WARNING: Skins and the Verizon V3C or V3M

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Because of the Verizon RED UI, the V3C and V3M from Verizon can NOT use skins...

PLEASE DO NOT TRY AN ADD SKINS TO A VERIZON V3C OR V3M!!! If you try, you will end up messing your phone up...

A potential fix is posted -> http://howardforums.com/showpost.ph...75&postcount=31

Here are the steps to what I did:
1. Install PST- Make sure to patch it with the UNI patch BEFORE you restart your computer. This is very important. If you do not do this the only PST tool that will work is the programmer. Also this stops MotoKit from working right. I cannot tell anyone where to get PST since it is warez, but if you search the internet long enough, it will turn up.
2. Install MotoKit- This one is easier to find and install- the steps and the program can be found on this site (hofo).
3. Open your P2k Software and delete the skin folder that is causing the problem, eg. I deleted the folder "Moto" because the skin I wanted to use was called Moto, and it was the cause of my trouble.
4. Run the PST programmer. When the new hardware wizard comes up, do advanced and direct it to the drivers folder of the PST install folder.
5. Once PST is installed and recognizes your phone, (this can be tested by opening a new phonebook document, and then reading from phone. If the program reads your phonebook from the phone, it is connected, if it fails it is not connected.) open MotoKit.
5. Once you change MotoKit to english, (the third text block from the left>1033 english) Go to Mobile>Control>Master Reset. This will restore the phone to factory settings. It will not delete the phone number, SEEM edits, picture, videoes, or rigntones already on the phone, however.

This should resolve the skin-to-white-screen problem.

Please post if this works so that we can spread the knowledge to others.
P.S.- Sorry for the long post, I didn't want to double.

If that doesn't work... you have no choice but to get your phone replaced... And, since "hacking" your phone voids the warranty... Verizon or Moto can refuse if they know it was because you tried to add a skin!!

NOTE: The Alltel V3C uses the standard Moto UI, and can use SKINS... So, Verizon V3C users who flashed their phones with the ALLTEL V3C firmware Can use skins.. Please see -> Wiki Guide to flashing V3c with Alltel firmware

BUT the skins for GSM Rarz's (available at MotoModders.net) are NOT the same as the skins for CDMA Rarz's... GSM RAZR skins will NOT work on the CDMA RAZR (i.e. Alltel)...

V3M users, please to NOT flash your phone with the Alltel V3C firmware, or you will basically end up with a V3C phone... (you loose the use of the TF slot, Vcast music supoort, the Verizon Music player, etc..)

I have been told that the skins found here:
http://darklodge.com/phonefiles/razr/skins/
work with the VZW v3c(flashed to Alltel of course). I have not tested this yet. I will update after I flash to Alltel and apply a skin.

Yes, those do work with the ALLTEL V3C...

Hey Mark, just curious seeing as the instructions say to use PST do you think using MSU would work also. I don't have the issue myself, but we all know what a pain it can be to get PST and MSU if a freebie from Moto. If MSU would work that may make a bunch of these people life easier, not that it really should be seeing as they all keep doing things that everyone says can't/shouldn't be done. Peace

Yes, because in this process all PST is being used for is to just suspend the phone and get the P2K drivers loaded... MSU can be used instead of PST...

see item # 2a on the the HOW TO's page at http://mark.cdmaforums.com

This is very true, if only I had found this before I applied a skin to my Verizon UI V3c. I applied a skin called "Moto" using P2kcommander using instructions from MotoModders. The skin did not properly apply - every time I pressed "Menu", the screen would flash, and the phone would reset itself. I could access the contacts menu using the right soft key, but not the message menu with the left soft key. I could see who I was receiving texts from if a new one popped up, but I could not open it. I could make calls and receive calls, although instead of the normal screen during a call, it would be a white screen with blue text counting the length of the call. Also, in Mobile web, instead of the red bar at the bottom, it was a blue bar which was part of the skin.

I attempted to delete the files in P2kcommander, but I did so too quickly. Many of the skin's files still remained. Eventually, after a whirwind experience with test mode and not being able to get out of it, I was able to delete the rest of the files using BitPim. My phone now works normally (except for Airplane Mode, but I believe that is because of a different seem edit).

just a question. seeing that i am not interested in vcast or the verizon music player, or the tf slot, what other undesirable effects would the alltel flash have on my v3m? i just despise this gui.

See the guide to flashing to alltel..

You have work to do to get messging, web, get it now, etc.. working..

Plus you void your warranty, loose any/all support from Verizon, etc.. And of course, if something isn't working, you can't just "flash back" to the Verizon firmware, because there is no leaked V3M firmware, and the process for backing up the flash Doesn't work yet for CDMA phones... (i.e. backup from a "source" phone, converting into a proper file for flashing (.shx), then applying to "target phone" and having the target actually work...)

The above tutorial saved my phone ...thanks!

NO skins for my new RAZR V3m!!

you can skin a razr v3c from verizon if you do it right...

I have done this and can confirm that the below method works:
http://www.hacktherazr.com/guide.v3c.v3m.skin.html

You can't use GSM skins, but if you make a CDMA skin right, it will work perfectly.

Not that I want to take anything away from that process, or those who came up with it...

I said it in another thread... but I'll say it again here... to me, those are THEMES.. not skins... since your are not changing icon placement, and the look/feel like you can on the E815 or V3C (with non-verizon firmware)...

See -> http://www.howardforums.com/showpos...6&postcount=137

My V710 could not use SKINS, but supported Themes... When you switched THemes, it changed the background, and the colors of the title bars/menus and behind the soft menu keys... as well as the external LCD Images... However, icons, positions, placements, etc... remaind exactly the same... So everything was in the "same place", just different color and backgrounds...

On the E815, which supports SKINS but apparently not Themes... The skins can change icon positions, colors, back grounds, placements of time/date/banners, and even the icons themselves, creating an entirely new look/feel to the phone.

My big question is that is the skinning processes for an Altell V3c the same for a USCC Vc3?

Or are there different steps in the processes.

I have Skinner4Moto and had 2 sucesses and 1 flop. Loded a GSM skin most likely.

How do you tell the difference between the GSM skins and the CDMA skins?

And is there a way to convert the skins from GSM to CDMA?

I know somewhere in the V3m's software is the Motorola UI. It might be deep in there, but I know its there! I have been able to change the Sound Setting to the Moto UI format, thanks to Mark Venture, and did a theme change on my V3m.

Heres the theme I made for my v3m

And heres the Moto UI Sound settings format.

AgeNt B,
Can I get a copy of that Windows theme from you or did you download it from somewhere?

Posted by: Mazzel

seriously, hook me up with that theme and a little guide to put it into place on the phone???
