Help! ROM probs(calling all h4x0rs)

I posted this on Treocentral.com, but have recieved no replies yet, so hopefully someone here knows what's going on here.

OK- I've read all about custom ROMs. I've researched the process and I waited till I felt completely comfortable before doing anything, and when I did start tinkering I didn't even do it to the Treo I use everyday- I first tried flashing my old "guinea pig" Treo just to ensure it would work. So I'm not technically a n00b, in a way I knew what I was doing in that I did my research and followed all the tutorials to the letter. I still managed to screw something up though, because as soon as I upload the ROM & reset the phone, it will only boot up as far as the grey Palm screen and then it'll reboot ad nauseam till I get it back to the bootloader. I've searched for answers to this problem already & have come up with nothing helpful. I've tried doing a hard reset, warm reset, zero-out reset- nothing. I've tried doing the bare minimum of alterations(only installing fat32 and FileZ), I've tried altering the ROM with Shadowmite's T650Tool & also by D/Ling a directory right from my Treo with ROMtool & messing with stuff in the folder, but no matter WHAT I do, it gets stuck in a reset loop. Unless I upload the original, unaltered ROM that I pulled from it to begin with. I'm working with a Sprint 650 with firmware version 1.12. The one I will eventually mess with IF I can ever get it to work right will also be a Sprint Treo, only with FW version 1.13a. I'm going to try running the 1.13a updater on the guinea pig & then trying everything again, and if I still have the same problem, I'm flushing the thing down the john.

What am I doing wrong? Am I missing something here? This is really p%$@ing me off & I'm about to tear my hair out. Can anyone who has actually gotten this to work please give me a complete step-by-step description of what you did, like right down to the ROM editing process? Cause following all the tutorials that I found online, even Shadowmite's, obviously isn't working. Thanks to anyone that helps me.

hey kabuki,
nonobeez answered you over at TC. he was wondering if you had removed the FatFS file to replace with the Fat32? try that out if you haven't done so...

Posted by: Kabuk1

yeah I did remove that first.

I made a bit of progress, I restored the original rom to the guinea pig & then re-downloaded it. Then I tried just adding filez & then uploaded it again & it worked fine. I'm thinking maybe I accidentally uploaded the good Treo's rom to the guinea pig last time. The good one is 1.13, the GP is 1.12. Maybe that's the problem & it'll work fine if I do everything with the good Treo.....?

ok, cool. I was reading your post at TC and you just have to use the ROMTool for the entire thing. Don't use Shadowmite's tool at all... After you mess with your ROM, take out any files you want, change out the FAT driver and add files, go back to the ROMTool and go to the Upload Tab. From there hit the Select button on the top right, click the ROM Directory, Browse for the ROM Directory you've been working on then hit select. From there it will zip the ROM and get it ready to UPload to the Treo. After that, if you're phone is already linked, click on the Upload button on the bottom left. Hopefully this helps. Let me know if you still have problems.`

OK, everything is up & running, all systems are go! I figured out the problem- I had a corrupted FAT32 file. The one I had was 50kb, and I d/led another one from TC that was 56kb & that one worked great.

I trimmed all the fat(but left Versamail cause I'm one of the 2% of Treo users who actually LIKE it, lol), took out Realplayer, ToDo, GetBC, World Clock, Welcome, and all the tips & crap. I added FAT32, FileZ, Xiino, AutoOff, RLock, SiEd(a simple text editor that I'm really works in ROM b/c I'm a writer & I use it all the time), SoundRec, PowerUp, and UnCache. Wow that's a lot, lol. I freed up 2 megs of RAM though & everything works great!

Wow, I feel so 133t now...

lol, glad that all finally worked out for ya!

One thing I didn't think about- should my battery have been fully charged when I flashed the ROM?

As long as you have enough battery power to last, let's say 20 minutes, you should be fine. It doesn't matter really how far the battery's been charged, as long as there's enough power to last during the flash. Now if you lost power during the flash, then there might have been a big problem.

Oh no, I know about not turning it off during flashing, but I've heard(and I think it says this on the Palm website) that you should have it fully charged b/c if its at, say, 70% when you flash, then it'll never fully charge cause it'll think 70% is full.

Regardless if this is true or not, I think I may reflash on a full battery anyway just b/c this will forever bug me otherwise.

Always a good idea to have it fully charged but not necessary... I've flashed with 60-70% battery but always have it charging...

That doesn't sound right to me. I don't see how updating the rom would change the battery calibration, although I don't know too much about a Treo's rom so I might be wrong.

Well I'm concerned because everytime I've used the official Palm rom updates, it always tells me to make sure my battery is fully charged & plugged in, and other people have told me that they've had battery problems by not following that advice.
