Sanyo 8100 Link Problem

I recently bought a USB data cable from my sprint store for SANYO phones. When i plug the cable into my computer, with the 8100 attached, nothing happens. I've tried it on 3 computers all runing xp. I called sprint and the best they could give me is, because the phone is no longer activated, i cannot access because it needs internet service. The phone is no longer activated, but this makes absolutely no sense to me. Thanks for any ideas.
