Confused on "Upgrade" procedure

I am closing in on my 18th month of service with Cingular and, for the most part, I am pleased. My wife and I both have phones, she has a junk Nokia, and I have a V557 (was V551 but did insurance claim). We are hoping to take advantage of the upgrade option next month. I have heard different processes and prices from different Cingular stores around here. Too many to list, but rest assured, there is little consistency between them. About all that I can verify is that there is an $18 fee, due to it being a new phone and having to be activated, or so they say.

My wife has her eye on a Razr, doesn't have to be the V3I or V3M. The base V3 would satisfy her. I was looking at the Rokr or maybe another mp3/itunes phone. Would it be cheaper just for us to upgrade and extend our contract, or should we just finish out our 2 years, cancel and then open a new contract?

Unless you plan on going to a dealer and you don't care about keeping your numbers the price will be the same for new or upgrades.

Go to a corp store when you are eligible and they will tell you whether or not you qualify for vip offers (which can include waived upgrade fees and bigger discounts on phones).

I know how to use P2K and MPT. I have all of my numbers written down. I am not concerned with losing any information saved on the phone.

My issue is that I was told by one Cingular rep, that if I decide to upgrade to a V3 Razr or Rokr, I would recieve a $50 discount. But, there are much better incentives on the same phone if you START a contract from scratch. So, is this all a faithful customer recieves in return for extending another 2 years? I might as well let my contract end, then walk right back in and sign up for a NEW contract.

I understand the difference between a quiosk Cingular shop in the mall and a stand-alone Cingular shop. Is this what you mean by "Dealer?" What are these VIP discounts?

Upgrade when your time comes dont wait for the contract to end.

you misunderstand; it's not a matter of losing the numbers stored on the phone but rather you and your wife's own phone numbers.

Don't forget RadioShack. Camparison shopping is your friend

Yeah, same thing. VIP offers are special offers for existing customers, they change all the time.

Visit a corporate store which you can find by using Cingular.com, you'll notice corporate stores are the ones that can take payments. Ask them to see if you're in the VIP system...
