Hi I just got a T-Mobile 8801, I was curious to know if it's possible to unbrand it from the T-Mo things on it. Please let me know if it's possible. Would it be unbranded if the firmware was updated on it? I'm coming from the world of Motorola so please excuse me.

Yes, it is possible but unlike with Motorola, Nokia's firmware files aren't readily available. You have to have it done by a Nokia dealer or service center.

Seeing that you're from the SF Bay Area, you might want to see if there is a place somewhere in the City or even Chinatown that can do it for you. I haven't been back home to the Bay Area for a couple years so I don't know if you could also get this done somewhere in the East Bay or down in the San Jose area.

Good Luck,

First of all, unbranding a t-mobile 8801 is possible with correct service tools, such as JAF, Twister, and others. unbranding a nokia phone is just a process of loading different firmware/customization/language pack into the phone.

I am not sure how much you got your phone from t-mobile (550 with 2 years contract?). getting a unbranded 8801 from compusa without contract is only 50 dollars more+tax. Some dealerships in SF chinatown could possibly unbrand the phone for you. However, since most of the nokia phone (dct3/4 vs. bb5 using usb cable) require special cable to do the flashing, i think you better call them before you go in.

I got it used at a great amount under retail from any where. So it's not just a firmware update to unbrand it? On Motorola's that's what it takes a firmware update. have so much to learn about Nokia's still
