from a 650?

As for why 650 to 750W?
Two reasons:
Palm OS to Windows Mobile 5.
EDGE data speed to HSDPA data speed.
For me, my upgrade from the 650 to the 8525 will be for:
WM5, HSDPA, Bluetooth 2.0 (A2DP), WiFi, and faster processor (Treo 650 lags.) Am I forgetting anything?

i think if the hp and the 8525 show up at the same time as the 750, the 750 will have its work cut out for it. all three units are wm 5.0. the 8525 has hsdpa, ptt, and a bigger screen. the hp will have wifi that palm will not offer. just my two cents

Ok, so I've been reading all these posts and seeing everyone here getting totally loopy about the 8525, and I can see why. I have been wanting a Tytn for a few weeks now, but now I'm wondering if I should hold off for the 8525. I see that most of you are opting for the 8525 over the Tytn due to Cingular's support. I'm on the old AT&T plan (Cingular Blue) so I have a feeling that I won't benefit from waiting. If I did get a 8525 from Cingular, they'd want me to change to a Cingular plan, right? I definitely won't be doing that. So my question is...Is there any reason that I should be waiting for the 8525, or should I just get the Tytn?

Assuming that Cingular enables HSDPA on the 750.

Dude, offtopic, why did you change from taylorh to RF9?

I think you can still get a phone from Cingular without getting a new plan/contract. You would just be paying some crazy price.

I can think of two reasons to go with the 8525 vs the Tytn. The primary one is price, about $850 for a Tytn and maybe half that for a 8525, if you go with a Cingular plan. The second reason is Cingular service and technical help. I've had fairly good luck with Cingular help, others may not have. I guess it depends on how well you trust the dealer you buy your Tytn from.

As for staying with the Cingular Blue plan, from what I've read elsewhere, the Cingular name is going away and sometime after the begining of next year, we'll all be AT&T again. So it may not matter if you have a Blue or Orange plan. Personally, I hope the rumor is just that. AT&T has a habit of buying companies, keeping the name for a few years, then changing them to the AT&T name and ruining them.

You're a bit off on the prices: you can get an unlocked TyTN for around $700.

My prediction on the locked 8525 is for an initial price of $499 - $599 (we'll see if I win on the Price is Right) and a 2-year contract.

Minor correction .. you can actually get a TyTN around USD700 from some very reputed resellers .. but yeah .. I have heard rumors ranging from 400 to 600 for the 8525. So, there will definitely be a price diff.

Happens with PocketWeather and several of the messaging programs. If you've experienced it you know what I'm talking about. You hear a click, then the radio goes into searching mode.

Just saw a thread on this on XDA Developers that has a registry tweak for this.

WOW
that price seems a bit high for the average user like myself.
Granted I'm dying to get UMTS and the upgrades the 8525 offers but I will not paying that much for a phone.
I would think it will be not more then $100 over the price of the 8125.
If it is $499 to $599 I will just stay with my 8125 for now until the price drops or 3g is totally available in my Philly / S. Jersey area.

Our corp discount, with no contract term, should price the 8525 between $260 and $300. The 750 will be about the same or a little lower.

Posted by: mush10

$260 - $300 seems pretty low, but would love it to be there. I have a feeling I will be paying whatever they tell me to get this phone.

A side question for 8125 users. Can you get good games for them? I know it is not the most important thing, but I enjoy a good oldschool game, like PACMAN or whatever. I just found out my 6682 can support old NES games, any chance these phones will do the same.

When I first signed up here I was just a lookie-loo. It turns out I end up posting on her a lot. I just wasnt comfortable using my real name so openly. Not trying to hide anything. As for why "RF9" just because it's short and I have no creativity to come up with a better one.

Instead of all of this speculating, can't one of you Cingular guys get in to the system and find out what the price is going to be?
I read earlier in this thread "$50 more than the 8125," but that sounds too low.

Too good to be true (8125 is just 249 right now). I will be really happy if I can get it around 400.

I actually think its the opposite problem. I think if the 3 phones release close to each other (6915, 8525, 750) then the 8525 and 750 will be the 2 most successful winners. Don't count out the name recognition of Palm. Like I said before, while both the 6915 and 8525 have "better" specs on paper Palm has huge name recognition and a huge install base of 600, 650 and 700 units all with potential upgrade

The 8525 has a large install base and is still currently on Cingular shelves to that will help that device. Also, if Cingular really starts pushing 3G as they continue their roll out, that will put the 6915 at a big disadvantage to the other two.

just my .02

That's exactly what I was expecting. Though I was hoping $400.
Thanks!
Edit: Oh Poo! Mail-in rebate? That sucks! It just hit me you said that. Well here's to hoping I can get that price on premiere without the mail-in rebate.
So it's actually $500 until you get a $50 check a few months later.

Posted by: mush10

Sounds about right to me.........two weeks and counting, hopefully
