I think, Sharp made some GSM version almost similar to those phones. Check TMobile SideKick Phones, Sidekick was made by Sharp...

PHS is used outside Japan, however whether that particular phone, or any Japanese PHS phone would work outside Japan is up for speculation by myself.

I don't know... at least here in Shanghai I see a stand at the subway station that sells Willcom phones modded to work in Shanghai (flashed with firmware in Chinese). I know that they're for real because I see people waking around every so often with a Willcom phone, although that's because there's a full-scale PHS network here run by China Telecom.
