Why do you want 3G ?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: lamplighter

I posted this in 2 other forums, strictly out of curiosity. Posted in the SE forum so I may get some intelligent answers but also posted in the Motorola forum so I may get some answers written in crayon, but probably from those select few who are not complete morons.
I will also post it here, in friendly territory, as the title suggests;
Why do you want 3G ?
I know the majority of posters here are from N.A. and would like 3G but how do you think it will make your mobile experience better ?

Cheers LL-

being able to see their face is one but probably would not like the cost of the service. I say yes to it if it costs cheaper or maybe few extra dollars more to the plan. Also faster internet would be nice.

hahaha its funny cause its true

personally i think there are many reasons to want 3g. one major thing i think people forget about is battery life. most 3g capable phones use less power when connected to a UMTS network. and then theres the major things like faster data connections, video calls, tv, potentially better call quality etc.

honestly i rarely use my phone for anything but the occasional phone call or picture. but i wonder if i never use the data service because i dont need it, or because its too slow... i think the real question here is why wouldn't you want 3g?

I understand, why would you NOT want 3G is a good question but having 3G will not make things much better.
Nobody uses video calling, nobody watches streaming video and the internet is not much faster, if it is at all.
3G is completely over-rated and basically is a sham, you will get 3G and pay for it but you will not notice a difference from your current service.

i would argue the data thing. farking GPRS is slow... and i doubt we'd see much if any rate hike here in the US. people wouldnt stand for it. i think 3g will allow more features that you can pay for seperately rather than forcing basic rates to go up. besides, i'll be switching for prepaid soon (save lotsa $$)so it probably won't affect me at all

i wanna see live porno video calls.

3g internet speed is fine, especially if the page is formatted for small screens. I was using google happily on my 904sh when I was over there. Video calling is a cool novelty factor, but its too expensive to be used all the time at this stage.

As a rabid fan of W-CDMA, I think I will post my thoughts.

Why did I "embrace" the new (and not so reliable at first) service? I wanted to use something that was more advanced than GSM, and that is set to replace GSM sooner or later. I also, and probably the initial -deciding- factor I took out a contract, was because W-CDMA phones work in Japan. I was first inspired by the V801SA thread in the Sanyo forums (that was later moved into a mod-only forum and thus dissappeared from public sight). Normal GSM phones didn't work in Japan, and having the W-CDMA 2100MHz over the GSM 850MHz band on a phone meant more to me (I'm still a staunch supporter of 1900MHz) - although of course, quad band GSM + W-CDMA 2100MHz are becoming increasingly common. Later, SK Telecom and KTF joined the W-CDMA, adding a second country to the exclusive list where there is no GSM. Another bonus. I love saying "my phone works there, and yours doesn't haha." I'm the kind of person that is quick to jump on the bandwagon in the early stages to make it happen for others.

What do I use it for? Mainly videotelephony if anything. I don't really use it for data, but that's not saying I don't want to, carrier costs are prohibiting that more than anything.

Is it worth it? Definately. 3G is the next big thing, and I refuse to buy a GSM only phone. The only thing prohibiting me if anything are price plan costs/data usage costs etc. My plan is good for value, but if I coupled a data plan with it, it would simply be too expensive. This is more of a carrier issue really.

What are the drawbacks? Until recently, all the 3G phones we saw were big. Western consumers aren't used to big handsets, and thus this didn't settle well with users so 3G got off to a bumpy start in the west. One thing that I have noticed is that previously, dual mode GSM/W-CDMA handsets, had a longer battery life when using GSM, and a shorter one on W-CDMA, the reverse is starting to become the norm, where GSM uses more battery life than W-CDMA. Another drawback is the fact that W-CDMA coverage is still very much being rolled out in some countries, while some big cities have solid coverage pretty much everywhere, as soon as you hit the suburbs, the coverage is only adequate, sometimes not at all, although this is part of new technology being rolled out I guess, and I personally, don't mind this at all. I have decent coverage where I live in the UK. In Hong Kong, 3G coverage is decent in Kowloon and Hong Kong, but still patchy in the New Territories. 3G handsets also cost a lot, and whereas older GSM handsets are easy to find, old 3G handsets are not so easy, meaning you end up paying more. This has something partially to do with the high cost of a handset, but also has to do with the fact that people are not willing to adopt/take up on the new technology.

Would I recommend 3G? I would actually, because more people, means more customers, means better/faster rollout of services/coverage and also , indrectly, and in the long term, lowers costs (both for handsets as well as price plans etc.). Additionally, a 3G phone is a true MUST if you are a Japanophile, in my opinion.

my opinion.

if you have a pretty good data rates that you think is something affordable for you then i would recommend 3g technology. right now our network providers here just lowered down their data rates since they launched 3g. they made it that way so as to encourage customers to use the technology more. so, i believe, having 3g will trigger the drop of data rate price. and for those who complains that browsing on your phone is slow, 3g answers that concern.

Ok now my opinion.

I never use video calling, I've done it about three times total since getting my 903 eight months ago. But once you've used 3G data you generally don't want to go back to GPRS (or EDGE, which is quite slower than its theoretical download speed). It's reliant on your operator to provide good bandwidth across users (and good response time), but if you have those, 3G is bloody fast and good.

And actually, I DO use video streaming. When you have Vodafone Mobile TV streaming live TV channels, you tend to use it. Even if the quality is a bit crappy, it's just great to be able to watch live TV on your phone. In that area 3G is cool.

But in the area of battery life 3G sucks. GSM uses far less power than 3G, so if I didn't use the above then I'd lock my phone to GSM and go ahead with it that way, as it would use less power.

Also one unique reason is that while I'm in Japan, if I didn't have 3G I wouldn't be able to roam here. That helps. I should add, I successfully watched Australian live TV in Japan using 3G roaming (only for 20 seconds though, considering that at 1 cent/kilobyte watching TV costs about 15 Aussie cents per second).

wait!!!!!!!!!!!!

im not sure though but i think when you are in 3g network power consumption is lower. you may also want to check your manuals and look for the talk time. i noticed in the manual that talk time is longer when under 3g than under gsm. imo we think that 3g uses more power when in fact it is the other way around. its just because we use it more when we're under 3g. we go video streaming, video calling, and get carried away when browsing because of the killer speed, things we don't usually do when under gsm only. also another theory of mine why battery life gets shorter when under 3g is because of unstable 3g network which basically depends on your area. if you set your phone on "auto mode" it automatically switches to 3g when if it is available. but if 3g is poor it goes back to gsm. and constant switching might be the reason of strong power consumption.

disclaimer: again these are just my opinion.

I dont see any reason to use the 3G even tho I can...?
internet speed is still too slow to get some useful **** done.
video calling with like msn on a real computer with fast connection still sucks....i dont even wanna think of how the 3g vid will look like....

What could you be possible doing on your phone that requires that high of a data speed? I have EVDO coverage where I am and get about 624kb download and when I tether thru BT to my PPC I get about 300kb. This is plenty fast to get anything done on a mobile. If I plug in thru USB to a laptop I get full data rate speeds that have at some points reached 1.5mb!

I really want China to get a 3G network going, mainly because of what I se from other places like Japan. I WANT to be able to just carry my cell phone and have it do everything- I want to be able to comfortable browse the web on my phone- watch TV on the go and maybe record it for later viewing on the big screen with a TV-out cable- show my friends the sights while I'm on vacation LIVE with video calls. These are some of the possibilities I see with 3G that I really look forward to, and maybe there are more that I haven't thought of yet, but 3G has a lot of potential, it just needs the right pricing (if I have to pay more than 4x the normal rate for voice calls to make a video call, it'll never take off- if I have to pay more than 2x normal price to use the 3G data network, then that won't go over very well either).

Why don't you want 3G ?

Btw here in Europe Vodafone is already launching their 3G HSDPA network, Mobile Connect Card and even already a phone

http://www.3g.co.uk/PR/July2006/3305.htm

Ireland and Portugal are the first countries, Italy and Germany will follow soon and my source at Vodafone told me my beloved Holland will also follow later this year

well have you try it before lamp? or AL? I did try it out when I was in hong kong, on top of the regular minute they included 60 minute of video call in the 3g plan for about 200 hkd, and it is dirt cheap compare to our cell bill. if you have a good network provider then it is really worth it, becasue you can do alot of things through the 3 G network and the speed is alot faster. The video calling is cool because it will give you all the facial expression of the other party there is also the TV and bunch of other stuffs. of course if using it wrong it could be a 24/7 Surveillance camera or remote control for your gf!!! but after all it is one of the best tech out there and it will be the future (espcially for urban area)

Posted by: Timsta

video calling also allows your gf to check you if you are at a dup gwut cheung or not.... u need to bring a portable poster of the subway or something... for a backdrop before making a video call.
