Attaching an external antenna to my nokia

Hi all
I'm trying to fix a solution for a friend in spain.
They have a nokia 3120 and a nokia 3510.
They live up a mountain and get a signal about 1k from where they live in one direction. Going down. And about 500m in the other direction going up.
They also very occasionally get a brief signal, usually when starting the car because they will recieve a text message but cannot make calls.
I was thinking that an external antenna attached to either a near by tree or a pole on top of the roof would solve this issue.
The only problem is attaching the external antenna to these phones and how good are external antenna and their adapters?
