Put your own ringtones on your V3C and V3M

Fyi, there is a way to add ringtones without buying them.

Step 1 - create an mp3 and try to keep the file size under 325k
Step 2 - change the file extention from mp3 to mid.
Step 3 - e-mail the file to your phone using the phones e-mail address: "your 10 digit #"@vzwpix.com
Step 4 - when the message is received on your phone, go to options and "save sound", it will ask you to give it a file name and you can call it what ever you want. NOTE, you don't have to worry about changing the file extention back to mp3, the phone will play it anyway. The sound is now saved with the rest of the ringtones that the phone came with.

Did you come up with this all by yourself ?

Posted by: iowapadresfan

Nope, though I wish I did. Found it through cdmaforums.com. My sister and I both have V3M's and it works perfectly for us.

Posted by: pistons625

there is another way with bitpim.

Posted by: iowapadresfan

There isn't another way that I've found. I spent a lot of time researching forums trying to find one. The quality isn't actually that bad, yes there is some loss of quality but not enough to really make a major difference, and I've been pretty happy with my results I have a transflash card in my V3M too but there is no other way to get the mp3s to play as ringtones. Verizon did a good job of it from happening but not a good enough job if there are ways like this to get around it. I would suppose eventually that someone may figure out a better way.

I just used MPT to transfer an MP3 to my phone (via USB cable), then I selected it has my ring tone - done.

I didn't have to rename anything or do anything beyond that. Just transfer whatever MP3 you want - at least with a V3M.

It's really that simple.

Yes, it can be done... But you do need to seem edit the phone first... And once seem edited, you can also use BitPim v9.04 (freeware) to ADD ring tones and pictures to your phone, or copy them to the PC.. Of course you have to manually configure as V3CM...

So...

HOW TO's on http://mark.cdmaforums.com = Price less

(hint... its a SEEM EDIT... seem 2742, bytes 0000, offset 6A, bit 0, check the box...)

So, total cost = $5 to $10 + taxes and some time to read carefully before attempting!!

BUT at $.25 per pix message, even for the low cost of the cable, and only FREEWARE if you use bitpim instead of MPT... If all you're doing is a hand full of ring tones, then the Email Trick is still the cheapest and easiest way to go... Especially since many have said the pix messages from the email trick is covered by their add-on messaging plans...

Well, I'm almost embarrassed to say that I used the most primative method of all, but I was in a hurry and it worked. I played the ringtones I liked on my old phone (LG VX6000) into my new Razr v3m. I had to do it several times in some cases to get a good enough copy.

And now some help needed:
1) When I turned my phone off and on again, the ringtone assignments I had made were totally messed up in a chaotic way.

2) The phone does not send non-original ringtones to my bluetooth headset. I know it's not the headset because I've tried three of them (Moto H500, H300, and Plantronics Voyager 510). The headset gets no indication at all of an incoming call when the ringtone assigned to the incoming number is not original to the phone.

I just got the V3m today and have done a lot of reading on here. I'm not a techie or phone guru like some members, but I can use a computer. Everything worked for me except the actual emailing part. I am emailing with hotmail. So do I attach the .mid file or what? When my phone got the message it was just a regular text. No "save sound" option just "save quick text." Please help, I really want this to work. Thanks.

For full details of this, including most common problems... please see Item # 6 on the HOW TO's page at http://mark.cdmaforums.com

I don't know if it's a hotmail thing or not, I use Gmail from Google. I works just like any regular e-mail where you just add the .mid as an attachment. If it doesn't seem to work with hotmail, try opening a Gmail account and do it from there. I hope it works for you.

It worked! Thanks to Iowapadresfan for posting the method, and to Mark Venture for his amazing amount of instruction and clarity. Mark, your pages are absolutely awesome! Two of the files I planned on emailing to my phone were under 325K. The rest were not, and these were unable to be received by the phone. Can I get them to be ringtones via USB or Transflash? I did read this forum:

http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=934864

which seemed to make sense. Does that work for full length songs or files that are over 325K?

Thanks again guys.

Wait.. Full length songs?? You do realize that only aprox the first 30 seconds plays, then the caller goes to voice mail, right? (even less plays if the phone is set as Vib then Ring...)

So when using as a ring tone, trim it down and re-encode other wise you are just wasting space of the phones internal memory...

As for that link, and what is described there.. I don't have a V3M, so I can't try that... I know it doesn't work for the V710 and E815, but then again.. they are slightly different... so...

If you've seem edited your phone, you can make use of MPT with the USB cable to transfer the file onto the phone that way...

I have seem edited my phone via usb cable (Razr v3c) using seem 2742, bytes 0000, offset 6A, bit 0 and am trying to use Bitpim to add mp3's to my phone ( I do not want to pay for MPT). Bitpim will not allow me to add files to the phone and everytime I try to replace a file instead (a recording that I had made earlier) I get either:

"this folder has been locked by your provider" or "The phone is not responding while transitioning mode from none to brew."

Any idea on how to fix this? Are there any other seem edits I can make to be able to add mp3s?

Based on the "folder locked..." I'll assume you got that via file system...

"phone not responding...." was that during file system or gui?

Try turning the phone off/on and rebooting the PC...

Some V3M users are seeing the "error transitioning phone" message.. but there is no 100% sure fire fix...

Yeah I know, bad word choice on my part. Let me rephrase. I have edited some of my favorite songs down into 30 second (or less) clips, but they are still over 325K. For this reason, they were not receivable by my phone via email. Does anyone know if I can make them ringtones via USB or MicroSD? I don't have MPT, just WMP10. I don't know how to seem edit either. Ignorant I know, but I've been in the stone age with the LGVX4400 for two years and just got the V3M. Big jump.

Did you try lowering the bitrate of the mp3 clips? If they're 128k, try re-encoding at 96k or less.

K, um, earlier in this thread, i pointed someone to Item # 6 on the HOW TO's page at http://mark.cdmaforums.com

If you happen to browse the page, you'll happen to see a FILE FORMATS link... have a look... it discusses the files being too big.. and suggests encoding rates...

I use 48kbit/44khz/mono, and even my 40 second ring tone is BELOW 300kbytes!!

Now, if you use WMP... it will convert to WMA which can NOT be used as ring tones...

As for putting an MP3 on the TF card... not sure about the ability to copy from the TF to the phone's memory... so you can try putting your TF card into a card reader on the PC, and give it a shot...

It all worked up to step 4. When looking in the phone's ringtones, it is not there. The ".mid" file is found only in "my sounds".

Posted by: iowapadresfan

I don't have a V3M anymore to check but I believe you should be able to go into My Sounds and set your tone as a ringtone from that folder, it will save it to your ringtones from there once you set it as a ringtone.

FYI, this doesn't seem to work with the latest software version.
