Whats The Big Deal About SK, SK2 Or SK3?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Not here to bash or hate on the Sidekick 1,2 or 3, but I have yet to see the big deal about it and why there is such a following.

Ok, the only great thing about it is the Keyboard and swivel screen (which is patent), but so many other phones have the same or simular features. And might I add features that are not restricted by T-mobile or Danger.

My W550i can do everything that the Sidekick 2 or 3 can plus more. And the W550i is not even the most top of the line phone and cost less than sidekick.

I own a sidekick 2 for one reason only. Web access. I bought it when it first came out. Thats because T-moible at the time was the only provider that offered Unlimited web access which I needed. (under the sidekick plan). Now I use Cingular unlimited plan (cheaper than t-mobile plan) and Web access and messages ETC: is much better on other devices. (ie. W550i)

Anyway, I have become use to typing with a regular phone keypad as fast as I use to type using the Sidekick keyboard.

I personally think this will be the last Sidekick, as the future is in harddrive phones. (ie: the 4gb Nokia, forgot model #)

But the W550i doesnt have a QWERTY board

or a 2.6/2.8 inch screen (:

Or Push Email, and the BEST Instant Messenger Client out to date, nothing comes close.

Other then email, instant messaging and the keyboard there is absolutely nothing that make this phone better than anything on the market.

Posted by: Newey01

But that does make it better, since no other phone has a great IM service like the sidekick.

That makes absolutely NO sense whatsoever.

MDA is the greatest phone i have ever had the pleasure to be around. yes i am an ex sidekick user.

Posted by: Japrod

Im an ex MDA user and now a SK3 user. And I am completly happy with it. MDA was wayyyy toooooooo slow and it had terrible reception in my area.

I put the Sidekick in the same category as the iPod. It has a very user friendly interface. What it does, it does well and it's a trendy device to have, especially if you're teenager or in your 20s.

Also the Sidekick plan gives you unlimited email, text messaging, instant messaging and internet for $30/month. I don't think any other plans comes close to that. For a teenager or college student with limited funds, that's a big deal.

There are more versatile devices out there there but if you're looking to have access to your email and instant messaging, this seems to be the easiest to use. You could get a Windows Mobile device like the MDA or a Treo or a Blackberry but most people don't want to go through the trouble of installing and configuring additional software on their handheld. This may not be a big deal to a lot of us on HoFo because most of on here are gadget/cell phone freaks. But the average person doesn't want to deal with all the technical stuff.

Posted by: Mr Pink57

^^ you can take the Blackberry out of that since its pretty good to go when you open the box.

Cingular is cheaper, only $19.99

Posted by: SilverPenny

You can't even begin to compare the sidekick to any sony or other t9 phones. I hate arguing about which phone is better, what features it lacks, what features it exceeds, because it really goes nowhere.

my 2 cents.

Posted by: BSP

yeah thought about it. if thats all it takes to please you then thats pretty sad.

$19.99, plus a voice plan last time I checked. So $50 monthly at least.

True, but I use a GO-PHONE SIM. I choose to pay for a monthly plan because I need free nights & weekend & some talk time.

Have a phone to make, recieve and get voicemail is the most important for me.

Most Sidekick users that I know, Have another phone to use for talking. And just use sk to recieve text and surf the net. Thats what I use to do with my sk2.

isnt the $19.00 a month plan aslo limited in how much infor u can donload at a time

Pros:
IM client...it's the best hands down...so good that I was on it all the time and failed out of college haha jk...
text messaging is also great
the flip screen looks cool
keyboard is great
OS is pretty stable

Cons:
email maxes out at 6mb, so even if it's push it's worthless for business use
PDA and multimedia functions are lacking
web browser is slow compared to EVDO phones available
Danger servers lag a lot
etc.

Im trying to find where Cingular offers push email for 19.99 on their website...

SKs have a great IM client & keyboard. That's about the only thing that makes them stand out. The email app is okay, nothing TOO special, and they only give you 6 megs of storage. The text messaging is nothing to crow about either, thanks to TMo there's still no MMS. I guess the screen is cool, but its also a weak spot & prone to problems.

So basically, unless you're a hardcore IMer, there is really nothing special about Sidekicks. Everything the device does can be duplicated on other devices. Don't get me wrong- SKs are great for what they do but their popularity is mainly due to pure hype & the "cool" factor. if it really was the "ultimate communication device" like the ads say, every SK forum would not be filled with dissatisfied owners complaining about it & it would not have so many limitations.

I'm an ex sidekicker, as if you couldn't tell. SKs are fine if its all you need, but its not a real smartphone. While I liked and STILL like the device, it was just not powerful or versatile enough, and was a bit too juvenile for my tastes. I've since moved on to a Treo & have never been happier. I've been able to successfully replicate on it every feature I liked on my SK, and then some.

(now I'm waiting for all the rabid SK fans to tell me to go to hell & never post here again)

That is nice for you, but wasn't Sam K's initial point about keeping costs down for students? Meaning, overall, Cingular is not cheaper *unless* you also want to use voiceminutes - a luxury many a student may not be able to afford.

I think you are mistaken. If it is true, where at? Show me the link to the price plan.

I heard the web browser have been improved alot on the Sidekick 3.

Posted by: secrecyguy

I just went to the Cingular website.

The $19.99 plan only gives you 5mb of data which is not much.

The T-mobile plan with the Sidekick with the phone plan will be additional $19.99 unlimited data.

To match T-mobile plan, you need to pay additional $79.99 with unlimited data on Cingular.

Now that it has EDGE it's a lot better than GPRS but no way is it even close to EVDO. I was racing my Treo 700w with the SK3 yesterday and I decided it wasn't fast enough for me to go back to SKs even tho I'm addicted to AIM. Also, when Danger's servers are screwed, which happens often, you won't even be able to connect. I'm still tempted to go back for AIM, but carrying a SK3 and a Treo is way too much...

Ok so go to... JK ...

I have used plenty of PDA's and phones. For my needs now, heavy browsing light email, SMS and IM, the SK3 works for me. I don't really care about ringtones or stuff I can download on to my phone. I just like having a simple OS, that I don't need to customize too much. I don't really care for the cartoon figures on the splash screen (except for the girl, i think her bewbz are bigger on the sk3 )but I like the phone cause it does what I need it to do. I wish it was a little more professional looking and EVERY teenager that came into my store didn't have one but I guess it keeps me young at heart
