Went with cell phone in the ocean. Any chance it will come back to life?

Another 4th of july another problm with cell phone. Last year I lost my phone. This time, I went in the water with it. I know you guys will make fun of it, but I really don't care.

My question is: I have the Motorola E815. Is there any chance it will go back to working? Anything I could do to help it?

Thanks so much

Ironic considering your user name. It might work if you disassemble it and let it completely dry out. Might take a few days. Might work, might not.

good point about my username..hehe

it's all kinda rusty already...that sucks

Less of a chance if it's salt water. Salt likes to corrode electronics.

I was able to save my new motorolla nextel phone 2 years ago by taking the battery out(of course),open it up and used canned air to get all visible moisture out, still was acting up. So I then threw it in my cousins fancy clothes dryer. He has one of them front loads, wich has the shelf option to let shoes/sneakers dry with out bouncing all over the place. Needles to say,an hour later and then a cool-off and the phone worked flawlessly. Good luck.

Ocean = salt water = SOL

Salt water transfers electricity, your phone is probably dead.

I read that if it went into salt water I should have soaked it in distilled water to take the salt out. The thing is that this happened 24 hours ago and I didn't use the distilled water, so now the phone is kinda dry already. Should I put back in the water, but distilled water? Or just let it sit and completely dry?

Thanks

chances are that salt is still corroding the phone. I'd say soak it to completely get rid of any remaining salt, then let dry.

soak for how long? I just put into a bottle with distilled water

Posted by: ocelot67

I'm guessing you don't have insurance on the phone.

Posted by: skuba

Ok, I let it soak for a few minutes, like 15. Then I shook the water out and put in a ziploc bag with 2 silica gels inside. Let's see what happens. The only thing is that now there is water in the screen... let's see.

Every water transfers electricity.

take it to a cell phone shop and see if they can fix water damage but did you feel a shock when you went in the water?

Posted by: skuba

man, I was drunk, didn't feel anything

Yeah but I thought salt water is more likely to cause electronics to short circuit. Plus corrosion.

pure water ie distilled does not conduct electricity. But for salt water, the disssolved ions act as electrolytes and conduct electricity. Thats all I remember from high school chem lol.

Of course it does.... if it does't, than go into a bathtub and bring a toaster plugged on the power and see what happens...

Water can be split into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, by passing a current through it. This process is called electrolysis. Water molecules naturally dissociate into H+ and OH- ions, which are pulled toward the cathode and anode, respectively. This allows a current to flow.

Pure water has a conductance of less than 0.055 microsiemens per cm.
Even small amounts of dissolved salts or acids can raise this dramatically. Tap water conducts at about 1000 microsiemens per cm
Even leaving pure water exposed to the air allows carbon dioxide to dissolve, raising its conductance to 1 microsiemen per cm or more.

However, even 0.055 microsiemens per cm is not zero: a cubic foot of pure water has a conductance of ~1.6 microsiemens ... comparable to the conductance between your two hands ... so purifying your bath water won't help if you accidentally drop your toaster in the water while making toast in the bath!

Skuba...I don't know about salt water, but my V710 went swimming without permission in dirty fresh water.I dried it with a hair dryer and let it sit for about 3 days.I thought it was shot when after 3 days it wouldn't charge or come on.However I put the battery from my e815 in it and it works great...so I guess it just fried the battery.....may want to try different battery before you sh*t can it.
