So I am stuck between these two phones.

Here is what i need the phone to do for me:

Calender
E-Mail
Text messages
Great Call Quality
Has to be stable

I do browse the internet casually and the wifi would be nice..

What do you guys reccomend?

Posted by: Soopafly

8700 is better for stability and call quality. 8125 can do a lot more, but the 8700 is a better device.

Posted by: edmund

^i agree. 8125 has more capability, but for the things you mentioned, the 8700 is a better device. much more stable and has better call quality.

What you described is the Blackberry in a nutshell. I love mine. Love love love it. When I was in Germany last month, it was a godsend. I don't go anywhere without the thing, even on weekends.

If you get one, as soon as you have it in your hot little hands, go to Blackberryforums.com to learn all about what you can do with that bad boy.

do i have to pay for blackberry connect if i get the phone? Is that the only way i can get e-mails on the phone?

Posted by: KlamshellKing

I just got my 8700c blackberry a couple weeks ago and have had enough time to play with it. The stability of the device is awesome. I am coming from an XV6700 PPC from Verizon and Windows Mobile 5.0 just caused so many lock ups... probably the programs I had loaded but I would have to reset at least once a day.

I use Cox for my pop3 e-mail and it polls the account every so often. What you can do is fwd ur pop to your blackberry.net address for instant "push" e-mail. I'm not sure about yahoo mail, I don't use it.

Internet browsing is ok - it took me a while to get use to the track wheel coming from a touch screen. I would like to try the Opera browser but haven't read too much on it. I hope they have a compatible version for blackberry.

Oh, and by the way, welcome to the blackberry community!

How would you guys rate the Treo 650 vs. the 8125 vs. the 8700 in terms of call quality, RF and capabilities?

If you get a Blackberry 8700c, you must get the Blackberry Personal BIS plan or if your company has a Blackberry server, you must pay for the BES plan. No data plan, no data. It's just a nice PDA with a phone built in that you can text message on.

FYI, Blackberry Connect is for devices that are not designed by RIM such as the Nokia 9300 and can only be used on those devices.

Paying for the data package is worth every stinking penny. If you're not willing or able to pay, then just forget the Blackberry right now. You effectively neuter the device by not getting the data package.

My progression in the SmartPhone/PDA world is very similar to yours. I am currently at the 8125 and I love everything about it. The problems that others may (or may not) have is that they might not have upgraded to the latest OS for the 8125 (posted by HTC - the OEM). Keep in mind that the 8700 and the 8125 are COMPLETELY 2 very differnt devices. I had a 7100g that SUCKED very badly, then I went to the Treo 650, which was only marginally better, now I have the 8125 with the upgrade and it works beautifully for me.

8125 has all of the same capabilities - including push mail plus more. Full internet browser (third party s/w - better) and direct POP3 access to email. Full PDA functionality (i.e. Syncing with PC). Video/Still camera, MiniSD Storage (I use a 2gb MiniSD). Movie playback, MP3 playback etc...

The 8125 with the Cellular Radio software upgrade (part of the OS S/W upgrade) vastly improves the call quality far far better than when I had my BB7100g. It also has built-in WiFi that can attach to a Wireless G AP.

Get the point?

Personal choice however but one that works for me.

Food for thought.

Posted by: KlamshellKing

i mean theres just so much to do with the 8125, so thats gonna make me possibly keep it. what im gonna do is get a regular phone like the w810, or nokia 6131 and keep that till the hermes comes out at a reasonable price and then buy that. because all i want is fast internet, i want it to be fast and not crash which wilol be cured by the processor.

Posted by: quillhill

The reason I went with a BB over the 8125 -- and believe me, I wanted an 8125 -- is once I played with a BB, I knew I could handle the OS. Every time I messed around with the WM5 device, I just got frustrated. And the reality is I don't need all the other media stuff. I had a media oriented phone before, the w600i, and barely used those features. I carry a Nikon digi cam with me most places and the rest I don't really need.

For me, the trade off as far as features goes was worth it because I find the device easier to use and I don't have to worry about any of the things people have posted about. It's not a perfect device, but the OP isn't looking for all the bells and whistles, so why go for them?

It's true, though, like comparing apples to oranges. They are different devices with different purposes. In the end, you have to try for yourself and see what you like best. That's what I did.

Posted by: KlamshellKing

yea i wish i could just get a bb 8700 just to try out, because right now i hate my 8125, yesterday i punched the screen (lightly) because it pisses me off so much. i thought i should get a normal phone because there more stable. but if not ill get a BB.

Posted by: KlamshellKing

but what can the BB do that the w810i cant? besides qwerty

Posted by: THETRUTH#34

How does the nokia 6682 relate in all this or the nokia 9300????

Posted by: KlamshellKing

well see the 6682 is a smartphone these are all pdas, also it has no qwert, the 9300 is retarded... it has no vibrate

That i understand, i was referring to the very 1st post on this thread. Can the 6682 do what he wants it to doalso the 9300 as another option.

Posted by: KlamshellKing

email and textmessages = need for qwerty... 6682 = no qwerty

Ok got ya, the qwerty makes it easier, but u still can perform the funtions, plus call quality and stability the 6682 probably wins out, im actually trying to familiarize myself between the 2 types of devices.

Posted by: mademan118

Wirelessly posted (HTC-8100/1.2 Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.5; Windows CE; PPC; 240x320) UP.Link/6.3.0.0.0)

so I ended up getting the 8125 because of the keyboard and the built in wifi. I have to say that this thing ROCKS! I am posting from the phone right now. I would strongly recommend it to everyone. it isn't to big or anything! hope you guys that are debating on what to get choose this phone!

I actually have all three and I would rate them as follows;

1. 8700 (best rf, most stable capabilities)
2. 8215 (not best, but more capabilities)
3. 650 (mediocre rf, VGA camera, older Bluetooth)

The 8700 has very good rf (at least in my neck of the woods) and call quality. IMHO, the 8125 is a PDA first, then phone. It has the most capabilities with the 650 running a close second.

I purchased the 8700 after owning the 8125 and 650 and haven't looked back since. As a matter of fact, I have both of them for sale. The 8700 is great.

Whoa, there, John Wayne.
QWERTY is nice, sure - I used to think it was essential, myself.
However...you'd be amazed how proficient some people are at T9, MultiTap and the like.

Hell, I typed a 2 page formal email this morning on a 7130c with SureType.

And it rox my socks

For the criteria you want to meet, OP:

You need a 8700.

End of discussion.

Yep,what he said.
But seriously, each phone has its pros and cons. The best thing is to go to a store that has them all and play for a while. The 8700 will definatly meet ur needs with a very stable patform.

Posted by: quillhill

I think the OP went and got an 8125 and unsubscribed from his own thread.
But, I bet he'll back after he's had to XBM the thing when it crashes daily.

Oh, now, I suppose I should be nice. My sister just got the CDMA version, the PPC 6700.

To each his own. Right, right, to each his own. I'm sure there are people who think I'm nuts for getting a Blackberry.

Posted by: mademan118

hey im still here.

I have not had it crash once, and if it did it was because of user error. I love this phone and i would recommend it. I played with the blackberry for about 30 minutes in the cingular store and i liked it. However i dont want to pay for BBC and i like wifi. Also i like the keyboard alot more on the 8125 then on the 8700c.

Very accurate, very good post.

We have a new Blackberry Personal E-Mail plan for $29.99 which includes unlimited data and e-mail without the firewall access (so no corporate e-mail access). It is $44.99 for the regular Blackberry plan which includes firewalled corporate access.

Overall the 8700 is a better device than the 8125 and is cheaper with (personal e-mail use) unlimited data at $29.99. The 7130 is also a very cool device, just no QWERTY keyboard but you get the awesome rf of the 8700.

Everyone knows the 7100g is trash. I thought the thread title was asking about the 8700c?

Seriously? God, I hated the keyboard on my wizard. The keys are too spread out. Too much space for my thumbs to travel. (and I have big hands and long fingers)

And before `anyone calls me nuts, obviously HTC agrees with me, as the Hermes keyboard is squeezed together.

What is the 8125 doing to cause you to get pissed off enought to hit it?

Posted by: mademan118

i find that the 8125 was a better phone then the 8700c. I am have playing with alot of the phones out now:

Palm POS: Dead platform not going to waste money on it
Palm WM5: 32mb of ram, they were nuts, sucks
BB 8700: Nice phone i just found it 'boring.' I am also not a fan of how the whole phone is controlled from the wheel. Screen was so-so and just seemed like there were not ALOT of 3PP out there.

Posted by: KlamshellKing

what about the e61, i think i may sell my 8125 for it this week

Mmmkay. Interesting observations. I'm not a fan of Palm after using a Tungsten C PDA (no multi-taksing, for one) for a year and a half and I hate stub antennae.
I'm assuming by Palm WM5 you're referring to the Treo 700w on Verizon...?
The Blackberry is certainly not a device with a ton of bells and whistles, which you never mentioned wanting in your original post. Sigh. But, there are some who don't need or use all the bells and whistles, like me, even when I have them. But there are others out there who do, and it's cool. The Blackberry in some ways is very much a niche device. It's made my life so much easier and it's really allowed me to be very mobile as far as my job goes, but not everyone needs that. As for the screen, uh, OK. To each his own, though I respectfully disagree. It's not QVGA, sure, but it's pretty darn nice. And you don't have to use the scroll wheel for everything. You can do shortcuts all over the keyboard and cut down scroll wheel use to a bare minimum with just a little reading.

All that being said, the PPC device is really nice. My sister just picked up the PPC 6700 (on Qwest) yesterday and the slide out keyboard is nice (albeit the slide was quite stiff on hers...) plus the screen is quite nice, as well. But, I dunno, I just felt the Blackberry more. Since she doesn't have any other PDA phone option, I am comfortable with her having it, besides it's a major upgrade from her 3 1/2 old Moto C343. Heh. Perhaps I'll change my mind about the PPC after having a chance to play with hers more extensively later this week.

I can safely say, at this point though, that I do not have gear envy for her PPC.

At least on Cingular we have the options of a Palm, a WM5 device or a 'Berry. Options are nice.

The 8125 phone better than the 8700?

Right.
