Windows Live Mobile: coming soon

Interesting. As a big Messenger use, I'm really looking forward to this - the version included in WM5 is flakier than the WM2003 version as far as I'm concerned. Let's hope this one works a bit better...

Posted by: cjasus730

Why do you consider the WM5 version worse than the 2003 version?

Posted by: big4uk

I can say that Windows Live Mobile is fantastic.

As part of the BETA group i was licky enough to be able to run this software...it is great and easy to use and navigate, they have the messenger option also which works very well and the best messenging option out there at the moment. Definatley worth a look in when they release the final build.

If you want to be part of BETA cycles like this and many more, go to www.freewebs.com/smartq They are on the look out for some Q reviewers also for new software and games as they come to market.

hooray for spam!

I too am on the BETA team for Win Mobile Live BETA. One thing we have seen, and is not unexpected, is that like Pocket MSN before it, you will need a DATA acct with a TCP/IP Socket. Bad news for many TMOBILE users with just the TZONES plans (The $2.99 and $4.99 Grandfathered plans and the $5.99 TZONES and TMOBILE WEB users) I have been in discussuin with Darren A. on the team and they have been made aware of this issue and are quite interested in it. They are looking at it, but, they also state quite frankly they doubt there will be much that can be done, right away. But the fact that they are listening and responding is positive. I will also add, that this team is quick and quite on the ball. One of the best rub BETA's I have been involved with (Next to Centercode, always on top!)

I thought this may interest some becuase I had intended to post this in TMOBILE MDA/SDA Forum. Obviously some here will not be frequenting so excuse if yoiu think Im cross posting.

...............

Any updates on this. I've done extensive web searches to see if I can get more info. My biggest issue, is that this program (the beta anyhow) is exclusive to the WM5 Smartphone OS, and as far as I can tell, no one is beta testing the pocket pc version.

Whiskey, Tango........?

the beta is still "pending" on my end :\

Any word on a possible release date...or if this will even be released for pocket pc? I'd imagine that not entirely to much effort would have to go into making an OS that worked on Smartphone, work on Pocket PC...........

Posted by: TheBabySitter

Thats about the size of it. There is not a BETA at this time for the Pocket PC version of Windows Mobile 5. They do say that a few people within the BETA staff are running doctored versions on some PPC devices and something is forthcoming, but that is all we have been told. It is quite a different program with alot of more integrated features involving OUTLOOK and Windows Messenger Live for Windows XP.
Thats about the size of it.

Posted by: smokeyb111

Can you say if the e-mail, calendars, and contacts are synced via Activesync OTA? That's been something that's been NAGGING me badly! lol

Is the way the e-mail interfaces with your device any better? The outlook/hotmail I have on my ppc plain ole sucks eggs. I figure if Active Sync was involved it would get 'pushed' better.

Know what I mean?

Posted by: dwest218

I too am on the Beta and love the program. One big problem with this program is lack of storage card support. Otherwise a very functional program that mimics the desktop version very closely. I just hope they are already working on a 3g video support!

Posted by: smokeyb111

Any info on the possibility of a 'push' feature.....Is this how the mailbox is syncing now?

yeah! live msn mobile RULZ!!! that's a real step forward

Posted by: Ishimaru

MS hasn't accepted anyone into the beta from Connect, which is odd seeing as how they started nominations on the 6th of June.

Posted by: [[ Cold ]]

there's a leaked beta around...version 10.7

Posted by: Ishimaru

hmmmm i'll have to look around for that today.

yeah...it's fairly easy to find.... i just wish I could install it on my Pocket PC

Posted by: Ishimaru

fairly easy to find? i couldn't find it when i looked, though i'm at work so i can't exactly look all the places i want to. any help?

Posted by: smokeyb111

When I first found it, it was in Korean or Taiwanese or something, I had to more or less take educated guesses on where to download it.

But I just found another site in English.......................

PM me.

man did that slow my phone down...i had to uninstall it or else i couldn't use my phone shame.

Posted by: Ishimaru

WOOT!!! i finally got accepted into the beta after a month of waiting. apparently there's going to be a refresh build soon, and the "leaked" build is from a month ago, and is Beta 1.

Where do you sign up for the beta program?

You need to go register at the Microsoft CONNECT site and then it will show you what BETAs are available

Posted by: smokeyb111

Smartphone only? Or pocket PC too?

Posted by: pdazealot

No go for me there, I have barely enough Storage on the main phone memory as it is. When it can install to the SD card, and NOT eat a ton of \windows directory space in the process[don't you hate it when apps install to the SD card, but still drop massive .dll files on the phone itself? Grrrr...], I'll give it a try, but not until then.

Posted by: Ishimaru

it is NOT for PPC at the moment, but the refresh build WILL be. and from what i see, there WILL be an option to install to the Storage Card

Posted by: tradecuador

I installed the program on my SDA using the TZones-WAP access and works for a while, then stopped to work.

Really I liked the program, but some have any clue if there is a tweak to works on T-Zones connection.

if you are part of the beta, write a bug about it. i don't have t-mobile so i can't write any bugs about it.

Posted by: [[ Cold ]]

where's should i suscribe? in the connect page... and where do i go from there?

Posted by: Ishimaru

available connections, apply. it took them over a month to get them to approve me (though I'm sure it's because they had a lot of applicants as i usually get approved to all the MS betas I apply for).

Windows Live for Windows Mobile 5 devices.

i dont see it there...maybe it's closed now, gonna check again

Windows Live Mobile refresh (Latest BETA release) is now available for those in the BETA or those that were in the BETA and awaiting a release capable for use with a Windows Mobile 5 PPC devices . (Uses Touchscreen)

Per the release EMAIl (this is not secret stuff or under an NDA BTW):
The new G2 bits are here for both Smartphone and Pocket PC ! The team has made significant changes in some core areas, and while there are no UI changes, they focused on the following :
Contacts dupe detection and merge is much improved
Contacts performance is greatly improved (though dupe detection has eliminated some of the gains)
PocketPC is now supported !
Motorola Q issues have largely been addressed (there were many)

So if you were accepted and awitng the PPC version, here ya go!! Available for download at your Microsoft Connect Page. (Requires you to be signed up for Microsoft Connect and be accepted to the BETA.

For those who do not know about MSN Connect go to http://connect.microsoft.com

Posted by: dwest218

yeah I got that email today also. Any idea if they added storage card support? Unfortunately, even though I dont have any programs loaded to my device I just dont have room for this program. I could store my Internet cache to my card but I dont like the performance of IE when I apply that hack.

I wish I could try this program. I wanna see how quick you get e-mails (hotmail) and if it's like a push hotmail kinda thing when connected. I want this SOOOOO bad.

I guess the BETA is closed cause I don't see it on MSN Connect website.

Posted by: dwest218

I don't have a Hotmail account but I read somewhere that Push email is not supported even thru Hotmail. A shame really.

Posted by: smokeyb111

well essentially when I have my MSN messenger logged on and I get notification of my e-mail, that's KINDA what I mean.

I'm wondering if I'm logged on, and I get an e-mail, will the notification be instant?

Posted by: smokeyb111

Anyway to get a "peek" at the pocket pc version of this program?

Posted by: rocnyc

does anyone know when the windows live mobile is coming out?

Posted by: Ishimaru

it's still in beta 2 so i'm guessing in a few months.

Posted by: pdazealot

Since I am using this on the Qtek 8500, I can't afford the loss of 2.5mb for install. I tried it for a few days, then uninstalled it. Also, I wish it could use a proxy server and run on port 8080 like Agile. Since it can't do that, it won't work on some of my T-mobile phones. Another reason to uninstall it. So many people on Tmo have Tzones, and any good WM based IM package should work with that.

Posted by: smokeyb111

pdazealot,
I tried to pm you. your box is full.

Posted by: omarqureshi

Any news if this thing support t-mobile yet?

Posted by: Ishimaru

it will work no matter what carrier.

Posted by: omarqureshi

Well how come the it won't connect via the t-zones internet? (see the first few posts)... Unless my beta version is old.

Posted by: Ishimaru

they released a refresh of the beta, but t-mobile could also be blocking it.

Posted by: smokeyb111

Is there a timeline for how longthis thing is going to be in beta? It's been a while hasn't it?

Can this be installed on a pocket PC yet? Is it being beta tested on pocket pc as well? I was able to find the beta for download once but it only supported smartphone versions of WM5.

Posted by: gryph0n

Yes they are testing for the PPC as well. I hear that it should be live sometime next week (fingers crossed). I was going to load it up on my 3125 today, but was then informed that the server that it goes through is down. I didn't feel the need to give up MSN for something that may not work for a while. I am just patiently waiting for it to go live now...

Posted by: LIVEFRMNYC

Before I installed Windows Live BETA ........
Everything worked perfect on Imate SP5. MSN Messenger and Hotmail connected via Cingular WAP and WiFi just fine.

After I installed Windows Live BETA ..........

It didn't give me a choice to Download to my Storage Card. (I heard there is a program that can force installs to Storage.)

It DID NOT CONNECT at all. Maybe differ server or beta is somehow blocked. I couldn't find the options on how to connect. Didn't work with my WiFi either.

It Made my Storage Card into a Storage Card 2 folder. I heard about this many times before. I had to change back the folder name & delete the other, it was pain to do.
(THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THIS HAPPENED TO ME, BUT I READ ABOUT IT IN MANY FORUMS. THATS WHY I WAS ABLE TO FIGURE OUT THE PROBLEM QUICKLY).

Besides the problems that I listed above (keep in mind it's BETA), I'll have to admit that the interface looks very nice and it was very easy to switch to differ tasks, I also like the sync function. I WISH IT CONNECTED THO

UNINSTALLED ....

YEAH, EVERYTHING WORKS AGAIN!!!

I would have taken snapshots, but my e-mail and contacts were on damn near every screen.

Posted by: smokeyb111

Any updates on the PPC version of this? I found a version, but it's for smartphones only. Would like to know if anyone here is using this for PPC.

I DO realize this is a Smartphone forum....but I'd hate to start another thread on the same subject in the PPC forum.

Posted by: veblen

Can someone PM me the installer for this?

Posted by: Ishimaru

The beta is down at the moment, so NOTHING works. Don't even bother asking for any files as they will NOT work. There is a new refresh supposedly coming this or next week. Other than that, no ETA.

Posted by: smokeyb111

Hey Dark Jedi,
You on the Beta? How instantaneous is the e-mail download while connected? I notice that the E-mail on the normal client is a bit slow to update....was wondering if it was any different with this new Windows Live. To be honest that's the ONLY reason I'm so interested in it. I wish I had push for my hotmail, as it's my MAIN email addy. This is the closest I'll get to "push" connectivity for my hotmail addy on my phone.

UNLESS someone here has a another option I have'nt explored yet???? LOL

Posted by: smokeyb111

Any udpates?
GEEZ I'm doing my BEST to keep this thread alive........lol

Posted by: Ishimaru

I am on the beta, i haven't really noticed e-mail being downloaded at all, i notice it later. the refresh is better in terms of speed than the previous beta, but it's still a bit slow on my pc. there aren't any updates, and it's still down.

Posted by: smokeyb111

I went on the windows live ideas website and the new mobile messenger is noted as "coming soon"

No one here got any insider info? It's crazy how people have inside info on any and everything else but not this.

Posted by: Wireless

I can tell you this. They just released the 3rdBETA build to us on 11-8. We are just getting into testing that and there has been zero talk on release date.

Posted by: domchristopher

has anybody gotten this to work with 2003 se?

Posted by: hidden_dragon

It doesn't work on anything less than WM5.

Posted by: smokeyb111

Okay, I'm confused. The Windows Live Messenger beta that recently got released looks like it's web (wap) based.
Is this what has been in testing all along, a crappy web based version of what we already have?

Posted by: domchristopher

This works with the Motorola Q, right?

smokeyb...i hope not, it's definitely not what's in the beta product, it's a full phone based messenger tool...along w/ email that pretty much integrates into Pocket Outlook just like hotmail but it syncs contacts also.

i'm not sure what in the world they are doing w/ that web based junk...i guess it'd be nice for a non-windows phone, but still, even then, a total hassle to use or mess with.

@domchristopher, yes, should work w/ the Q.

So what's the hold up? I wanna try this on my 8525. The only reason I have BB Connect on it now is to get realtime e-mail. If I can get this program, I'd dump it in a heart beat.

Not a clue, they are definitely being as slow as possible w/ it.

As for your email issue...Windows Mobile Live doesn't seem (to me anyway) to be all that different from Pocket MSN, just a prettier face on it. In order to get the real-time email from a Hotmail/Live account, you still have to be signed into Messenger to get it. If you get booted b/c of a dropped data connection, it doesn't automatically sign you back in and you stop getting messages. I haven't left either of these running for a long period, so not sure what the true impact on battery life is, but probably hits the battery harder than Direct Push.

I'd look into a Direct Push service if you want real-time email that works and doesn't totally die after a loss of connectivity to the internet. Direct Push will pick back up after a connection is re-established. Unless I've missed something in Pocket MSN or Windows Live Mobile, they don't do that.

Chris

Posted by: smokeyb111

The only thing about Direct Push, is I can't push my hotmail. I'm able to do that now with BlackBerry COnnect.

So ironic. You'd think Microsoft would have figured out how to do it since they OWN Hotmail.

Posted by: hylton

Yea, I've been sending them emails and asking to have Direct Push Hotmail for awhile now. Still no response or indication they are going to go that route.

I have my business domains setup w/ Office Live right now, and I'm kinda waiting to see if they start adding services like Direct Push for people in Office Live. If they do, I'll stay, if not, I'll be moving to a hosted setup w/ MyHosting/Mail2Web setup next year.

Chris

Posted by: VerizonGuy1

i had mail2web setup and i wasn't that crazy about it because i couldn't hook it into my hotmail account. us blackjack users are out in the cold because we don't even have pocket msn

Posted by: ujpatel

I've been using the Windows Live Beta for almost 2 months now and I think its awesome. I get my hotmail pushed directly to my blackjack. You dont have to be logged into messenger to do this. As opposed to Pocket MSN, Windows Live has an option to push email "As items arrive" from your hotmail. Its awesome...mine sends my hotmail as soon as it is in the box. Sometimes it comes on my phone before my outlook! Great program!

Posted by: hylton

Hmmm...had not tried that, I was just operating on the basis that it looked like all the same setup as Pocket MSN. I'm gonna go change my settings and get it going. If this is the case, I'll be switching over to use my primary business email address thru Office Live. Sweet.

Thanks for the tip...

EDIT...kewl, wish i had tried that instead of assuming it was just a face life. Just tried a test email, confirmed I wasn't signed into messenger, it arrived w/in a minute or two of sending it from work.

Any idea if this is really Direct Push, or some other pseudo-Push solution. I'm gonna run it awhile and see how battery life is impacted. Have you noticed a big hit on the battery?

Chris

Posted by: ujpatel

The only problem you should experience is loss of connection to the Windows Live server every now and then. This is b/c we are using a beta version and there are a few flaws. Overall I use my hotmail as my main email source and it has done wonders over pocket msn. I get my emails on time and can send emails immediately thru my blackjack.

Posted by: hylton

Thanks, been using it w/ that feature on now since last night, emails are coming fine. Works great. I also noticed it comes right back after coming out of flight mode, or even if you force a network disconnect in Comm Manager, the connection comes right back. It'll be interested to see how it impacts my battery life, but I'll gladly give up a little to get this feature. I just hope it's true Direct Push and not something else.

After a few days, I'll check my data usage and see what it looks like, in theory, if it's direct push it shouldn't be transferring any data accept when it syncronizes.

I did notice that it syncronized last night (date last syncronized) when there was nothing to syncronize, which is odd, but it could have been a fluke. As you said, it's still a beta product.

Chris

Posted by: Jaw3000

Is it still possible to sign up for the beta? I don't see it listed on Connect any longer.

Posted by: hylton

As I've watched this more today, I'm really curious as to what all is going on w/ this app, but it's just hard to tell. I haven't received an email since this morning, which is correct (currently using it w/ an account that I don't get much on). Anyway, that message arrived right after a 'sync' occured, and my 'last sync' time didn't change, it was still prior to when the email arrived. Again, haven't gotten any emails since the one this morning. I just pulled up the UI on the phone, 'last sync' was dated just a few minutes ago.

So it seems emails come and go w/o a 'sync' occuring, but all other folders and contact changes don't get updated until an actual 'sync' occurs. And...not sure what is triggering the sync, since they seem to occur when nothing is going on, maybe the server is triggering them periodically in tandem w/ a heartbeat or something???

I also deleted a couple of messages after that one this morning came down, but those changes were not immediately posted back up to the server either, the messages were still on the server until later in the morning.

Still, not really concerned...seems to work well, battery life has been fine today...I was at 100% pulling my phone off charge at 7:30am. It's 4:30pm now and I'm at 91%. Made a few calls today, checked news, weather, web client Hotmail for another account, etc...

I think the BETA was closed awhile back, not sure, but pretty sure.

The file is all over the place though. The smartphone version is called Install_WLM.exe

I forget the PPC install filename, but it's out there too I think. For your Dash, you'd need Install_WLM.exe. Look for the November update, I think that's the latest.

I gotta somehow find the pps version. I'm running BB connect right now, and I'd like to take it off. It's okay for now, but as it stands, when I get in a 3G area, BB connect doesn't work on my device any more.

If you guys come across the PPC version. Lemme know.

I downloaded it, and I LOVE it. Although I see the obvious room for improvement, I took the prgram off my phone. The double-contacts issue annoyed the hell out of me, and I like to see better syncing with e-mail and calendar things, overall it's da shiz......

I'm going to wait until it's released in a public beta before I download again.

Posted by: VerizonGuy1

it may be a while until we see a public beta. i just went and applied yesterday a MS connect site adn it says they stop accepting applications on 4/20/07.

im not sure which version my copy is at but his thing is not reafy for primtime yet. i have to relogin a ton due to sync failures with no error message and sometimes resets my blackjack. aybody else having this many issues?

Posted by: smokeyb111

I never had that problem. Even though it'll tell me the sync isn't complete, I almost NEVER got an errors. I just wish the e-mail delivery was a little better, and the contacts did'nt duplicate everything in my contacts list.

Posted by: hylton

i haven't had that problem either, emails sync just fine...i haven't tried contacts though, only syncing email at this point.
